If you've had any contact with the UK northeast music scene in the past year or so you'll be familiar with Niall Greaves' work. For a period he regularly designed the posters for large free parties around the city; they were disconcerting and disturbing doodles that found majesty when presented in the public arena. It's easy to describe Greaves' illustrations as disturbing and that alone, but in reality they have a subtlety that much design work lacks. Nothing is heavy handed, his repeated uses of imagery and text creates a sprawling world, with each piece or [...]

By the feel of the temperatures outside, winter is coming fast. Supposed to be a great weekend. Halloween is upon us and that makes for some interesting shows. Not much going on as far a multiple city stops for bands, but there are a few highlights: The biggest band in the world, Coldplay is coming back through the area, playing DC Halloween night at the Verizon Center and Philly at Wachovia Center Saturday. Henry Rollins is out on a spoken word tour, sure to be [...]

Tonight in Baltimore don't miss Ghostly International's Mishna at the Hexagon . If you can't make that you might want to head down to DC to check out Born Ruffians, Plants and Animals, and Feral Kids at the Rock Roll Hotel. Up in Philly Mirah plays with No Kids at the First Unitarian Church while A Place To Bury Strangers plays Johnny Brenda's with Amazing Baby and The Cobbs. Finally up north Jay-Z performs at the Wachovia Spectrum with TI, T-Pain, and Keyshia Cole. Have a good one! mp3: Mirah - Sweepstakes [...]

I have fond memories of being a kid, sweating out humid summers in Baltimore, stuck to the vinyl seats in the back of my dad's beat up Chevette while listening to his favorite tape of Bruce Springsteen's Thunder Road on side A and The Beatle's Abbey Road on side B. Jump to another memory of us enjoying dinner while listening to the record player spin the Talking Heads or Elvis Costello. That music was so enjoyable...so singable... it made you forget that it was hot enough outside to melt plastic. The other day I [...]

Tonight in DC the Rock and Roll Hotel has Via Audio, Feral Kids, and The Dance Party while the Velvet Lounge has Hammer No More The Fingers, Caverns, The City Veins, and Solar Powered Sun Destroyer. While many of us are still recovering from our dual shows this past weekend, it is time to mention that we are throwing another one this week. On Friday night, we are sponsoring a show at Rock & Roll Hotel in DC. DC's The Dance Party will be joined by NYC's Via Audio . Brand new DC band, Feral Kids , will be opening the show and local favorites, Middle Distance Runner , will be returning from a long hiatus to DJ all night long. There may even be a surprise or two. [...]

So, there's a new look to SquirrelFood today. This change was not by choice though- the Wordpress update earlier this week broke my theme, and while trying to "hack" a workaround to some things, I broke it further. Now, I'm stuck with a half-assed theme that I'm not crazy about, but I'll try to make work. Hopefully, I'll find some time this weekend to either modfiy the these to my liking, or find one I do like. Either way, I hope all this rearrangement isn't too comfusing. I know a lot of readers are reading via RSS anyway, and the [...]
Great new band discoveries are the best, but they mean so much more when the band is located in your own backyard. I mean, isn't that why I started this site in the first place? In the beginning, these kind of discoveries happened to me on a regular basis. After a couple of years of doing this and thinking that I've already uncovered everything, it's even more special. I'd like to introduce you to a brand new DC band called Feral Kids . If you take one listen, you would swear that they have been at this [...]
