(Sevens, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.) I'm not sure who you trust, but I hope it's not a musician. Chalk Robert Pollard's Guided By Voices up as the latest group to renege on their promise not to reunite, not to tour, and not to record [...]
After a fifteen year hiatus, the "classic line up" of Guided By Voices finished off its year-long reunion tour by recording an album of 21 new songs, making a deliberate effort to return to what bandleader Robert Pollard calls the "semi-collegial" approach of iconic GBV albums like Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes. Let's Go Eat [...]

Let's Go Eat the Factory é o primeiro lançamento do grupo desde 2004, e considerando que se trata de fruto da formação clássica, é o primeiro disco desde Under The Bushes, Under The Stars, de 1996. Dessa forma, The Unsinkable Fats Domino, a primeira música liberada de uma bandas mais importantes do rock alternativo em muito tempo, é fruto de [...]

In the immortal words of Shang Tsung: It has begun. The first single from the upcoming Guided By Voices record Let's Go Eat the Factory will be released Nov. 22. The Unsinkable Fats Domino will be backed with We Won't Apologize for a seven-inch single that can be pre-ordered from Matador as we speak. Bob Pollard was also kind enough to make The Unsinkable Fats Domino available online. While I've only heard this track, I'm feeling good about the album, which is [...]
Lost in the news that the reformed Guided by Voices (Robert Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Mitch Mitchell, Kevin Fennel, and Greg Demos) would be releasing an album of new material on January 1st, was the announcement of an additional album of new material to follow in May 2012. The first album, Let's Go Eat the Factory, was recorded in the style of classic GBV albums Propeller, Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes and Under the Bushes, Under the Stars, in various garages and impromptu studios across the country. The second, meanwhile, will find the reunited band amping up and cleaning up that sound [...]

Let's recap: Last October, Robert Pollard reconvened Guided By Voices' "classic" lineup for Matador's rather epic 21st birthday gala in Vegas . The ensuing year has seen a premium placed on Cuervo and fistpumps, with GBV offering their rousing, rambling indie rock pith in 120-second bursts on tour ever since. Then came the announcement of Let's Go Eat The Factory , the classic lineup's first LP since 1996′s Under The Bushes, Under The Stars , due New Year's Day. Today you can hear its first single, "The Unsinkable Fats Domino." It's wrapped under [...]

Photo by Heather Kaplan As previously reported , Guided by Voices will release their reunion record, Let's Go Eat the Factory , on January 1st. Given that it's the first effort with the group's "classic lineup" since 1996, it's a pretty big deal. Now, thanks to frontman Robert Pollard's website (via P4K ), we have our first taste with "The Unsinkable Fats Domino". Over a crunchy, wavy rhythm section, Pollard yelps, "The water is undrinkable except for the unsinkable Fats Domino," sounding slightly like a more melodic J Mascis. [...]
Straight out of New Orleans and armed with a boogie-woogie style and smooth voice Fats sold more records than any other black rock n roll star of the 19502s.
On the morning of June 13th , I received a call from my 75 year old dad saying he thought he was having a stroke. After I hung up and proceeded to call 911 (since he didn't), the paramedics came, rushed him to the hospital and sure enough, he unbeknownst to us, had suffered from his 3rd stroke. The good news is, he has no lasting effects from any of the strokes, however, his heart is not functioning to its full capacity and further treatment will be necessary. During his recovery, I spent the first 2 [...]
Pat Boone might have taken it to number one but this song will always belong to Fats Domino to me.

Following on from the post about rock & roll in A History of Country Vol. 8, here are three originals of rock & roll classics. Incidentally, I might have used in the past images from www.originalsproject.us , which I would have sourced elsewhere. Indeed, the image that accompanies the original for Blueberry Hill, which I found on another site, is from that brilliant site. * * * Swing And Sway With Sammy Kaye - Blueberry Hill (1940).mp3 Glenn Miller and his Orchestra [...]
