German ambient drone maestro Markus Mehr will be following up his stunning debut album Lava with not one, not two, but three Hidden Shoal releases across 2012 and 2013. The first part of the triptych, In , will be released on 26 January 2012. It comprises two monumental tracks, 'Komo' and 'Ostinato', each of which clocks in at around 25 minutes, circling around and building upon hypnotic instrumental motifs. You can take a sneak peek at what's in store by viewing some live footage of Mehr's performing ' Komo [...]
We Don't Look Back For Very Long , the recently released collaboration between Antonymes and Slow Dancing Society, is currently sitting pretty at number 12 on the Asheville FM CMJ Top 30 charts and number 3 on their Classical/Ambient charts along with the likes of Fennesz, Chubby Wolf, Wolves In The Throne Room and Zola Jesus to name a few. The EP is now availble in MP3 and lossless formats and was also released as a limited edition CD package. If you missed out on the CD through Hidden Shoal there may still be limited stock [...]
The forthcoming double-disc album Flumina is a team-up between two titans of arted-up ambient music: Christian Fennesz, from Austria, and Ryuici Sakamoto, from Japan. For the album, Sakamato recorded 24 different improvisational piano pieces in 24 different keys, and then sent them to Fennesz, who reworked them with his usual evocative-reverb style. Below, grab "0318," the album's opening track. Read More...

This EP is excellently done, and every song except the title track is a wonderful, drone and glitch-filled pop delight. Delicate and graceful melodies slip between the cracks of digital wreckage, or sometimes emerge from the careful piling of glitch and drones. There is an arc to Mario Gonzalez's Lindsay Lohan Likes Blood EP. Gonzalez [...]

Renown and world wide acclaimed Japanese pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto and Austrian electronic experimental virtuoso Christian Fennezs new collaboration is a absolute wonder of class, the double LP is creamed with melancholic and minimal pianos by Mr Sakamoto and Fennezs with his powerful arsenal of beautiful and epic soundscapes. "Flumina" is the follow up from the duo mindblowing 2007 first LP "Cendre" Highly Recommended for any experimental electronic music, ambient and Modern Classical fans. Flumina is only available in Japan but soon printed worldwide by Touch Listen | Fennesz & Sakamoto - [...]

Obscured by a spattering of scaffolding that seems progressively more intent on obscuring the external grandiosity of Islington's Union Chapel as not only months but seasons flutter by, a solemnity customary of any ecclesial construction swamps its interior. Tonight, this particular house of worship has been infiltrated by the Barbican, as their annual Transcender series takes to incontrovertibly resplendent surrounds. Eat Your Own Ears listings replace hymnbooks in the backs of rigid pews; iPhones click impatiently; footsteps pitter and patter from lamentably understocked merch stand, to bar, to backbench. Tonight errs on the side of the spectacular in [...]

Footnote to yesterday's track of the day from Fennesz : a preview of Seven Stars ' "certain lightness" - from the luscious but ultimately somewhat unsatisfying Liminal & title track (for all its jazzy brushwork) to the more wholesome Shift & July (the former a deep, gripping drone, the latter a beautifully resolved arc out of knotty abstraction) - for the non- Spotty ... Blurb: " [...]

No disrespect to The Liminal , obviously, but to these ears the most compelling recent sliver of Fennesz isn't his recent hymn to the must-read site but rather today's track of the day - his vaporous, almost mournful follow blind piece for the recent Morning Line 'pavilion' in Vienna . (It's one of several lovely responses to the installation: hear Terre Thaemlitz [...]

Words by Jacob Barron This column completes the quartet of seasonal soundtracking opportunities, and, appropriately, marks the column's unofficial one-year anniversary. Happy birthday soundtracking! I know we didn't post autumn until September last year, but whatever! I'm trying to get you a free dessert from Applebee's, soundtracking, so shut up and be cool. In addition to autumn, we've been through winter and spring , leading us inexorably on to summer, which I think is easily the easiest [...]

Kiloton - Language Lost (Side B) from Urlyd Audiovisual Recordings on Vimeo . This from Kiloton 's Language Lost DVD via Urlyd - a bunch of Danes spurning Geld to give quality electronic music and video on vinyl/DVD releases. The ideology of the label, we're told, "is to embrace net culture and enthusiastic music lovers' impulse to share with each other." And who are we to argue with a gratis Dane. Kiloton is, it emerges after a sneaky search, [...]

Before I heard Endless Summer , I admit thinking that electronic music could not be quite as expressive as jazz or rock. As a non-electronic musician, it was hard to understand that sounds made by a computer could have artistic significance. How could 'feel' and 'movement' exist in a music where the artist's touch was so physically limited? This was the album that changed my mind. I came to this realization that in the end, the physical freedom of the artist is not nearly as important as his mental freedom. Just as its title suggests, Endless Summer [...]
