Ever wonder why so many emerging bands coming out of the gum trees down under lately? Well, for one, like Sweden, they get lots of community and governmental support to assist them in their formative stages. For example, The Seed Fund, founded by John Butler (John Butler Trio) and Danielle Caruana in 2005 and is more recently funded by the who's who of the Australian Music Industry was formed in the last 5 years to help emerging artists. The Seed aims to help Australian artists from any background, creating art and music across any genre, to establish [...]

Aussie songwriter Fergus Brown's melodic guitar-pop is reminiscent of The Shins, Bon Iver and Ben Kweller, but he is equally aligned with the lyrical peculiarities of artists such as Randy Newman, Jonathan Richman, and The Magnetic Fields. His debut record 'Burgers Frown' came out in 2009 and is a collection of sometimes quirky, sometimes tender, love songs. Musicians that helped contribute to his debut included producer Tony Dupé (Holly Throsby) and Paul Mac (silverchair), the artist Tim Derricourt (Dappled Cities) and Jack Ladder.

featuring Fergus Brown, The Wilderness of Manitoba and Dead Letter Chorus Although this year's Canadian Music Fest seemed somewhat more disorganized than usual, I was actually able to keep my personal schedule pretty much in tact, sticking relatively close to my original plans, with the exception of a couple of minor snafus on the Friday night. Even my mood was organized as I opted to go for the festival acoustic ease-in, and lead up to a rock 'n roll finale for Saturday night. (As anticipated, I was a little bit too brain-dead by the [...]

"We're nerds in love, we're one plus one. Playing magic cards from dusk til noon." Not a recent track, but a pretty one. Can't stop listening to the debut album from Sydney's Fergus Brown rather humorously titled Burgers Frown . It was released earlier this year and I'm going to put it out there: its gotta be one of the best Australian albums of 2009. Each of the ten tracks are almost painfully heartbreaking, but with lyrics such as these you just have to smile while you listen. [...]

Fergus Brown – John, She Was Never Only Dancing On reflection, the level of enjoyment I get from a sly pop culture reference is probably a little extreme but if you take some indie rock and add a subtle reference to basically anything else you've sealed the deal for me. My favourite part of Camera Obscura's 'Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken' was the reference to Lloyd Cole and the Commotions' '(Are You) Ready to Be Heartbroken?', and I get a kick every time I hear the bit in 'Popular Mechanics For Lovers' by [...]
Dorky McDorkenstein here, letting you know that I'll be spending the entire day immersed in the Halo 3 Beta. It's kind of a big deal to a few people around the world, so it was especially sweet when they announced a Sept. 25 release date for the third installment of the XBOX mega hit yesterday. The majority of you have probably rolled your eyes by this point in the post or are sincerely thinking about doing so by now, but at least that'll bring me up to my music based point in all of this.
