In sweeping generalization, music appreciators break down into two commonly recognized groups: Album People and Song People. I am unabashedly a Song Person, hence my ritualized fascination with the mix CD. Within my clan, there is another important distinction - Repeator or Non-Repeator. I admit to being the former. We Repeators are little roving needles in [Read Full Post...]

Officially the lowest-intensity song to ever make it into a remix roundup, "Gay Boy" by Italians Do it Better darling Farah, is barely a song at all. Unembellished - even slightly nasal - vocals tiptoe over a stripped down floor, no more than a few heartbeats of percussion and a few telltale Johnny Jewel ominous [Read Full Post...]

Italians Do It Better label hits again our gas station. This time with the strangest record they have ever released. We talking about Farah's new 'Gay Boy' single, where she attempts to turn her gay mate straight. Label founder Mike Simonetti describe it on his blog as "LL Cool J's 'I Need Love' and the Shangri-Las' 'Leader of the Pack' through the eyes of a Valley Girl on Lithium". This is a cult classic for sure! "Gay boy gay boy, won't you change your mind..." [...]

What a week of death it has been. First Ed McMahon, then Farrah Fawcett. She had a long battle with anal cancer. Now, Charlie's Angels will never be the same and that haircut will always bring back memories. I remember her cameo, for a couple of episodes, on Spin City . She looked like she was about to revive her career. Here's more on her struggle: "Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, [ 30 ] and began treatment, including chemotherapy and surgery. Chris from Good Records e-mailed me about their 9th Birthday Party, taking place April 18. Find the official flyer online here , and he had this to say in his e-mail: Saturday April 18, 2009-Revolution 9 & Record Store Day-10am to 2am Good Records is celebrating its ninth birthday to coincide with the 2nd Annual Record Store Day. There will be two stages filled with pleasant sounds. There will be sustenance and libations to satisfy your hunger and quench your thirst respectively. Italo Disco has made a bit of a comeback in the six months, with Glass Candy, Invisible Conga People, Mirage...well the whole Italians Do It Better roster basically. Which is no bad thing, I've long been a fan of 'space disco' (as it used to be called). But what most people seem to forget is that most Italo disco was shit: 'Italo disco', as a term, originated from Germany and this bloke in particular, not Italy. As cool as it is now, people also don't realise [...]

I'm just waiting for someone to start a night dedicated to emo club pretty much just so I can go bounce to glass candy and co without needing a reason to be sad + dropping Farah would be eerily amazing. I <3 Farah . So to all you club promoters! / / Oh and maybe start an Italo disco night too purely so Mike can be the resident king and then claim my Pizza addiction as a tax write off. Farah - Law of Life

O Level - "We Love Malcolm" O Level preceded the sadly still semi-unsung Television Personalities as teenaged Dan Treacy's songwriting vehicle of choice. The sharp minded among you will recognize that name from TVP's immortal "Part Time Punks," as the name of the band whose single is purchased at the Rough Trade shop by the trend hopping Londoners of the title's derision (a nice self deprecating touch, that). "We Love Malcolm" was a response of sorts to TVP's Rough Trade Records single, the truly truly awesome, "Where's Bill Grundy Now?" That classic was [...]
Though I haven't heard much of anything about them since 2005, the Kills were playing near constant New York City gigs in support of 2003's Keep on Your Mean Side and its preceding EP, Black Rooster . I managed to catch two or three excellent sets during that span. Strung out sexpot VV was doomed and striking, lighting cigarette after cigarette in the newly smoke free club scene. Her ludicrously named partner "Hotel' a bolt of spastic frustrated energy. They had the same minimal boy/girl cool that makes Prinzhorn Dance School so appealing now, only channeled [...]

Pictures courtesy of Last Nights Party. I stumbled across a song by Farah Holly and couldn't find anymore of it anywhere. I found her myspace page that has some songs on it. Im digging it, it sounds kind of like Yaz / early Eurythmics with a good serving of gothic Italo disco, new wave goodness and a dash of Jim Morrison for good measure. Am I sounding like a wank? Farah Holly - You're The One [...]

Jersey City based imprint Italians Do It Better are primed to have a big year. Mike Simonetti , DJ and founder of Troubleman Unlimited started the new label which (as of now) focuses mainly on bands with an italo disco sound. I wanted to feature some tracks from the label's roster, from the vocoder heavy Italian duo of Mirage to the subdued horns of Glass Candy 's "Rolling Down The Hills" to Farah 's [...]

Und noch: auch die Landschaften nicht vergessen - I'm impressed. glass candy Thanks to our friend Sara (not our real friend, just our myspace friend) for inadvertently introducing us to Glass Candy . We don't know much about the duo, aside from the fact that they do an amazing cover of "Iko" ( mp3 ). But we do know that they worked on the new Chromatics record in some capacity, so if you liked that "In The City" song we posted the other day (of course you did) then I think it's safe to say you'll like this.
