By Alistair Seaton May 20, 2013. These days a backstory seems to be obligatory for any debut album expecting to receive attention, and in this sense Field Report doesn't disappoint. It is a vehicle for Christopher Porterfield (of which Field Report is an anagram of his surname), a former member of DeYarmond Edison , the band that also used to provide a home for Justin Vernon ( Bon Iver ) and future members of Megafaun , Phil and Brad Cook. Given this pedigree, his self-titled debut sounds much as you might expect: folky, [...]

If you haven't been listening to Milwaukee's Field Report by now, here's your chance to make it up with no hard feelings from me (but do it quick). There are only a handful of musicians and bands that I nebulously define as having "that Folkadelphia sound," meaning that our radio show was created to support and share music exactly like this, like Field Report is making. These "Folkadelphia sounding" bands bridge the gaps not only between various folk music traditions, past and present, but also between other genres, technologies, and artistic disciplines. The end result is an inventive [...]

Frank Yang 2010 wasn't really that long ago, but apparently it was long enough that I'd just about forgotten about Oxford, England's Stornoway despite their debut Beachcomber's Windowsill making it onto my year-end list , helped along by a stellar local live debut that December at the El Mocambo. Which is not to say that I had forgotten them completely or that I liked them, but by the time their follow-up album Tales From Terra Firma came out in mid-March, they'd [...]

Field Report and HearYa - a match made in indie-folk heaven? I definitely think this now. The Milwaukee boys turned up in Chicago in a blizzard and heartily performed 4 tracks. These 4 songs are now available for immersing yourself inside...completely. The latest album from Field Report is a square kick in the gut of an album and it continues to impress with the additional sessions the band is performing lately. The songs are growing, flexing, gaining additional character (if possible). I like that as a band, Field Report are performing their songs in almost original form each time you [...]

As the snow began to fall on a March morning, I wondered if this session was even going to happen. Luckily, Field Report, aware of the impending blizzard in Chicago, left Milwaukee early to beat the weather. This would be my first session since relocating SHIRK studios to its new location. The wiring and equipment had barely been tested and to say I was nervous would be an understatement. The band’s early arrival gave us some extra setup time and by the time I was ready to hit record, everything was sounding and behaving like I thought it should. The [...]

What would it be like to see a band that truly defines a particular genre? Imagine the possibilities: dodging spitballs and projectile beer at some bowling alley in Memphis during the Pistols’ North American tour; sweating it out in a Queensbridge park watching Marley Marl work the turntables while insulting BDP’s Bronx lineage at every opportunity; maybe being fortunate enough to have caught Dylan go shockingly electric at the Newport folk festival back in 1965. Heady stuff, no? Having the privilege to stand among the adoring faithful when The Specials reunion tour rolled through Pomona late last [...]

The winter had overstayed its welcome in Eastern Iowa this year and with the frost finally succeeding and the bulbs pushing their greens up in anticipation of flowering, we can finally (hopefully) start looking forward to Spring and Summer and to the recent announcement by Codfish Hollow of the first show in the barn this year! Last year we saw two really amazing events in the Codfish Hollow Barn stage even without an official Daytrotter Barnstormer show. July 4th brought a mind-melting and body-dehydrating appearance by Counting Crows and their touring Outlaw Roadshow lineup for what [...]

Delicate Steve @ Subterranean From Chicago to Columbus to Austin, FP saw a lot of awesome shows in March. Today we continue our live music roundup for the month that was supposed to be warm but wasn't -except for the week we spent in the land of free beer and barbecue. Field Report's Chris Porterfield performing live BY JORDAN MAINZER The third guy’s a charm. That is, Field Report’s Chris Porterfield is the third and latest spin off from retrospectively super indie supergroup DeYarmond Edison, the early 2000s band that also included Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and the members of Megafaun. Porterfield’s surname-anagram band released their excellent self-titled debut last year and played most of it on the night of March 5th at Evanston SPACE. A six-piece band, Field Report transformed the intimate sounds of their debut to the bourgeois suburban venue [...]
Annachristie Sadler brings her new project Murchant to Puck Live in Doylestown tonight. Formerly one third of local folk collaborators Sisters 3, Sadler's musical history includes backing up Hoots & Hellmouth and Hezekiah Jones, as well as recording a handful of full-lengths with her sibling bandmates. With Murchant, though, Sadler takes a turn from the ... Continue reading
Alright, I know this seems like a cop out. You may already be asking yourself, "Wait, didn't this band break up in 2006?". The answer to that question, my friends, would be yes, they did. These musicians created songs of simple beauty that are often overlooked due to the later successes of each individual artist. This is why I am taking the time to give public appreciation to an unsigned band of the past, a ghost in our musical memories that deserves more than a lingering itch of what could have been. DeYarmond Edison, a [...]

While most of the music business were readying themselves for the musical, physical, and emotional onslaught of South by Southwest, a brave few got the party started early at Savannah Stopover . Already in its third year, the festival, as its name might indicate, "capitalizes on the logistical good fortune of Savannah, Georgia’s proximity to interstates 95 and 10 by presenting traveling musicians with a welcoming place to play en route to Austin's annual SXSW." In a way, Stopover definitely serves the role as a warm up for many bands. Established acts like Thurston Moore can test-run [...]
Sometimes this city just boggles my mind. I mean, I'm at shows all the time, but a night like tonight is one of those nights that truly makes me love it here. I mean, where else can you see early sets from Andrew Bird & Caitlin Rose in-store for free, and then follow that up [...]
