Edzayawa - Gondzin by Soundway Soundway have dug this nugget of an album straight out of West-Africa. Sat alongside BLO's Last Chapter and Mono Mono's Give the Begger A Chance as one of the earliest Afro-rock LP, Project One by Ghanian rock outfit Edzayawa has been out of print for 40 years and only now it getting a much needed a reissue on gatefold vinyl and CD in February. Gondzin is the only teaser we have to go on, there's a motorik almost krautrock feel to that delicious [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Between the Notes Getty, Asylum, Getty Although actors-turned-politicians like Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger get most of the attention, they're not the only entertainers to throw their hats into the political arena. Plenty of musicians have tried to bridge the gap between public performance and public service. Some have even succeeded. The latest musician to attempt this is Youssou N'Dour . The Grammy-winning Senegalese singer -- best [...]

Underground System was among the better recordings of Fela's late career, comprised of two extended tracks, the title cut and "Pansa Pansa." "Underground System" starts off with rhythms that are far faster and more urgent than those on most of Fela's characteristically lengthy tracks. If that sounds like a marginal quality upon which to judge a song as a standout, well, something like a much
Recorded in 1969 under duress courtesy of the Department of Immigration and Naturalization, the Los Angeles Sessions are among the earliest glimpse of Fela Anikulapo Kuti's developing Afrobeat sound. What makes this release different from much of his recorded work is the length and number of songs: ten tracks, average length 4:39. Unusual, since most Fela material is 15 minutes or more. The
The U Street Corridor is known for the variety of bars and clubs lining this busy stretch of the city. And over the last decade, one of the most consistent forces behind the expansion of this neighborhood and some of its more interesting venues has been Eric Hilton. With restaraunts and bars like Marvin, Gibson, Blackbyrd, and American Ice Company under his belt, Hilton has shown no signs of slowing down his efforts at helping to reshape the neighborhood. One of the newest locations he's had a hand in, and probably the most understated, is Montserrat House . [...]

So I've returned to Connecticut for the next couple of days to enjoy the pleasures of nature and family. I don't plan on doing much work, which is good because I have a few posts that I've been waiting to put up for the past couple weeks. It's been busy but life is always busy. There are no excuses as to why, and it's pointless when we try to explain our lack of time organization, as if somehow defending our right to be busy. The truth is that some things just get priority, and when they do, you just have [...]

Chances are you already know Anthony Fantano as "the Internet's busiest music nerd" over at his killer website, the Needle Drop . If you somehow aren't acquainted with his witty, sharp knowledge of music, then let this serve as an introduction. We reached out to Anthony to host our latest guest podcast, something we've done before with Potholes favorites such as Paul White and Keep Shelly in Athens . But this time around, we wanted to do something different to highlight the great work of a fellow music lover. As suc, there was no [...]
Separating the wheat from the chaff in the world of mashups can be a tough task, but every now and again a real gem springs itself on us. Gummy Soul's Amerigo Gazaway has done just that, pairing De La Soul with Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti to create Fela Soul. It is a very enjoyable 33 minute journey into the [...]
When I'm listening to Tall Black Guy it's like I'm in the basement of a club as a DJ spins his beats. The clarity is muttled, the bright synths have been mellowed and snares reverb off the walls. Fresh off of Darling Lure , his collab album with The Primeridian , he's still out there killing it. "Water No Enemy" is his interpretation of Fela Kuti's "Water No Get Enemy". It's so chill. It's just so damn good. It's featured on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Bubblers Seven , which is more reason to pick up the project. It's [...]

We've had the Ghostface Killah vs African Highlife mashup album. Now, it's De La's turn as they are paired up with Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti by Gummy Soul's Amerigo Gazaway. Fela Soul is a very listenable 33 minute mix of mashups over 8-tracks. Listen and download below: Fela Soul by Amerigo Gazaway of Gummy Soul
Fela Soul by Amerigo Gazaway of Gummy Soul Yep, this exists. It's a Fela Kuti / De La Soul mashup mixtape. I like that the sampled Kuti tracks actually compliment De La Soul's rhymes, too. Feels authentic. Feels like something I'd actually return to instead of gawk at for a few minutes. Props to Afropop Worldwide for posting this! / via /
Chances are French/Benin Afro-synthpop artist Wally Badarou appears on at least one of the albums in your collection that for a while you just couldn't stop listening to and couldn't figure out why. Working with Robert Palmer, Marianne Faithfull, Fela Kuti, Herbie Hancock, M (Pop Muzik), Talking Heads, Foreigner, Power Station, Melissa Etheridge, Manu Dibango, Miriam Makeb and even writing for the beautiful 1985 film 'Kiss Of The Spider Woman'. This impossibly funky ear-worm comes off his first solo album, 19792s Back To The Scales To-night . MP3: Wally [...]

For your weekend listening pleasure, two things that go very well together, De La Soul and Fela Kuti. Produced by Gummy Soul, you can get it on their bandcamp page . You will especially want to listen to the mashup of "Feel Good Inc" (Gorillaz w/ De La Soul). Fela Soul by Amerigo Gazaway of Gummy Soul
Why wouldn't Potholes love this mix? What is there not to love? Producer Amerigo Gazaway takes De La Soul joints and Fela Kuti samples to create "afrobeat rhythms, funky horn riffs, and classic hip-hop gems." Mashup albums are like this: terrible, forgetful, 'why? why?' or amazing, interesting, inventive. In this case, it's refreshing. He remolds the Gorillaz hit, "Feel Good Inc." and De La's "Rock Co.Kane Flow" featuring MF DOOM (all caps ya'll). Track after track is jam packed with piano stabs, fantastic, boombastic drum hits and a '90s dance-floor energy. It's De La Soul and [...]

- Posted by Eric B - I'm not a huge fan of mash-ups but when you combine one of my favorite hip hop artists of all time in De La Soul with one of the legendary pioneers of funk in Fela Kuti, you have a winner in my book. See for yourself by checking out producer Amerigo Gazaway's project entitled "Fela Soul". You can check out the link to download the mixtape here .
