Today is beautiful with no breeze and the brightest sun hanging in the sky. Fern is so relaxed lying in the sun shining through the front door that I had to check to make sure she was breathing. Gracie is outside sitting in the sun. She has a favorite spot on the back side of the yard where she sprawls on the grass. When she comes in to check on me, her fur will feel hot to the touch. Yesterday I heard dogs barking, including my own, mowers and kids playing but not today. My neighborhood is Sunday [...]

The weather in this part of the world is pretty straightforward but never predictable, something that applies rather well to the new climate-themed album by Malaysian band Ferns . While their debut On Botany strove admirably for the laziest perfection, Fairweather Friends goes for a clearer distillation of their winsome dreampop sound. Yet, it's not so much about a more polished studio production, but the band's intent at taking their music beyond just that sound. And as with the weather, surprises are aplenty especially with frontman Warren Chan's whispery vocals vacillating between newfound confidence and [...]
When I woke up the first time, I could hear the rain. I decided it was too early to get up so I turned over and went back to sleep. When I woke up the second and final time, large, wet flakes were falling, and there was a slight cover of snow on the ground. Since then, the rain has returned. For tonight a wind advisory has been issued. The number of changes in just one day's weather are amazing. The Cape Times mentioned North Atlantic right whales are back in the bay far earlier than expected. It [...]
Arrah & the Ferns are digitally releasing a new 6-song EP entitled Soldier Ghost . The band has gone through many changes since their humble beginnings in Muncie, Indiana (HUDSUCKER PROXY!), but what has remained constant are their infectiously fun, upbeat tunes and the truly charming vocals of the former Midwestern Christian turned Philly agnostic songstress, Ms. Arrah Fisher. And though she was welcomed to our City of Brotherly Love with a mugging at gunpoint, her songwriting still remains hopeful. Arrah & the Ferns will be celebrating their release tonight at PhilaMOCA with other Deli faves Univox [...]
Photo by Daniel Muller Arrah And The Ferns are known for their cute, poppy folk. Wurlitzers, teasing girl-boy vocals, and silly lyrics about pre-teen problems abound. But, after taking a break in 2008 (during which they lost the rights to their name) and the band's subsequent move to Philadelphia, Arrah And The Ferns are working on new material that is darker, more guitar-driven, and less acoustic than their two previous albums. (They plan to release a live recording sometime this summer.) Prior to the band's show at the Sundrop Arts And Music Festival [...]
Will sits down with Zach to talk about his new film, his life, and monkeys fellating themselves with frogs. Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis: Will Ferrell from Will Ferrell

Zach Galifianakis released his latest episode of the awkward and hilarious series Between Two Ferns . His guest this time around is Will Ferrell . These two are a couple of the funniest cats in Hollywood so it's a perfect fit to get them together. "Get the fat out of your ears" and head over to Funny Or Die to watch the latest episode. Galifianakis is having a pretty big day, I guess. A new Ferns episode and the release of The Hangover Part Two [...]
Speaking of Galifianakis, this new installment of "Between Two Ferns" with Will Ferrell (and a special surprise guest!) had me rolling.

BASTARD is from East L.A.—born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley. They are a force to be reckoned—deflecting bullets with the power of rock. The sound is a mix of influences from kids who stayed true to their punk and metal roots, reminiscent of early Motorhead with a little bit of the Stooges mixed in. This interview by Taeil Kim.

Now that his painting "Hammered Head" (above) is building-size downtown (corner of Spring and Third), local artist Jeff Fernengel is having an art show this Saturday to present a new collection of wacky yet endearing paintings to the masses. Expect loads of color, shape-shifting animals with personality, and maybe a spare PBR can here or there. The show is being held at the Art Exchange, 17 E. Brickel St., in the heart of the Short North. This free event runs from 7-11pm, and includes free beverages and a performance from Columbus' Super Desserts [...]

Paul Searls is a professor of history at UVM, author of the book Two Vermonts , the former faculty adviser to WRUV and the possessor of one of the best collections of indie music in the Green Mountains...which he appears to be properly passing along to his kids. I first knew Paul in the mid-90's when we were both members of the Pavement mailing list. Do you remember the heady days of mailing lists? They were quaint microcosms of the blogosphere except that we burned through cases of Maxell [...]

Ferns On Botany Fruit Records (2007) 8.2 While another indie pop band using sunshine, lollypop, summer, picnic day while Ferns using botany theme and gardening stuff. A nice theme on this global warming era, we don't need an eternal summer with lollypop, we need more plant and tree. A whisper voice from mr.Chang vocal all over the records give them a warm and relaxing feeling, with a soft tunes of guitars that didn't bother trying to ruin your resting time. This is a indie pop album, but when i [...]

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is definitely one of the last places one would expect to find good pop music, but hey, I'll go with it. That's where Ferns, a five-piece indie pop/power pop/whatever pop group, are from. Their debut album, On Botany, is definitely one of the best unrecognized releases I've ...
Silly title I know, but the band Ferns comes from the very unheard of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Their MySpace page scares me with greeness that even Kermit the Frog would throw up about, BUT their music isn't bad at all. Skeptical at first glance, but when "This Sweet Refrain" began playing I realized hey these people who think berry plants as a background somehow represent their Fern band...well gee..they really aren't that bad. I feel that the music has far more potential than the vocals at this stage, but every beginning is rocky. And I really [...]

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is definitely one of the last places one would expect to find good pop music, but hey, I'll go with it. That's where Ferns, a five-piece indie pop/power pop/whatever pop group, are from. Their debut album, On Botany , is definitely one of the best unrecognized releases I've heard so far this year; so much so that I'd call it a sleeper hit for anyone that really digs pop music. Lead singer Warren Chan's hushed and harsh voice is at the front of the music, sounding so delicate that it needs to be [...]
