Did You Hear? :: Katy Perry has won Billboard 's Woman of the Year Award. While you could argue her 2011 was more impressive, this year she accomplished quite a lot, including a world tour, releasing "Wide Awake," starring in a 3-D movie and a Sims video game, oh and dropping Russell Brand. [ Billboard ] :: More awards! Feist beat out the likes of Drake and Japandroids [...]

Monday night's Polaris Music Prize Gala had a lot of people scratching their heads wondering who would take home the prize. For me, the outcome never seems like a sure thing, despite what a number of armchair critics were tweeting about when Feist took home the prize. There's still a fair bit of confusion about how this process works, and how the outcome is decided each September. I've not sat as a member of a Polaris grand jury, but I know enough from my Polaris experience that the [...]

Last night the Polaris Prize gala rolled into the Masonic Temple at Yonge and Church, and for the second year in a row a Canadian heavyweight took the prize. Presented by "Tim and Jim" of last year's winners The Arcade Fire, Feist crawled under her table in response to hearing her name. She was admittedly as surprised as many of us were. Metals is, of course, a fantastic album, and I think shows Feist at her most confident: the tracks come off as effortless and [...]

Every year, a small panel of Canadian music heads gets together and awards the Polaris Music Prize to its pick for the best Canadian album of the year. The winner gets the prize at a big televised gala and gets to take home $30,000, and this year's lineup of nominees was absolutely stacked. It included Drake, Japandroids, Grimes, Handsome Furs, Kathleen Edwards, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, and past winners Fucked Up and Cadence Weapon. But the winner, as it turned out was Feist, for Metals . The lesson, as always: Do not underestimate [...]

In a surprising move, last night Feist won the 2012 Polaris Prize for her album Metals . I say surprising because the album was, well, just not that good. In fact, it was one of the biggest disappointments of the year. To be honest, it seems like a compromise pick. It's like Joe Clark (look it up), he was nobodies first pick, but someone enough people felt okay about to give him the nod. This is the second year in a row [...]

Penguin The 2012 Polaris Music Prize gets awarded tonight, so in honour of the occasion, here's a bunch of maple-flavoured content led off by a Canadian icon who hasn't lived in Canada in some 40-plus years. Yeah! If you have some time to kill and an interest in who Neil Young is circa 2012, you could do worse than to spend it with this feature piece at The New York Times . It covers his current relationship with alcohol and drugs - there is none - as [...]

Today, as you may know, is the release of the iPhone 5 and yes, I'm one of those dorks that got up in the middle of the night and waited in line to get my hands on the phone early (deal with it). In honor of the new device (which I'm completely loving, by the way, iOS6 Maps aside), I've made a mix of my favorite tracks to use as ringtones, which you can download below for your own shiny new iPhones or your old, outdated iPhone 4S. What makes a great ringtone track you say? [...]
