One last list of the best music of 2012 for you, this, our first proper day of 2013. Just like in 2011 , 2010 , and 2009 , we've tallied up your votes for the past year and assembled the best of 2012 Reader List. To qualify, each album must meet a minimum threshold of votes, and then the votes are weighted so that if a given album received a small number of five star votes, it would be balanced so that a four star album with a lot of votes received [...]
Happy 2013 Metal Injection Junkies! 2012 proved to be a huge year for Metal Injection and even some of us personally, but in order to see any kind of growth, you sometimes have to look to the past to notice where you stand today. Last year I created a retrospective series called On The Record ... The post Frank's Favorite Records of 1987 appeared first on Metal Injection .

Yeah, Neujahr...

2012 was an odd year for me musically, and I largely blame Spotify. The only physical musical media I buy these days is the LP, and I really only do that to help touring bands that I like and to buy reissues of my favorite albums. I still buy a lot of digital-only releases too, but when it comes to actually listening to music, I tend to rely mainly on Spotify. (Or a few specific radio shows .) Especially at work. And that's a problem, at least in terms [...]
Alright fuckers, here it is. Here's my ten favorite records of 2012. Still, like I mentioned before, most of my top 20 is somewhat interchangeable. Really, though, it has been a pretty incredible year for music. Now, by my count, 9 records from my list were self-released. That's a shit ton of bands doing things on their own and I totally support that. The other ridiculous number that jumps out at me is that our pals over at Tiny Engines are responsible for 5 records, a full 10%, on this list. Well done guys. So this is it. You can [...]

Here's part 4 of my list detailing my favorite records of 2012. For the first three parts of the list just click here . Many if not all of these could have probably been in my top ten based on the day. Enjoy. 20. Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves - Canyons (No Idea) Canyons is the second full-length from Hot Water Music co-frontman Chris Wollard and his band The Ship Thieves. It’s a driving record that combines grooving Southern rock and swampy post-punk [...]

If you missed the first two parts of the list, you can check them out right here . Also, I saw three of these bands live at Fest 11 and they were all pretty great. Enough about that, check out the list. Enjoy. 30. Julie Doiron - So Many Days (Aporia) On So Many [...]
So here's part 2 of my year-end list. If you're so inclined, you can check out part 1 right here . Maybe you'll discover something new that you really like. Finding new music that I've somehow missed during the year is one of the reasons I like reading year-end lists and one of the reasons I keep posting mine. Enjoy. 40. Ma Jolie - ...Compared To Giants (Self-Released) …Compared To Giants is the awesome debut full-length from Philadelphia’s Ma Jolie. On it, they play [...]

There was so much great music released in this year, maybe more than in any other year since I started compiling these lists. Narrowing the list down to just 50 was damn near impossible. In fact, just about everything on the list could be flipped around in some way, but these are what I've decided to go with. I'll be posting 10 of my favorite albums from 2012 each day this week with the top ten on Friday. Much more commentary to come as well. Cheers. 50. The Devil's Own [...]

Monday Afternoon Quick Fix runs every Monday afternoon to showcase the best of Chicago music news, views and stories from around the interwebs and blogosphere that we might have missed. • WBEZ's Jim DeRogatis outlines what he finds to be problematic with the recently released draft of the 2012 Chicago Cultural plan: namely, there's no real mention of the city's music scene. • Gossip Wolf delivers a double whammy of bad news with the announcement that new kids on the block Favorite Records (which opened last May in [...]
Back in the 802s.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that this Saturday, April 21, is the fourth annual Record Store Day . Like the past three years, record stores around the country are offering exclusive releases, great deals, free goodies and even in-store performances for Saturday's celebration of independently owned record stores. The event is even better if you live in Chicago because there are many great record stores strewn across the city, but it's hard to keep count of which one is doing what. Therefore, once again , we've done the dirty work for you in this [...]
