Next Tuesday, May 28th, will see a highly anticipated release marking phemomenal indie label Arts & Crafts ten years in operation. To mark this feat of 'earmanship', Toronto's most impressive label will give us 'X', a collaborative effort from many shining stars off the label. Before there was indie music, there was underground music, which was essentially the same thing as what we now call indie, except, as the name implies, no one knew about it. In the '70s and '80s, there were reasons for why music was relegated to pop-up venues and warehouses and basements. Music of the underground could be abrasive or it could be druggy, but regardless of the particulars, it didn’t mix with the mainstream because it deliberately did not appeal to the traditional societal standards.

This year, famed Canadian indie label Arts & Crafts is celebrating its 10th anniversary. As part of the festivities, they've issued a retrospective album and will stage the Field Trip Festival this June. They've also just announced plans for a new compilation titled X , which collects new collaborations between acts on its roster. The 10-track album features both original compositions and re-interpretations from artists Broken Social Scene , Feist , Stars , Chilly Gonzales , Timber Timbre, Dan Mangan, and many more. Who doesn’t love Feist ? Her voice is phenomenal and her style is impeccable. The overall Feist sound is incredibly avantgarde and in this listener’s humble opinion, fan-freaking-tastic. Dig this remix of Mushaboom from The Postal Service.
