Frank Yang I've previously bemoaned the dearth of festivals in my area this Summer, but on Thursday night at Toronto's Molson Amphitheatre, if you squinted just right, it certainly looked like a festival. Sure, it was only four bands deep but it certainly had many of the necessary bases covered - buzzy young up-and-coming act? Check ( Fang Island ). Hometown representation? Check ( Tokyo Police Club ). Critically acclaimed, indie cred-toting vets? Check ( Spoon ). Mind-bending, world-class headliner? Check and check ( The Flaming Lips ). [...]

Words and photography by Loren Wohl East River State Park Joy Division covered Chuck Schumer, what up?

Perfect weather, tons of rad kids and a massively major lineup set the stage for the summer's first Pool Party on the Williamsburg Waterfront. While the warm weather season began with queried "will they or won't they" whispers circulating, the season's festivities were announced a few days prior to the initial shindig. First up, was the collection of Pictureplane , Why? , [...]

Amanda M. Hatfield captured some glorious shots from yesterday's gig (in which Xiu Xiu & Deerhoof collectively covered Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures). So I didn't make out to any shows the first 10 days of July (including missing Real Estate TWICE and Beach Fossils yet again), and I'm looking to changing that. I've already missed The Roots and Talib Kweli show I was planning on going to, so I'm off to a bad start. Probably the show I want to go to the most over these next 10 days is the Small Black and Beach Fossils show (7/14), which is 21+ so I'm gonna let out a huge FUUUUCK to that shit. (Maybe one of those bands wants to guest list me??? [...]

Image courtesy of Jeff Denberg I'm officially bogarting this review. You heard me right, I'm bogarting this review, which is something I have never ever done in my life before. You're witnessing history here, folks. I'm clamoring to write about something that does not specifically benefit my self-interested bludgeoning. I'm bogarting something that is not a beer or a j. Wait. Scratch that. Seeing as last night's Flaming Lips show completely blew away anything I could have previously imagined in terms of concert theatrics, showmanship, and the lustre of [...]

I don't think I need to say much about Sargent House guitar demons and ATG favorites Fang Island. The dudes tore up this year's SXSW and since then everyone and their mother has been raving about them. The band just released a video for "Careful Crossers," another song from the prog-pop-rock masterpiece that is their self-titled album. Not quite sure what's going on in this claustrophobic strobe and silly string orgy, but I want in on it. Check out the video after the jump. MP3: Fang Island - "Careful Crossers" [...]

Before I change my mind again, here are my picks for the best ten albums of the year so far: Top 10: 10: Wolf Parade - Expo 86 It's no secret that I love Wolf Parade. Their debut was one of my absolute favorite albums of the past decade and their sophomore effort I found to be nearly as enjoyable. Their third record, Expo [...]
Music video for "Careful Crossers" by Fang Island from the band's 2010 self-titled debut.

I know nothing about Fang Island . I don't think I want to. This eponymous album, which I'm told is their second, tells me everything I need, and that ain't much. The front cover is a faded photo of what appears to be a fairy battling a robot-castle, while the names of tracks are hidden - barely visible on the CD itself - with the names of the band members themselves left anonymous. There's no cult of personality about Fang Island because there doesn't have to be - this record is a straight-up riot. It [...]
3VOOR12:n kuuntelupisteeseen on kertynyt jälleen uutta kuunneltavaa. Fang Island: Fang Island Fang Islandin jo helmikuussa julkaistu debyyttilevy. Progressiivisempaa indierokkia. Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Like so many notable bands before them, Fang Island began as an art school project. More specifically, the band formed at the Rhode Island School of Design -- the same institution that provided a breeding ground for the Talking Heads (and Les Savy Fav and, to some extent, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs , and so on and so forth). But this weekend Fang Island will graduate with honors, in a manner of speaking, when they [...]
