Hey, apparently there's a cure for GRID HIV now ! The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a brilliant doctor from Germany performed a bone marrow transplant on an HIV patient using marrow from a naturally immune donor. Since white blood cells are derived from bone marrow, the HIV-resistent bone marrow produced HIV-resistent WBCs with the CCR5 mutation that prevents HIV from binding to white blood cells, and all traces of the virus disappeared from the patient's bloodstream. Since the transplant, doctors have not detected any signs of the virus for 600 days. [...]
Hey, in case you haven't noticed, my website broke. I don't even know if anyone will be able to read this, but have no fear, I'm trying to fix things. And by that I mean I'm crying and jerking off and submitting questions to support forums across the Internet, and waiting for some kind soul to help me. The page might be fixed at any moment, or it might never be fixed. Who the fuck knows, really? By the way, if anybody reading this knows anything about WordPress, Blogger, 1and1, and subdomains, now would be a really good [...]

My journey deeper into krautrock continues, after recent purchases by Neu! and Amon D????l II , with the first two Faust albums. I've had them for a few weeks now and have been listening to both pretty religiously; in fact, I'd say these are my favorite kraut acquisitions of the year by far???not as cold as Neu!, not as aimless as ADII. For the longest time I was put off by Faust, mostly because of their album covers and their band name, both of which radiate a kind of proto-goth/industrial vibe. Once again I was guilty [...]

The Faust Tapes is a famous album, sadly for all of the wrong reasons. It became famous because when it was released in 1973, it was sold for the price of a single. This surely prompted a lot of people to buy it, not really knowing what they were getting into. Sadly, Faust aren't for everyone. It's also famous for not having a track listing; on the original lp there aren't even any track breaks in the grooves. John Peel once collaborated with the band in a hoax where he read out a fake [...]

There was quite an interesting debate in one of the darken spaces that thee 20jazzfunkgreats roam regarding the extent to which the trend towards tunes of 10 minutes or longer which has become growingly common in certain genres you know we dig, such as kosmische disco, is a good or ...

Sunday. Is it time again already for a new mix tape? Ugh, alright. Hold on, let me get my glasses. [2 minute pause] Ah, much better. Before we get started, I figured I would reprint for you the mini top five (it's actually a top six, but who's counting!) that a lovely Swanfungus reader e-mailed me this weekend. I recently posed a rhetorical question on the topic of women, but since I actually received a legitimate response from one of you, I will reprint it for your reading pleasure. Here are the top five reasons girls like to [...]

Why am I so, so tired? As I write this I have just awoken from a mini-slumber. Earlier tonight I tried watching The Polar Express with Nicci to officially usher in the Christmas season, but unfortunately I could not keep my eyes open, and missed the majority of the animated holiday magic. Not only that, I decided to venture up to the garage with Ilya and others for a brief session, completely shirking my mix tape duties, so this has all been thrown together with alarming speed. Hopefully it doesn't totally suck, you'll understand my somnolence, and give [...]

Krautrock is one of those genres that had monumental impact on modern music without ever really becoming well-known to the mainstream. The term itself is used to refer to a collective of German bands in the early 70's who pushed the boundaries between music & noise, rhythm & art. Really, it can be seen as a subgenre of progressive rock - but without all the cheese that accompanies typical prog-rock or the lame "we're going to use synths 'cuz we can use synths" philosophies. We are talking about music that is, in most regards, [...]

Last night I enlisted Steve and Ilya to drive south to San Clemente to visit one of the Pizza Port brew pubs. It was about what I expected: above average food and really tasty beers. After ordering food and drinks we sat outside at a long, narrow picnic table, shoveling our faces until it was time for another round of beers. When we were full, we decided to talk a walk down to the San Clemente Municipal Pier and its surrounding beach. We sat watching the tide before deciding to walk to the end of the pier. I [...]
Lord Nuneaton Savage is back from his lair, and he's got some...erm, SPEED. When he characterises his writing as 'infantile', the adjective rises to Nietzschean dimensions (in a good way). Anyway,... I can't remember exactly what I was listening to in the late 1990s when the Krautrock revival apparently happened but a fair guess would be the seemingly endless supply of funk compilations that got released around that time. Wow, gawd bless the internet for serving up recordings of legendary Kraut pioneers Faust that I'm sure many of us hadn't heard before (or knew existed). Turns out that after the band recorded their album IV for Virgin and had a somewhat chaotic tour, Richard Branson had his fill of their shenanigans and cut them loose once again in 1975. Although, at this point the band had gone ahead and run up some expensive hotel and studio bills at Giorgio Morodor's Araballe studios, as depicted by member Jean-Herve Peron: I have [...]
