![Dirty Beaches, Xiu Xiu & Father Murphy @ Mavericks [May 11, 2012]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4261169_lg.jpg)
It was one of those shows that I had to attend on May 11, 2012. More like a "Asians Representing/Asian solidarity" kind of show. It was hard at first asking people that I know if they were going to this show with other events happening the same night. All in all I kind of met some new people or that recognize me on through social media. Playing at the show were: • Dirty Beaches • Xiu Xiu [...]

"It's not all madness and desolation in Father Murphyland." runs the press release, "The last two tracks are the band's most hopeful moments" . This may well be the case, but both are still wrought with desolation; 'In The Flood, With The Flood' groans like a contorted, Satanist church service as reimagined in HP Lovecraft's worst nightmare; 'Don't Let Yourself Be Hurt This Time' pounds sluggishly through a series of industrial clangs with what sounds like a macabre pagan ritual being performed in the background. The only people likely to describe these as "hopeful moments" would [...]

Velvet Underground covers and reinterpretations are never exactly thin on the ground, but if nothing else, the ever-increasing range of re-workings serves to highlight the infinitely versatile and universal quality of Lou Reed's early compositions. This track by Treviso, Italy's Father Murphy , is "somehow inspired by The Velvet Underground's Jesus" and far removed as possible from Glen Campbell's 2008 version , whilst still being recognisably based on the same song. The band specialises in tension and awe, and these are the elements they bring to the fore here. A cobwebbed, sepulchral atmosphere is created ,with droning organ and harmonium, narcoleptic [...]

Prenez votre respiration. Prononcez maintenant HOW MUCH WOOD WOULD A WOODCHUCK CHUCK IF A WOODCHUCK COULD CHUCK WOOD?
![Father Murphy: No Room For The Weak [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3102535_lg.jpg)
A while back, someone sent me a little four-song EP by Father Murphy called No Room For The Weak . Father Murphy's style of post-rock is hypnotic and orchestral, and it borders on folk much like that of Thee Silver Mt. Zion. But it's more abrasive with hints of outlandishness; it's eerie and near psychotic at times. That's why it's been sitting dormant for a month or two - I needed to get in the right frame of mind to play it. On [...]
It's not going to be easy for you from here on out unless you learn to adapt to the world around you. That's what a voice in my head keeps telling me, in my sleep (Oh, did you think I was directing the above statement at you? Lord, what you must think of me!). Thoughts? [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News By Saturday night it wasn't really a secret anymore, but the secret Deerhoof performance at the Little Burgundy Loft at Espace Reunion for Pop Montreal saw a gradually filling venue that was never fully packed. The San Francisco quartet took to the stage at their non-secretive 2AM time slot, playing to the late partygoers celebrating the second-to-last night of the festivities. Lead singer Satomi Matsuzaki may [...]

![Father Murphy: So Now You Have To Choose Between My Two (Black) Lungs [Video]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1875119_lg.jpg)
Showtime's Dexter gives us an interesting foray into one serial killer's mind. It's something you'd expect from a station like Showtime, whose original series lineup is pretty impressive to begin. But it's not something you'd necessarily expect in a music video. Watching "So Now You Have To Choose Between My Two (Black) Lungs" by Father Murphy , I cannot help but picture the destructive figure as a madman in the making. Father Murphy is a band from Torino, Italy and their dark music is often reminiscent of [...]

I feel old; creaky. Boy, do I ever feel the passage of time wearing away at my joints, eroding what little whiteboy athleticism I have and causing a game of fly-up football to break my spirit. Then again, the older I get the more secure I feel with just about everything. Things are more balanced and orderly, that kind of thing. Not only that but my age has allowed me to enjoy a lot of good TV shows I would have otherwise missed out on, like Wonder Years, Small Wonders and so, so many more. [...]
