by marc amigone Fela! , an offbroadway musical that runs through the end of September at 37 Arts Theater, celebrates the life of Fela Anikulapo Kuti by bringing his music to life with captivating choreography, telling part of his story, and paying tribute to the legacy of his international protest voice. An ensemble cast of twenty-six actors, dancers, and musicians uses music, dance, video and still projections to tell stories from Fela's life. Sahr Ngaujah , who starred in the title role, had all of Fela's charisma [...]
As someone who spent a few years deeply obsessed with Fela's catalog (the vinyl reissues came with trading cards of his wives!), the idea of an off-Broadway musical based on his life threw me for a loop, even with prominent Afrobeat soundalikes Antibalas as the house band. Still, the guy playing Fela in the above commercial seems believable, and Fela's life story is certainly interesting enough to fill the space between his songs, so maybe this could be the new Rent , or at least the version of Rent that's about Nigerians struggling under [...]

Fela Kuti Afrobeat Afrobeat is a combination of American jazz, funk and Nigerian beat. It was created by Africa's most outspoken artist, the late Fela Ransome Anikulapo of Nigeria in the early 70s at the time British rock and American soul music was dominating most of Africa's music scene. Fela introduced his brand of style to stop the British musical invasion. The closest I've come to experiencing Fela's music was through his youngest son Seun Kuti at The El Rey [...]

Broken beat conglomerate Bugz In The Attic (along with a likkle vocal help from Wunmi ), remake Fela Kuti 's venerable dig at Nigerian soldiers, Zombie . Bugz in the Attic - Zombie Bugz in the Attic - Zombie 2003 Enjoy! LS
Filed under: Around the World Spinner.com : The Orange County, Calif., Sheriff's Department and pioneering electronic musician-composer Morton Subotnick don't usually converge. Not to mention Afrobeat king Fela Kuti. But all figured in a Sunday afternoon performance by the band Nomo at Amoeba... Read more

Tribute bands -- have they gone too far? Test that question for yourself this Saturday night when Heart & Soul: a Tribute to Huey Lewis & the News goes back in time to look for a new drug and finds itself happy to be stuck with you on the Riot Room 's patio. This is the first performance by this local eight-piece band, which is fronted by erstwhile Misery Boy Blackjack [...]

Amazing Fela Kuti jam in all its full glory. A little overlooked because there are so many other great Kuti tracks. Worth 10 minutes or more of your time. Check it. Fela Kuti - He Miss Road
[Most of what we post on this site are new releases, but our tastes are all over the map. This weekly feature is a snapshot of what the Stranger Dance staff can't get out of their collective head each week. On any given week, we might be digging a new local act, an old jazz chestnut, the newest Japanese electro-folk or whatever else we've got on the turntable/iPod that week.] This week's picks are a little on the funkier side for us, with a legitimate house track, a thick slab of Afrobeat funk and some electro-funk [...]

Playlist for Spin The Globe - KAOS radio 27 June 2008 This week's show was prompted by the current tour of Seun Kuti , son of the great Afrobeat creator Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Well, one of his sons, from one of his many marriages. Since Seun's people have yet to send any of his music to SoundRoots/KAOS (hello! people!), we spun music from another son -- Femi -- as well as from musicians who inspired or were inspired by Fela. The second hour found us spinning the globe more broadly. [...]

In fact, for the last month or so I've listened to little else. A massive artist in many ways. Of course I've been aware of Fela for quite some time -- amazingly, my parents saw [...]

This is probably the most excited I've been since I started doing this four weeks ago . One track that deserves special attention is Jon Lucien 's "Search for the Inner Self," another sickening piece of the flawless Gilles Peterson Digs America collection of Jazz & Soul. Also, I had to give Deerhunter two tracks on this episode of Meow Mix because ever since a friend recommended Cryptograms I haven't been able to stop listening. Hopefully this finds you all a little less woeful [...]
The thing about English record shops is that they know their stuff. They've got the cool records. But they also know what they're worth. You will not find a bargain in such an environment. There is a certain kind of experience I only have in a London record shop. In 1989, I walked into an establishment and almost immediately, they started playing Dennis Coffey and the Detroit Guitar Band's 1971 album Evolution . The first track is "Getting It On," which was sampled for "You're Gonna Get Yours," the first track [...]

Fela Kuti - "Monkey Banana" [1976] (Comes from an album of the same name, also found on the b-side of a later pressing of Zombie ... magic stuff.)
Fela Kuti - Water No Get Enemy A little something from Afro Beat legend, activist and general dude Fela Kuti. This tune typifies all that is great about his music. Tony Allen's percussion is rock solid and the horns are rip roaring. The message behind so many of his tunes is depressingly relevant today. This tune is taken from the album 'Expensive Shit'. Apparently Nigerian police arrested Fela Kuti and planted a spliff on his person, which he subsequently ate in a bid to avoid prosecution. He [...]

"Let's start what we have come into the room to do"... For today's post we wanted to take on the extended form & those revolutionary sounds of that afrobeat king, Fela Kuti. A man who took the sounds of James Brown and extended them into the far reaches of funk. For ages now we've wanted to introduce one of our personal favorite live albums Live! Fela Ransome-Kuti and the Africa '70 w/ Ginger Baker to the patients of the 115th Dream . Released in 1971, but we didn't get around to it [...]
Here we are...pretty knackered on the fourth Thursday of November. Today is the day when we gather at the asylum for our very own spicy icin' Thanksgivin' classic to boogie woogie and have a bonanza of twenty-two pound turkeys, mashed potatoes, wild rice, squash & pumpkin pies! For todays post we have collected a few faves old 'n new that are rockin' our rock 'n roll stethoscopes. So for those patients who like to rock to the frozen winds and you patients that like to roll to them electric sounds take a listen. [...]

recently, the cover of radiohead 's in rainbows was released. unfortunately, no album artwork ever graced our downloaded zip file but now its nice to have something official . its been quite the experience enjoying this entire album, taking in what is new and combining all the emotions of love, chaos and uncertainty that comes with listening to your favorite band's recent release. only radiohead could get away with placing their music online, having their faithful fans pay as they choose and placing us all into some type of pyschedelic and colorful daze. in support [...]
