Last night Marc Hogan and I went to see Field Music and Menomena play a show at the Bowery Ballroom. This morning, we had a little chat about the gig. Field Music are one of the most polished indie bands working indie's decidedly unpolished halls. Sounding like a smaller, but up-to-date, Supertramp, the Sunderland, UK outfit blend surprising twists and turns into little nuggets that would be radio hits in a perfect world. From their latest release Tones Of Town ... closer at hand [mp3] From their 2005 s/t debut... you're so pretty [mp3] shorter shorter [mp3] [...]

Monday musing. Ever had that question, what would people in the future listen to? Or related to that question, what would be the logical sound if people thirty years ago were asked to imagined what music in 2006 would sound like. Well, here is a little amusing Monday list. 2006 indie with 70's flavor. Thanks to random search at bubblegum machine and SXSW 2007. I would say this very much sounds like a sountrack of a retro TV show. Huge throaty woman singer or whispery male voice, bluesy and heavily influenced by jazz with more muted rock. [...]

It was a battle of the 3 peice on Friday night at the El Mocambo ..Which kinda shocked me..I didn`t know that all the bands only had 3 members. First it was Field Music who played a ton of songs of their new album " Tones Of Towns ". I really enjoyed how the 2 brothers switched back and forth between drums, guitar, bass and singing duties! Next up was Land Of Talk , another 3 peice from Montreal . They also put on an impressive set, [...]

1. American Analog Set - Choir Vandals - If this were a 2007 release instead of 2001, I'd have sworn it was a collaboration between Sufjan Stevens and Pinback. It's delicate and breathy, a really nice clean electric guitar riff played over plodding brushed snare hits. [from Know By Heart | buy ] 2. Field Music - You're So Pretty... - The chorus in this one brings to mind a lot of really great stuff and is catchy as hell. Maybe if the Beatles and The Beach [...]

I've been enjoying the country-punk of The Mules these last few weeks... and in particular the opening track of their debut album 'Save Your Face' (out next Monday). 'Polly-O' comes across like a spiky gypsified version of 'Feel Good Hit of the Summer' by Queens of the Stone Age. The Pixies gone country. Or something. A slightly disturbing tale of valium addiction, dead bodies and dogs,

I'm going to be on UNCLE LD's HIGH BIAS PODCAST on the VILLAGE VOICE website this week & I could not be more excited! Notorious writer/musician/chollo LD Beghtol asked me to come down to the Village Voice offices on Sunday & I have to admit that it was kind of a dorky Colleen-in-NYC-Dream-Come-True - Memoir-Moment (TM) ! I playfully bitch-slapped Michael Musto's Desk (cause I've loved him for forever) & humped the chair of Tricia Romano (for [...]

SXSW plans: The whole big BIGSTEREO family arrives in Austin on Tuesday. Please give us a shout for our telephone numbers if you wanna hang out, dance mad, be crazy. Rchrd Oh?! is dj'ing at NOON on Friday, March 16th at Factory People . Come out and show yourself and buy some new clothes and listen to some hot music. I'll be spending most of my weekend packing and planning a SXSW schedule that will probably fall apart after being in Austin for a few hours. Before getting my nerd on by creating color-coded cross-referenced band lists in Excel (what? although I'm not very organized in many aspects when it comes to trips I like to have an itinerary so I get my money's worth), here's Field Music, a UK pop band that will be playing the Beauty Bar Patio on Saturday, March 17 at 9 pm and also at several day shows. I was interested in this [...]
This week's unintentional theme seems to be good songs off bad albums. Being an album person rather than a song person, I tend to use bands I like in general and then feature one of their songs here. However a few of the songs in today's episode I really don't like the album they're off. Also this week I've delved back into the unknown a bit. Whereas the last couple of weeks I've been name dropping from my back-catalogue, this week features songs that haven't yet passed the test of time. So don't complain if you don't like them. My [...]

"Sit Tight" Smart pop: when the chord changes are clever and the lyrics unusually witty; when the music manages to traverse genre boundaries within milliseconds; when the time signatures seem to have A.D.D. Field Music make smart pop. Hailing from Sunderland , England and sharing Maximo Park 's drummer, Field Music are indie rock's best kept secret. "Sit Tight" from their second album, Tones of Town , [...]
There are three bands I like and each has the word "Field" in their name. They are , and . Two of them, Field Music and Fields, are from England. It gets complicated when you do a search on them. Aside from the similar names, they are actually very...
