Engine Room Records has released the third volume in their series of indie bands covering guilty pleasure tunes, and this time they're all taking on hair metal classics. How does it fare? Very, very well.
In the midst of a fairly calamitous week - lost wallet, lost replacement bank card, lost girlfriend.. - my laptop opted to die recently. The absence of a bank card and indeed cash in general meant it's taken me a goodly while to recover my bloggish pretensions. But here we are, all ready to go [...]

What a week of death it has been. First Ed McMahon, then Farrah Fawcett. She had a long battle with anal cancer. Now, Charlie's Angels will never be the same and that haircut will always bring back memories. I remember her cameo, for a couple of episodes, on Spin City . She looked like she was about to revive her career. Here's more on her struggle: "Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, [ 30 ] and began treatment, including chemotherapy and surgery. Ahhh. Another week, another hour long PSA of what a bad father can do to a daughter. Now I gotta be honest, for some reason my cable box decided not to record Rock of Love this week and by the time I noticed we'd missed the first 8 minutes or so. When we turned it on, Bret was in a hockey rink and the girls were just entering. Turns out that this week's challenge is a slight variation of last season's "save Brett's baby, rollerderby challenge". See, Brett needs a woman who'll be able to take care of and be [...]
First, before I delve in further, just a disclaimer: I am not claiming these songs were posted NEW over the summer...some of them I just found for the first time over the summer, and for all I know they have been up online since one Christmas past. So it may show my cunning to find cool stuff online, or show that I am slow to the draw and some other bloggers beat me to the punch. First off, some tracks I am fairly certain were new this past summer, and these were posted online on [...]
Gal and Lad "Going to Maine" (Mountain Goats cover) A random Google search while cover hunting led me to the MySpace page of the delightful Gal and Lad , where you can download this track along with a few of their popdorable originals. Farrah "It's Different for Girls" (Joe Jackson cover) The dreamy lead singer for Farrah, a UK power pop band, sounds about 15 years old. And I'm okay with that. Bettye LaVette "I Do Not [...]

I might listen to too much new music. Way more than I should. The process of sorting out the good from the bad can sometimes be tiresome as most of the time, what I hear doesn't sound like what they're sold. But every now and then, something rewarding comes along the way and reminds me of the reason why I'm in this in the first place. One of those cases is Farrah. Farrah have no desire of breaking any new grounds. They waste no time trying to be experimental, instead they're very good at [...]
