Fang Island Major Sargent House Records [2012] Fire Note Says: Fang Island return with an even bigger sound on their sophomore outing Major . Album Review: Following up a critically hailed debut is never easy and I will tell you right up front that fun rockers Fang Island do not surpass their excellent 2010 self-titled release here but it definitely is not for a lack of [...]
For fans of Fang Island ’s debut album, Major has an awful lot to live up to. The record pioneered that original and infectious sound of theirs, often copied but never really bettered. Fang lsland is much loved by fans and critics alike, leaving many wondering if a follow up can live up to the hype. Fang Island are a band who don’t seem to take such pressure or themselves too seriously, listing a few reasons why they decided to call the album Major as “it’s a 'Valley girl' colloquialism” and [...]

Sometimes the build-up for a new album takes months and months, having you begging for any little crumb ages before the release date. Sometimes though, the buzz for an album seems to happen like a bolt of lightning. It's definitely been the latter for Major , the new album from Fang Island . Seemingly out of nowhere the record, out July 24th, has become one of the most talked-about releases of the summer. Not advanced doctorate is required to be able to confirm that Fang Island can turn out some catchy [...]
Fang Island Asunder MP3 by Fang Island . When they played here at office for me I was impressed. Here's a track from their newest album called Major . It's heavy and melodic when it counts with their sense of prog rock. Headache MP3 by METZ. As we exchanged tweets back and forth the other day with @Obits on the awesomeness of this band. We compared them to Janitor Joe & GvsB. They are dirty and probably will never make even close to what [...]

An enigmatic fist pump, a rapturous applause, a shiny star on the front of your homework, Major by Fang Island is a victory for not taking yourself too seriously and for remembering that the roots of adulthood maturity are buried in childhood innocence. It's also a reminder that the best songs are sometimes simply the ones that have the guitar playing as loud as possible. The success of this album is it's honesty. We are never over-promised anything by Fang Island, so when they over-deliver on several tracks, it's a delight. The opener, [...]

Eric here again (previous posts here and here ). I feel like more of my favorite bands have released, or are about to release, potentially awesome albums in the last few months than I have time for these days. I'm firmly entrenched in Japandroids ' Celebration Rock , knee-deep in Beach House's Bloom , starting to put in some solid QT with El-P's Cancer for Cure and Killer Mike's R.A.P. Music , and licking my lips just thinking about diving into Dirty Projectors' Swing Lo Magellan and Twin Shadow's [...]

D.L. Anderson A veritable deluge of new album information came across the desk in the last day or so, though it could well have been delivered in a box of animal crackers. First and least expectedly - at least I wasn't expecting one - is a new Mountain Goats album entitled Transcendental Youth due out on October 2. There's no sample track yet - not even one of those album trailers that are de rigeur these days - but instead and arguably better are a couple of essays about [...]

Stream: Fang Island- Major This new album from the Rhode Island-based group Fang Island could not have come at a better time of year. These psychedelic math rockers have a penchant for face melting guitars and anthemic, singalong choruses that evoke the summer months, and their new full length album Major brings both of these qualities in heavy doses. Although it keeps the fist-pumping energy and melodic euphoria of their past releases intact, Major finds the group branching out musically and exploring new territory as songwriters. Most notably, this record features [...]

As we head into the summer months, the festival season kicks in, which is great. However, the downside is that releases (especially decent ones) tend to get pushed back to September/October. Thankfully Fang Island are happy to take the summer by the scruff of its neck, and shake it until it's sore in all the right places. Have a listen to their new album, Major , a couple of week's ahead of its release courtesy of NPR. Remember, even if it's raining, it's still summer.

Fang Island's music is a visceral release: Songs build and swell from chorus-like instrumental explosions to contented dénouements before the rush of the next one begins. You can sift through the band's music for epiphanies, or turn your brain off and dance in the heat. Fang Island's new album, Major, comes out July 24. Read more »

We get our 3rd taste of the upcoming Fang Island record, Major , with the crashing “Seek It Out”. It’s another infectious, joyous anthem from the Rhode Island/Brooklyn boys. The guitars might seem a bit mean-spirited, but Jason Bartell’s constant light and uplifting vocals make the possible odd combination work to perfection. I’m personally enjoying this new direction to feature much more vocals in the songs. Adds a bit more of texture in my opinion. Major comes out July 24th on Sargent House, and I fully look forward to [...]

Fang Island is the peanut-butter-burger of the rock world; taking the best of two sounds and mashing them together into one delicious, distorted, ear-explosion. The opening seconds from their latest song, "Seek It Out," are heavy, distorted and harsh. It's a great grungy rock-riff, that immediately captures your attention. The vocals however, are light, airy, and have a hint of that innocent-indie vibe to them, and serves as the perfect antithesis to its heavy surroundings. Munch like the aforementioned peanut-bu tter-burger, it's all about complementing each other in an unexpected way. The marrying of two unlikely elements that not only [...]

Fang Island have an album coming out soon, and "Seek It Out," is their third peek inside Major . These guys are all energy and catchy hooks, and "Seek It Out," is the best of the three singles released so far. Major comes out on July 24th. Head over to their label's Sound Cloud page to hear more.

Jason Frank Rothenberg It's a matter of public record - or at the very least Google index - that I was no fan of Dirty Projectors' last record Bitte Orca , even though objectively speaking it was obviously one of the albums of 2009. However, one of the nice things about a band as obviously talented - no way am I arguing that point - and creatively restless as they is that each new album is akin to a blank slate. So yeah, I'm giving their [...]
