Words by Robin Stewart I was in a record store one day when I chanced upon a compilation album presented by Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead fame. You may be familiar with his work; has the odd tinkle on the guitar, every now and again impresses with his prowess on this or that electronic box of tricks. Good bloke. Very thorough. What caught my eye though wasn't Radiohead's finest, but the red, gold and green on the cover. Greenwood's ingenuity has many influences I'm sure, but his [...]

It's December. It's Christmas. So for this week's Midweek Bootleg we're getting all festive with curious cover c/o Far and a couple of their pals from Deftones and Will Haven . Yeah, we're those annoying pricks who get really, really, REALLY into Christmas. We're the pricks who insist on organising the office Secret Santa. We're the ones drinking nothing but eggnog and mulled wine for the next five weeks. We're the ones posting weird Christmas cover songs in our (mostly) weekly Midweek Bootleg feature. [...]

“Today we’re younger than we’re ever going to be,” a line from the opening track of What We Saw From the Cheap Seats , quickly sums up what Regina Spektor is all about. Sure, on the surface it’s a playful declaration of carpe diem exuberance. But it’s also a precious reminder that this is as good as it gets, that everything is slipping away. It’s this wistfulness that has often been missed over the course of Spektor’s six albums, and that’s a shame because she’s actually a gritty songwriter. [...]
"If you type 33 in Wingdings it looks like the Twin Towers, OMG CONSPIRACY!" 1997 again, seriously? Yes, seriously. Piss off. I actually completely missed Far first time round, it wasn't until You Already Know covered Bury White on am EP for Record Store Day a few years ago that I heard the song. Heard it, liked it, went and bought some Far records, liked them too. Then Far released At Night We Live, their first album in 12 years, I looked forward to it [...]

When Regina first toured Oz after her LP, Begin to Hope , she gathered some very dedicated fans. We saw this when after months of silence following Begin To Hope where she performed at a benefit concert. There, in NY City's Bowery Ballroom, we stayed after to see if we could meet her. We hung out in the cold February NY winter chill. There, as if they were all invited personally from Regina, were a representative from each city that Regina had visited on her tour down under. We chatted with the Aussie's as we were 50% Aussie, my [...]

BF2D

So che era tanto tempo fa. Jonah [...]
The history of Jonah Matranga (Far) and fellow Sacramentoers (Sacramentans?) Deftones are inextricably linked. If you're not hip to Far, I highly recommend a visit to YouTube with a couple of beers at the ready, or, for the cool kids amongst you, jam the entirety of their incredible 1996 album Tin Cans With Strings To [...]

It’s been 3 years since Regina Spektor ’s remarkably more poppy effort, Far . 3 years; that’s a lot of time for me to loose interest in the New York native. The first track to be released from her new record, What We Saw From The Cheap Seats , is a sharp powerhouse of a single and more than enough to peak my interest again. Piano based as always, it lacks that much needed quirk of early Spektor , but with song-writing this good is it [...]
Radiohead and Portishead define this musichead's high school experience. The Owl Mag photographer, Wolfgangg Sauer, takes us on a trip.
Perhaps inspired by last week's stream of Deftones frontman Chino Moreno's collaboration with Circa Survive's Anthony Green, last week I finally got around to listening to the debut EP by another of Moreno's projects, ††† ("Crosses"), his electronic collaboration with Far's Shaun Lopez. I found the EP not just listenable but really, really good - after [...]
Japanese anime shows, Black Lagoon and Cowboy Bebop inspired visuals made this one of the more unique works of the year. Jhene Aiko - Snapped Synchronized roller skate-dancing visuals at Venice Beach made this groovy tune worth noting. Princeton - To the Alps Director - Sean Barret Marina Diamindis went all EDM (Electronic Dance Music) on us and gave us some [...]

Far (feat. Chino Moreno) : Feed the World (Do They Know It‘s Christmas Time?) [ purchase ] Though significantly less grandiose than the execution and process of the original, charity is still charity, no matter how brief a studio session may accompany it. The early aughts saw an explosion of trans-genre and cover albums in the worlds of punk, metal, alternative, emo, and pop, and one recurring instance of that was the holiday album. In 2003, Immortal records released A Santa Cause: It’s a Punk Rock Christmas , on which [...]

"What gives this mess some grace unless it's kicks, man? Unless it's fiction? Unless it's sweat or it's songs?" - Lyrics from the song 'Unless It Kicks' by Okkervil River I'm a total sucker for lyrics. Of course I love the music too - a stunning guitar solo, the kick of a bass drum, some otherworldly vocals - but there is something about the words themselves that really hits me. I guess it comes down to the fact that I can pick up my guitar and [...]
