Now, while your phones may not be constantly ringing with blasts from Gossip Girl covering the latest news regarding Serena (Blake Lively), Blair (Leighton Meester), and their slew of family and friends' privileged lives (flawlessly balanced between turmoil and perfection), the phenomenal soundtrack is sure to stay ringing in your ears. From the drugs and partying to the twisted relationships full of lies, deceit, and love, CW's Gossip Girl has found the ideal tracks to set the backdrop and atmosphere for the fast-pasted, [...]
If it's December, then you know it's Mixmas time at You Ain't No Picasso! Each year I get a bunch of my favorite bands to contribute themed mixes and share their thoughts about each of the tracks. MP3: Vandaveer - Concerning Past and Future Conquests Vandaveer is quietly raising the bar of classiness on folk [...]

The blogs are buzzing with yesterday's announcement, via a terse yet sincere statement on their website , that Athens, GA hometown heroes R.E.M. are calling it quits after three decades on the road, the radio, and the cultural consciousness. We first covered the genre-defining band back in 2009, so rather than rehash their path from college radio to iconic mainstream success, we're taking the opportunity to revisit that older post today in memoriam - with a couple of bonus covers of Losing My Religion , from more recent CLD faves Amber Rubarth [...]

The eclectic expanse known as Zorthian Ranch truly became a haven for the folk on Saturday as four stages were set up just north of Pasadena for a day of music, food, and beautiful scenery. Nature's backdrop wonderfully suited the 2nd New L.A. Folk Festival , where artists such as Olentangy John, Jenny Luna, Ferraby Lionheart, Amanda Jo Williams, Frank Fairfield and more brought out their acoustic guitars, banjos and upright basses to play Americana, folk and rock songs that floated throughout the dirt roads and deep terraces. Despite the hot weather, cool tunes seemed to guide the day [...]
The 2nd New Los Angeles Folk Fest goes off Saturday in a strange, wonderful and probably overheated place known as Zorthian Ranch in Altadena. To give you a taste of the event's deliriously eclectic lineup — the music ranges from old-timey, the fractured folk to psychedelia, with a lot in between — this edition of our Buzzsicle mixtapes is devoted to 10 of the artists playing Saturday. Enjoy. ||| Download: Buzzsicle 15 ||| Also: After the jump, the tracklist, [...]

After taking some time off from performing, the Low Branches are back with another show and this time it's with stellar DC artist Vandaveer . Coming along with them will be a fantastic addition to the bill, Ferraby Lionheart . This unique show will take place Thursday, May 19 at the newly renovated Sound of Music Recording Studios, which I am eagerly looking to seeing. If you pick up or are given a show flyer around town (and they are everywhere, just [...]

Tonight in Cambridge at T.T. the Bear's two indie folk bands that I adore, Vandaveer and Ferraby Lionheart , are playing. Even though that obnoxious bass will be seeping through the floorboards from the club below TTs, I think both bands will be more than capable of putting on a fantastic show. It happens to be the first show of Vandaveer's tour as well, and first shows are always a little extra exciting to see. Watch a video for my favorite song of Ferraby Lionheart's, "Pocketknife" here . [...]

Ferraby Lionheart released his album Jack of Hearts back in 2010 so it's about time we got another video from this sweet and heartfelt record. Lionheart delivers a very dreamy little video of a man in a Mr. Roger's sweater traversing a lovely landscape filled with golden wheat, dark tunnels, and the Oregon coastline. This one might be a little over my head but I think he might fall asleep and wake up a Civil War soldier battling trees with faces? Either way, "Pocketknife" is a fun bouncy song and this seems to be a [...]
Ferraby Lionheart has released a new video for the song " Pocketknife ," from his 2010 release The Jack of Hearts . The video was shot in the beautiful landscape of Hood River, Oregon by friend Manny Marquez . Lionheart describes the video for " Pocketknife "... "[I] was wanting a different kind of backdrop. I feel like the song expresses a desperate beauty and realness; so we wanted to capture a very natural setting. I have an affinity for cinema like Days [...]

For your fantastic Friday: ► Singer-songwriter Henry Wolfe , the son of Meryl Streep who's been praised for his smart, sticky tunes, celebrates the release of his album "Linda Vista" at the Hotel Cafe. Ferraby Lionheart and Charlie Wadhams make it a value-added stop. ► New Zealand's electro-pop whiz kids the Naked and Famous play a sold-out show on the first of two nights at the Echoplex. ► Swahili Blonde , the Nicole Turley project that's busy making new music to follow up last year's debut [...]
Lionheart knows simply sweet songs about love and heartbreak - if you haven't heard his Daytrotter session then you're missing out.
Top shows to consider while setting aside time this morning for Warpaint's appearance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic: ► Literature and music collide at a charity event at the Bootleg Theater — Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro will perform, and author Mark Z. Danielewski will read from his 2006 novel "Only Revolutions," which inspired the trio's album of the same name. A Q&A session and a signing will follow, all proceeds benefiting L.A.-based Homeboy Industries , an organization that helps at-risk youth and former gang members. Presented by SPIN magazine and Skylight [...]
Top 5 shows for a busy midweek: ► British dance-rock trio Friendly Fires , last spotted here in 2009 flexing their muscles behind their Mercury Prize-nominated debut, return for a show at the Roxy to debut songs off their forthcoming sophomore album. Superhumanoids open. ► Great L.A. songwriter night at the Satellite, where Ferraby Lionheart (Remember "Jack of Hearts?" We do) is joined by Obi Best , Willoughby and Rob Kolar (of Lemon Sun/He's My Brother, She's My Sister). ► [...]

With such a great year for music, choosing my top 10 albums of the year was a challenge. Suffice it to say, this list of my 10 favorites only grazes the surface of what 2010 had to offer, and after determining my final list, even I was a little surprised at the outcome (for example, I thought for sure the Drums would be on there somewhere, not to mention Caribou and the Moondoggies and … well, they didn't make the list, so I'll move on). Here's what did make it on, and why they deserve it: [...]

I have a "love/hate" relationship with top ten lists. See, I love lists. But I hate the fact that "Year End Lists" are not only expected but also, for the most part, just a simple regurgitation of the same albums, blog after blog. And, what can I say? I'm kind of a snot. When something's expected, my first inclination is to rebel against it. Of course, were RFC to not toss up a single "Best Of" list, it wouldn't seem as though we were rebels, but rather that we were lazy. And my staff and I are no slouches! So, [...]
