branching out from the norm is good. keeps things interesting. i'm going to try to make a habit out of occasionally posting something outside of the typical down-tempo acoustic folk type of music that i generally seek. just because i don't usually listen to something doesn't mean it's not good, and more importantly, it certainly doesn't mean that you won't love it. i know a number of people here in chicago that will probably dig milwaukee's indie-popping fever marlene (scott starr and kevin dunphy). KF (friend of the band) sent me a link to check out one of their tracks and [...]

Well, that's not exactly true. The contrast podcast theme this week (courtesy of James! ) is "A place I've never been to." That narrows it down a bit! Narrows it down for some people, but not for me. I've never been to a lot of places, as I am not what you'd call well-traveled. The list of songs I had to choose from was long indeed. (To listen to the entire podcast, you can [...]

My Favorite - 17 Berlin [box] [...]

Formerly of Vancouver, now based in London, UK, IAMXL is teaming up with Milwaukee, Wisconsin's Fever Marlene to create a harmonious vocal edit of Faxing Berlin from Deadmau5 . Come closer and take a deep breath of this very fetching piece of sound. Berlin can be as uncomfortable and raw as a fucking sombre forest. But on the other hand Berlin also can caress you as gently as a balmy breeze. And this track is exactly such like a balmy breeze. Come closer and take a deep breath. [...]
It is definitely Autumn. The weather is getting a bit cooler, kids are back in school and bands are out on their fall tours. It's the last hurrah down the beach. The Dewey Beach Music Conference starts tonight and runs through Saturday. With over 100 bands from all over the country at 7 different venues, it is sure to have something for everyone. The best part is all nighttime shows are absolutely free! Local acts playing that we have covered are Philly favs [...]

Yea I love Star Wars, get over it! We got a new mix for you with a handful of dope stuffs. 16 tracks from artists you MIGHT HAVE NEVER heard of randing from electronic to indie rocky. Check'em and feed your iPods. Momu - Window Girl In A Coma - Their Cell State Bird - I Don't Love You Anymore Jeff Hanson - Night Fever Marlene - When Daniel Goodings Made It Rain [...]

I love the process of making a mixtape. The picking of a theme, the researching tracks, the hunting down songs, putting all the songs together, making sure it's just right before you finalize it and give to its intended recipient. If I could be paid for making mixtapes, I could die a happy man. On my last assignment , I decided to talk about the process and art form of a mixtape. I talk about how it brings all sorts of creativity to the surface from creating a theme to compiling the right songs to even making [...]
I discovered these guys by accident, but boy am I glad I did! Their sound is a mix of the Strokes, Vampire Weekend and the like, and though I for some reason feel like I've heard it all before, I can't help but really like this band and their songs. The Virgins '07 EP (buy via their myspace) Rich Girls [...]

White China? How about Yellow America? We're taking over and you can't stop us! Anyway I think the title is more about the phrase "china white" referring to pure heroin. Before I begin writing, this may be a subpar interview as I had to alter the schedule a bit and while I really wanted an extra week or two to get acquainted with this album, I think I'll be able to get down the core of it. I first got a chance to look at Fever Marlene 's Self Titled release. While it was a [...]

Milwaukee's Fever Marlene return with White China . In January, the band spent 5 days at New York's Chelsea Hotel and released the new disc in March. On this album, the band has expanded on their familiar pop sound, Having been a fan of last year's Civil War , I would have to say that this release feels scaled down, yet significantly richer. Lemon King Mahoney

With the resurrected body of Jeff Buckley and John Lennon in tow with Michael Stipe, Thom Yorke, Bono and members from Arcade Fire, The Smiths and The Stone Roses, the bearded duo called Fever Marlene decided that the time is now right for their publicist to make that all important statement. "They are better than The Beatles." Hey wait a minute, isn't John also in the band now? "Yeah, even he agrees that this band is better than THAT band." Oh, right. 1) White China [...]
It was only nine months ago that I was singing the praise of Fever Marlene's debut release Civil War, and now they give us White China . Recorded during a four night stay at The Chelsea Hotel in New York, this album pushes beyond its predecessor both sonically and lyrically. This is an intimate look at the soul of Scott Starr, accompanied by minimal equipment (which consisted of a single Universal Audio 610 Mic Pre-amp, an AKG 414 microphone, a mac lap top running Logic Pro, an acoustic and bass guitar, [...]

White China - Fever Marlene More quick hits. This time it's a very quick little track, less than two minutes, beautiful and sparse. It's got a wispy, sentimental feel - like a quiet summer evening spent on a porch, reminiscing about past loves. Fever Marlene are also great because, as far as I can tell, they have all their music available for free online. Check out the rest of the album here .

Just when you thought that there couldn't possibly be any more indie/pop/electro duos capable of creating a beautifully haunting album here comes the Fever Marlene. A two piece band that hails from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their expansive electro-rock styling calls to mind the carefully internationally aware pop songs of Jens Lekman and the raw balladic power of the Flaming Lips. of course the emotive beats and blips of the Postal service. Definitely one to watch. Fever Marlene - My Heart (Its Harder Than a Stone) Fever Marlene - Oh Berlin [...]

New Wax David Hasselhoff is big in Germany. Indie-popsters Fever Marlene are big in their hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Building off the buzz of last year's Civil War , which was released on Rev Pop Records, the band is back with the more subdued White China . So what does a band do to follow up the retro-flavored electro-indie-popness of their debut... duh, they pack up all their shit, leave town, and head to New York's storied Chelsea Hotel to spend 4 nights weaving a more [...]
We would like to introduce you to Fever Marlene . When we kicked back, threw on the headphones, and listened to this artist we thought "Filling the soundtrack of life, focused on the days when knees don't ache, responsibility is nil, and hopping at a show is innate." What did you think? Use a tag or comment to share your thoughts with everyone. Enjoy. Genre: Rock-Pop-Folk Label: Rev Pop Industries [...]

One of my favorite bands we've posted about in the past, Milwaukee's Fever Marlene, will be releasing their next full album in March. White China was recorded in 5 days at the Chelsea Hotel in New York, and is an album full of delicate songs and melody rich compositions - a huge contrast from their previous bombastic pop giant, Civil War (named album of the year by 88.9 Radio Milwaukee and received numerous nominations for being one of the top 10 albums of the year). Scott Starr & Kevin Dunphy make up the band, which was the first [...]

The Chelsea Hotel in New York City (made famous by Leonard Cohen) hosted Fever Marlene for 4 nights and 5 days, which resulted in the band's second album, due for release in March. They sound like a new Britpop sensation, although they're from Milwaukee. Earlier reviews (of their debut album Civil war ) compared them to Oasis, Death Cab For Cutie and Arcade Fire. The release party for the album [...]
