"I remember everything ... I remember everything ..." This past Saturday, the Bottom of the Hill club in San Francisco capped off a week of 20th anniversary celebrations with a lineup that could've been beamed in from 1995: Fastbacks , Muffs (Facebook group), and Uncle Joe's Big Ol' Driver . Don't misunderstand me, I wasn't there. I was at La Zona Rosa in Austin having my face melted off by Wild Flag . But, for those of us who were paying attention in [...]
Watch videos of every song on Nirvana's 'Nevermind' played in Seattle last night.

Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has announced plans to perform the band's hit album, ' Nevermind ' in is entirety to celebrate the record's 20th anniversary. Novoselic will perform the album on September 20 at the Experience Music Project's Sky Church venue in Seattle. Joining the bassist on the bill, and performing one track off the album, will be Fastbacks , Vaporland , the Long Winters , Visqueen , Campfire OK , Valis , and Ravenna Woods . Tickets to [...]

The light's on you - Fastbacks There's a moment in this song around two and a half minutes in when it comes to the line " and keep it all safe inside " that might be the Fastbacks' most glorious moment. It takes it from a three minute song to a four minute one, and for once that's not a band thing. " Insiii-iii-iiide ." Kim and Lulu's voices in their concert, descending with each drawn out syllable. It happens four times over four [...]
Whether by coincidence, folly or serendipity this weekend brought two classic acts to Seattle. Both west coast micro phenomenons from way back, one wonders would they get any attention given today's clogged internet arteries of bands. Like elephants, old people never forget, and they tell the youngsters about how the music from back in the day was so much better. Some of the youngster must actually listen to their elders, or maybe they just find out for themselves? It had been ten years since Seattle's very own Fastbacks called it a day. [...]
In the Winter - Fastbacks Our Winters are pathetic. Although i live in one of the colder parts of this country, it's nothing to hole up away from. Complaining about the cold seems such an affront to those who live long, dark months trapped inside with snow-covered streets, frozen lakes, bare trees bending under the weight of ice - real Winters. Winters that necessitate infrastructure to deal with: Snowplows, salt, antifreeze, tire-chains, furnaces, long johns, the warmest of coats. Our stupid house doesn't even [...]
Slack Fest isn't the only local music festival happening this weekend. If you're not heading North to Stanwood, or even if you are, you can still catch some of Seattle's best bands this weekend in two uniquely Northwest festival settings ... and thanks the annual West Seattle Summer Fest and the Ballard Seafood Fest, [...]
Released in 1967, the Ray Davies penned 'Waterloo Sunset' is one of Britian's most revered songs. The Kinks version sets the bar high, but these five covers are all worth checking out.

Longtime HT faves the Felice Brothers have announced the details for the first round of 2011 tour dates. The upstate New York-based act will kick things off with a high profile appearance at SXSW on March 19, where they will play a showcase gig at the Auditorium Shores, that will feature Bright Eyes, Man Man and Middle Brother. The band will then head out for a cross-country headlining run, which will include their debut performance at Coachella, as well as their first-ever tour down under with dates scheduled in New Zealand and Australia. [...]

Seven days - Fastbacks Again with the Fastbacks? Their first album, on which this is the first song (and yesterday's the second), might be one of my favourites of all time. It is just everything i want, done at levels so perfectly and wonderfully excessive. Even towards the end, where the songs go places unsought and unexpected from the album's beginnings, it's still something great. And not only this first album. Everything. And again with Kurt Bloch! Pop punk with [...]

The light's on you - Fastbacks In a more just world it would have been this Kurt who set the guitar world afire in what surely was a hard pill of retardation for the old guard to have a hand seize their noses and mouths, forcing them to swallow. It would have been this Kurt who made a million kids pick up the instrument. Listen to the Fastbacks and not be convinced playing in a band with your friends is not only the one [...]
Klicken für mp3: Unnatural Helpers / I don't belong to you Share on Facebook

In the Summer - The Fastbacks When the documentary Hype came out, it was sold on it's coverage and rare footage of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and their ilk. It was because of that i went to see it. It was because of that i'm sure most went to see it. I went for the first recorded footage of Smells Like Teen Spirit or some other significance, i left with Some Velvet Sidewalk, Seaweed, Young Fresh Fellows, The Gits, Flop, and [...]

One of the good things about living in Los Angeles is that occasionally a band like Dinosaur Jr. will play a free show. "Wait, free??? Are you sure it's not the cover band, Dinosaur Jr. Jr.?" This was my first time seeing the Dinos since June 14, 1991 at the Hollywood Palladium ... with Nirvana opening. Woot! FYI, I attended that gig on crutches, having had my right knee scoped two days prior. 1991: the year both punk and I broke. Tuesday night's gig at [...]
It is general consensus that grunge has been dead for some time now; the advent of so-called "post grunge" being the primary evidence, alongside Chris Cornell's collaboration with Timbaland and the oft-noted deaths of Kurt Cobain and - for all of those old school purists - Andrew Wood. All things considered, the scene that was spawned from something of an anti-scene in the '80s is about as dead as some claim punk has been since post '94. The fans of grunge still hearken back, even as they age and opt to put trash in the can instead of kicking it. [...]
For many years now Scott McCaughey has been making a living as one of the auxiliary members of R.E.M., and as the leader of his one-time side project The Minus Five. But before either of these endeavors came into the picture, McCaughey was the ringleader of one of Seattle's best kept secrets, the Young Fresh Fellows. The band has just released I Think This Is , its first record in eight years.
I've barely had time to catch my breath over the past two weeks, and it's not slowing up any time soon. John Wesley Harding, the Fastbacks (!!), the Roots, Los Campesinos!, and Clem Snide.. And it's only the fourteenth! read more

Here's an homage to a group of Seattle-ites that got me thru my teen angst years. Short story.... On January 8th, 1995 I set my tape recorder up to record the very first Self Pollution Radio broadcast by Pearl Jam. They were going live on the air, and were gonna play some tunes and do some DJ stuff, and basically play by there own rules for a couple of hours and for the next couple of months, I listen to those tapes every night. The Fastbacks were my main focus from those tapes. What I heard [...]
When people think of Seattle music in the early 90's, names such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, and Alice In Chains immediately spring to mind. But lurking underneath the grunge exterior was a much more interesting and diverse collection of bands, many of whom had been rocking the Seattle circuit for years.
"I don't know this stuff. My sphere of knowledge? $5 footlongs at Subway. That's the stuff I know. Where to get cheap gas." -- The streetsmart Tom Scharpling, explaining his inability to translate the Brit-tish name of Graham Day's backing band "We're caught in a trap/We can't get out/Because I liiiiike you too much, baby." -- Tom, singing about his dysfunctional relationship with the rut-plagued Spike "Why, Mike's a drug addict, too?" -- Petey, wondering why Tom wants to stage a joint intervention "You know what, [...]
