It's finally December, which means that great new album releases are harder and harder to find. I'm pretty comfortable finalizing my top 10 list, even though there's an entire month left for a breathtaking record to be released. A couple of years ago, Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Son Volt's Jay Farrar met while working together on a Jim Sampas documentary about Jack Kerouac. During this experience, the two decided to work together to create an album based on the words of Kerouac's 1962 novel Big Sur. The book recounts Kerouac's personal retreats out to a cabin in Bixby Canyon called "Big Sur". The finished product, One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur, will be released on Atlantic Records next Tuesday, Oct 20th. Why does it seem like only now, with just a week before the show, is promotion occuring for Dark Was The Night at Radio City Music Hall? I've seen advertisements (posters/flyers) all over downtown, yet I hadn't seen in anything less than a week ago. Can someone tell me what's up? I've been a huge fan of Feist since the early Monarch days... It can be said she amassed a bigger following (and chart recognition) after her single 1 2 3 4 was licensed to Apple for their worldwide iPod nano adverts, but realistically it was well deserved. After releasing her debut album Monarch (Lay Down your Jewelled Head) in 1999, she went on to form indie darlings Broken Social Scene with Brandon Canning and Kevin Drew in 1991, released Let it Die in 2004, and The Reminder in 2007. First off I'll start by saying that I only intended to purchase M. Ward's Hold Time and Asobi Seksu's Hush today. I walked out of my local record store with three albums. Hold Time , the new Audrye Sessions self-titled debut album, and the Dark Was The Night compilation AIDS benefit album. And no Asobi Seksu - I guess that'll have to wait. And I felt pretty damn good. Feist recently lent her voice for Dark Was The Night , a great cause raising awareness and money for HIV/Aids. She appeared on two of the 31 songs that span the 2 discs that make up the compilation. The first song Feist appears in, "Train Song" features vocals from Death Cab For Cutie/Postal Service vocalist Ben Gibbard. You know how I love boy-girl songs, and I can't picture a more perfect vocal coupling than Feist and Ben Gibbard.
