photo by Shawn Robbins If you are unfamiliar with Seattle's Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival ; basically it's probably one of the more organized, locally focused, and better concert festivals of it's kind. Held every Labor Day weekend since 1971 at the Seattle Center, which was built for the 1962 World's Fair, Bumbershoot utilizes the center's various indoor theaters, outdoor stages, McCaw Hall, and Memorial Stadium. The name of the festival was taken from bumbershoot, a colloquial term for umbrella, which makes sense for a city known for it's constant rainy weather. So, [...]

Blood Red Dancers ::: photo by Abbey Simmons "We've come a long way together…through the hard times and the good…" You begin your day with three other people sardined into your twin-size bed and a Fatboy Slim song blasting on your alarm clock radio. Who knew the Fruit Bats would be Seattle's best aphrodisiac? I'm not saying [...]

Wild Orchid Children at the Cha Cha - CHBP 2008 ::: photo by Abbey Simmons Just when you thought you didn't have that many scheduling dilemmas for this years Capitol Hill Block Party, comes the Cha Cha's CHBP line-up and it certainly complicates my plans. For me, it's not really Capitol Hill Block Party without a [...]

Sleepy Eyes of Death ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth Attempting to talk about Sleepy Eyes of Death is akin to "dancing about architecture," a fruitless effort of useless comparisons and not-good-enough adjectives. Trying to box them into "post-rock" is lazy and incomplete. Technology can accomplish more now than ever before and the guitar is no longer [...]
Prepare yourself for a whole new light of notion and pondering with Feral Children's sophomore release Brand New Blood. This Seattle based quintet moves their genuine and original hysterics in a much calmer matter than in their previous efforts. But, like Fitzgerald in his later years, it was in these calm efforts that [...]
Seattle's sentient synth-scholars Sleepy Eyes of Death are prepping for the release of their 2nd full-length, Toward A Damaged Horizon . The album will be available May 4 , but the band has upped the first song to their myspace , "Data Graves" (more synthetic/organic dual naming conventions!). Much like previous efforts, the band is still exploring the slow-searing girth of cinematic sonic barrages . I'm more a fan of Street Lights For A Ribcage than Dark Signals , [...]
"Well, it's Friday - the last day of our Sarathan Records spotlight. This week, each band shared an exclusive song, selected just for The Vinyl District in celebration of the upcoming Record Store Day (April 17th). Don't fret that our week is over - we have more music to share! Two more songs from Thunder Buffalo, Two Loons for Tea, Feral Children, Peter Bradley Adams and War Tapes. [...]

On Saturday Feb 20th , there is a full slate of local rock all smashed into the Comet - likely to cause a total implosion of awesome. Former lead man of the COPS (RIP) Mike Jaworski takes the front again with his newest and greatest project, Virgin Islands. They have only have a single EP, The Age of Anxiety listen here , recorded so far. I have to say, it's righteous front to back and there is not a scrap of fat on it. Fast, furious, frantic rock-n-roll straight through. They've taken all that made the [...]
Feral Children ::: photo by Josh Lovseth Lately I've tried my best to avoid listening to any musical acts that I've never heard of prior to watching them upon some random stage about town. I accidentally broke this rule when I heard Feral Children on KEXP a couple of weeks ago on my way to [...]
![Feral Children: Brand New Blood [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2290037_lg.jpg)
At the precise moment Feral Children launches into "On A Frozen Beach", the fifth track off their sophomore release Brand New Blood , the ferocious percussion kicks into gear. There's a key element here: the percussion is lent by front-man and standing percussionist Jeff Keenan as well as a second drummer on the trap set. First hearing the song, I noted that it sounded as though the wild, feral side of the band had been contained to a degree. And that concept is fully realized in Brand [...]
Feral Children at SXSW 2008 ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth Seattle band Feral Children have been pounding out spooky visions on local stages for a few years now, developing a percussion-heavy repertoire of dark indie rock that I've declared on more than on occasion is destined Pitchfork-dom sooner or later. The band's 2010 effort Brand New [...]

We are three weeks into the new year and some pretty amazing albums have already been released. This week the new Spoon is an absolute must get, but there are a few others that might surprise a few people. The new Eels album has E taking a look back on broken love, and the result is an absolutely heartbreaking but gorgeous album. This weeks new release list also plays host to a couple of former SDM " Bands to Watch " with the second album from Seattle's Feral Children and [...]

Feral Children - Inside the Night Feral Children are getting 2010 off to a good start. Their second album, Brand New Blood, is warm and well-produced (thank you, Scott Colburn ); their harmonies can pull you in without trying too hard (not an easy thing to do these days); the subject matter is often alluringly dark, while the songs themselves shift subtly, growing and flickering in a way that rewards patience. The album's best tracks can be heard over at their MySpace . [...]
