A couple of years ago, Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Son Volt's Jay Farrar met while working together on a Jim Sampas documentary about Jack Kerouac. During this experience, the two decided to work together to create an album based on the words of Kerouac's 1962 novel Big Sur. The book recounts Kerouac's personal retreats out to a cabin in Bixby Canyon called "Big Sur". The finished product, One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur, will be released on Atlantic Records next Tuesday, Oct 20th. Thanks to NPR you can preview the album right [...]

Mouthful Of Bees recieved a pretty delightful review in this week's City Pages. Read it here . Music in the Office: *MP3: Feist & Ben Gibbard - "Train Song" *MP3: French Kicks - "One More Time"

A few songs I have been feeling lately. I'm On Fire - Bat For Lashes Tusk - Fleetwood Mac Crystalised - The xx Train Song - Feist + Ben Gibbard The xx have become the band to watch in 2009 and if you watch this video [...]

Why does it seem like only now, with just a week before the show, is promotion occuring for Dark Was The Night at Radio City Music Hall? I've seen advertisements (posters/flyers) all over downtown, yet I hadn't seen in anything less than a week ago. Can someone tell me what's up? In case you haven't heard, a small group of the album contributors are performing May 3, 8 p.m. at Radio City Music Hall. Contributors include Bon Iver, David Byrne, Dirty Projectors, Feist, My Brightest Diamond, The National (obviously - they made this all happen), Sharon [...]

I've been a huge fan of Feist since the early Monarch days... It can be said she amassed a bigger following (and chart recognition) after her single 1 2 3 4 was licensed to Apple for their worldwide iPod nano adverts, but realistically it was well deserved. After releasing her debut album Monarch (Lay Down your Jewelled Head) in 1999, she went on to form indie darlings Broken Social Scene with Brandon Canning and Kevin Drew in 1991, released Let it Die in 2004, and The Reminder in 2007. I've thrown together a couple [...]

Various Artists Dark Was The Night This was a project sponsored by the Red Hot Organization, a charity for HIV awareness, and spearheaded by The National 's Aaron and Bryce Dessner. They collected a who's who of Indie artists for this 2 CD [...]

I'm heading down to Orlando for a long weekend of golf at the company's expense. Not bad work if you can get it, eh? I think I'm along for comic relief, because I'm not a very good golfer. I think Golf is one of those games you have to play all the time in order to get any good at it. Still I'm glad to get out of the Midwest chill and in some warm weather. [...]

First off I'll start by saying that I only intended to purchase M. Ward's Hold Time and Asobi Seksu's Hush today. I walked out of my local record store with three albums. Hold Time , the new Audrye Sessions self-titled debut album, and the Dark Was The Night compilation AIDS benefit album. And no Asobi Seksu - I guess that'll have to wait. And I felt pretty damn good. It's great to not only buy CDs, but support local artists and an organization at the same time. Power to [...]
Albums are usually released on Tuesdays, and today is no different. There's a plethora (what IS a plethora?) of Cd's to check out… here are just a few to perk your ears up to. Containing exclusive original songs and covers, the release is available in double cd, triple vinyl and digital download formats. Profits from the sales will benefit the Red Hot Organization [...]

REMINDER:: WATCH THE GRAMMYS TONIGHT ON CBS 8PM ET/PT! Have you ever tried counting how many times you say "Fuck My Life" out loud? No? You should. The results may shock you. I stopped counting after my tally hit 13. Maybe I'm just a big whiner, but a couple of days ago I created this playlist on my iPod to de-stress myself. It features some great tunes that have always made me happy and don't remind me of anything negative - good vibes all around. It worked out pretty well. So when [...]

Yes, that is the new Toad t-shirt, which can be purchased here , and bears the inspiring and uplifting slogan 'Up yours, Eagletits.' Well there's been some good live music recently, and last night was another excellent Limbo night. All three bands were really good and even though it was a late one, there wasn't an excessive amount of drunkenness, so apart from being rather tired I actually feel pretty reasonable this morning. Quick question for you all, in advance of the Friday Fives - even though it's now woefully late, would you appreciate a live review [...]

Check out two really, really nice tracks from the wonderful Ms. Feist. The two tracks are from a new compilation album, "Dark Was The Night," put together to raise awareness about AIDS. If you think you can handle suffering a minor seizure from its sheer indieness, you can peep the album's tracklist below (we will fo sho be blogging about the album in the near future!!). Anyway, Feist appears twice on the album, once with Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie on Train Song , and the second, Service Bel l, with Grizzly Bear. They are both [...]

Feist recently lent her voice for Dark Was The Night , a great cause raising awareness and money for HIV/Aids. She appeared on two of the 31 songs that span the 2 discs that make up the compilation. The first song Feist appears in, "Train Song" features vocals from Death Cab For Cutie/Postal Service vocalist Ben Gibbard. You know how I love boy-girl songs, and I can't picture a more perfect vocal coupling than Feist and Ben Gibbard. Well maybe Gibbard's real-life fiance Zooey Deschanel - but I'll leave my dreams for the [...]

feist & ben gibbard // train song cat power // dark end of the street m. ward // never had nobody like you (ft. zooey deschanel)

So by now most have heard of this AIDS compilation that has everyone and their brother on it. Not sure if we have ever seen such a great combination of artists for a compilation. Have a look below at the track list if you haven't already. Sufjan's ten minute trip fest? Bon Iver singing falsetto over electric guitar? Ben Gibbard with Feist? Dirty Projectors with David Byrne? Grizzly Bear and Feist? There are some interesting match-ups and from what we have heard of the album so far, the artists aren't just treating this like some small charity deal, [...]

Photography by Dominika Happy happy Friday everyone! WOOT! Been a crazy week (again) but it's coming to a close (finally), but man I'm so thankful to have had today's album to keep me company.... As you know, I'm more of an album guy, I don't care for singles and what not, I like to hear albums start to finish, to see an artist's vision. BUT, as you also know, I love me a good mixtape , the ability to express one's self by carefully building a new [...]

The Red Hot Organization is releasing Dark Was the Night on Feb. 17th, a 2 disc/triple vinyl comp. to raise cash and awareness to HIV causes. The Comp. looks to good to be true, with new songs from artists like Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, My Morning Jacket, Yeasayer, The National, Yo La Tengo and singular members from every awesome band ever doin' thangs with other awesome members of other awesome bands. It was produced by Bryce and Aaron Dessner from the National (you know, those two twins who make beautiful music and put up with Matt Berninger.) The album started [...]
An extra-long roundup this week (and a day early!) to make up for my tardiness last week. And included are some tracks from the upcoming Dark Was the Night compilation album coming out February 17th of this year to benefit the Red Hot Organization - an international charity dedicated to raising money and awareness for HIV and AIDS through popular culture. "Deep Blue Sea," "Knotty Pine," and "Train Song" are all on the album, with plenty more besides (for a full track listing, click here - doesn't it sound marvelous)? I also threw [...]
