Here it is, our annual salute to the greatest of the (contemporary) greatest: our most-listened-to tracks of 2009. The usual rules apply: each band only gets one song, so despite the fact that most of our Top 10 most-listened-to 2009 tracks in ITunes are from Johnny Foreigner 's superlative Grace And The Bigger Picture , only the most-played track gets a slot on our list below. The main reason for doing this list is to spotlight great songs that might not have been on an album that warrants best-of-the-best status for the year. The inclusion of George [...]
I'm going on holiday tomorrow and will be gone for a week. To make up for the complete lack of posts over the next weeks, I'm giving you a few songs that I've been into recently. I'll probably do more in-depth posts on the band when I return but for now, just listen. Great Bloomers - Catching Up Favours For Sailors - Erode My Empire Calexico - Man Made Lake Filthy Dukes - Nonsense In The Dark [...]
Favours for Sailors sound like a crazy mix of the View and the Beachboys – chaotic yet melodic. There's a great intro piece over on Drowned in Sound here , and FOUR free MP3s below that they recorded for a radio session recently. MP3: Favours For Sailors - I Dreamt that you Dreamt that you Loved me in your Dreams MP3: Favours For Sailors - Erode my Empire MP3: Favours For Sailors - Our Name [...]

Favours for Sailors are a band that I've liked from afar from sometime. I've always heard their songs through other bands they know, or as support to another band live. Their song Erode My Empire is one that I've known on and off for three years now, and it's still doing the rounds. In other bands this could be a sign of a worrying lack of creativity, but it seems Favours for Sailors are going to keep pushing it for as long as it sounds fresh. And if these radio session [...]

Words by Oliver Primus Photography by Tim Boddy Saturday afternoon saw the return of The 405 at the Notting Hill Arts Club and it coudln't have gone any better. Duke Raoul, Favours For Sailors, 4 or 5 Magicians and Stagecoach pulled out all the stops, Wil Cook played some amazing songs and the fine people that turned up spent the afternoon/evening watching some great bands and drawing us some amazing pictures (more on that very soon!) We've got loads of photo's to share with you over the next few days but here's a litte taster [...]
One day left! ONE DAY LEFT I SAY! Oh! How the excitement is near unbearable. As the days, hours, even minutes tick by, we here at The405 are becoming ever more intoxicated on the thought of what wonderment tomorrow will bring. The Notting Hill Arts Club, 4-8pm, FREE ENTRY, what more could you ask for of a Saturday afternoon? I can't fathom a possible answer other than stated happenings! We have enjoyed interviews and biogs from 4or5 Magicians and Duke Raoul already this week so go and check them out if you have not [...]

Artist: Favours for Sailors Album: Furious Sons Label: Tough Love Records Release Date: Out now Link: www.myspace.com/favours4sail ors Words by: Will Slater One of the many benefits you will get out of coming to our very special event at Notting Hill Arts Club this Saturday is of hearing some of the tracks from this mini album straight from the horse's mouth. The opening to the album is explosive. The party starting 'Erode My Empire' yells at you and urges [...]

Quite a thin week by recent standards actually, but that's no bad thing. Homegame is approaching and a weekend that is easy on the liver and easy on the wallet will be a very good thing. Plus we have to spend it all making up copies of the new Meursault EP, Nothing Broke. Yes, you heard me right. Terribly exciting, wot. It will mark the first offical outing for crowd favourite William Henry Miller Pt.1, albeit an acoustic version of the song, the full version of which will be available along with The Furnace, The Dirt & the Roots and [...]

It's just sleeping, and consequently needs poking with a stick every now and again. Sorry for not updating since 2008 - I've been stuck in student hell. Not to say there's been nothing to write about, but I've been doing it for other places. This place will continue to get infrequently updated, but in the meantime, do check out some of the other places I speak my branes. The Singles Jukebox Returning from internet purgatory, the man, the legend William B. Swygart has resurrected his Singles Jukebox (synopsis: jaded rock hacks write about pop [...]

---English--- Favours for Sailors are a London quartet with their eyes and ears placed on the other side of the Ocean, from where they get influences of bans like [...]
>>After tips from the sadly defunct Beatcast and Exitfare we downloaded from EMusic Favours For Sailors ' terrific EP Furious Sons . The set was released earlier this month and it totally delivers. Folks are bandying about Pavement comparisons, but we think the London-based foursome hews more closely to the quirky pop sound of Weezer and The Cars . The video above is from Favours For Sailors ' triumphant November 2008 set at New Slang in Kingston, England, and it features what will likely be the act's breakout song, "I [...]
I just discovered something totally awesome. Well, I'd discovered it about a week ago but only decided to have a look just now and it has already made me happy for the rest of the day. Basically, a whole lot of my favourite bands have teamed up and started a blog called Awesome Pals . The underlying idea is that music business today is very competitive but these bands just wanna be pals and share their witty thoughts with the world. But what bands are they then? Los Campesinos!, Sky Larkin, [...]

Favours For Sailors may hail from London, but it's obvious that they were raised on American indie rock. Their tunes recall the likes of Pavement or Weezer, but with a penchant for big pop moments. It's music that's made for playing at top volume on the motorways at the height of summer. The band's debut EP, Furious Sons , was just released last week on Tough Love Records. Keep an eye out for the band on XFM later this month, as well as several dates with Dananananaykroyd. [...]

Talk about your unwieldy band names. Getting the right amount of anananana is bad enough, but then there's the double header of Aykroyd not being the simplest name to spell either. The funny thing is that the music fits the name. If you'd asked me beforehand what I'd think a band called Dananananaykroyd would sound like, I'd go with loud and fast. And that's exactly what we have. The thing that takes one aback about Glasgow's Dananananaykroyd is just how loud and fast it is. The vocals jump straight in, not sung, but [...]

I can't say that I'm as big a fan of Sundays as most people. I've never really done the relaxing morning newspaper and coffee thing; I haven't watched Meet the Press since Tim Russert died; I stopped watching much in the way of sports over the last year or two (aside from Univ. of Michigan sports and the Red Wings); and, let's be serious here, Sunday's just aren't as good without The Wire . That said, one thing that has the ability to completely make my Sunday is the discovery of a new band [...]

(Continued from yesterday.) Please spend time listening to all these bands in these posts. They deserve your attention. Thank you. (More tomorrow.) Klak Tik - Culinary Skills Of A Modern Man Shelby Sifers - Are You Devo? [ The Spirituals Remix] Favours For [...]
Be Kind Rewind was the last time I sat in a cinema and practically convulsed with laughter all the way through. Now, a clubnight has emerged that combines the lo-fi film making aesthetic of the film with hot live music. The film above is the result of the first Videopia at Notting Hill Arts Club, the 'sweded' film being 80's classic, Back to the Future. Tomorrow's event will see ET being reproduced. The below bands will follow to rock your world. 7-9pm FILMING E.T 9pm [...]

I've seen three awards-season-tipped movies this week (The Wrestler being the best) so as a result, two Oscar/Bafta film soundtrack songs are in the ten this week (The other eight are damn fine too): On a recent shopping trip I managed to pick up a promo of Brakes' forthcoming album. Oh boy is it a good one, displaying a tendency to genre hop from Indie to Punk and from Rock to Country but at the same time sounding chock full of confidence. Here's opener 'Two Shocks', which morphs from a [...]

I'll tell you what appeals to me about London-based quartet Favours for Sailors: They've got a guitar-driven, very catchy sound reminiscent of Television, and they describe themselves as "Becks-fueled." Becks being my beer-of-choice at my gentleman's club-of-choice (pay no attention to the blatant attempt at landing a sponsor). Favours for Sailors comes from London, where they formed in late 2005 after Alex Bratt arrived in town and reunited with university friend Jon Crawford. The two started practicing together in an old leather factory, forging an early post-hardcore sound of unplayable, mathy [...]
