Playlist: Label Love Words: Saam Das You'll have heard the news of the destruction of the Sony DADC distribution centre in Enfield by now - we wanted to help support the independent music labels who have lost most of their stock as a result of the rioters in London. (Independent DVD companies have also been affected - see how you can help here .) Below is a 30 minute playlist covering some of our recommendations of tracks/albums that you can purchase to support [...]

Oxegen 2011 – Sunday: The Rubberbandits, The Saturdays, Fight Like Apes

The Rubberbandits, Main Stage What's a Sunday morning without a good strong dose o' mass? As the campers crawl out from under their hangovers to face day three of the gauntlet and mingle with the very fresh-looking day trippers arriving in their droves off the buses, The Rubberbandits are in their element on the Main Stage providing revellers with their own unique brand of religious experience. Backed by a team of gyrating altar-boys and a supporting cast including Judas Iscariot and God himself, Blindboy Boat Club & Mr. Chrome put on an extremely well worked out show which [...]

Glastonbury Retrospective - Sunny Saturday (Part 1)

Glastonbury Retrospective - Sunny Saturday (Part 1) Day two of the Devil's picture perfect retrospective of the Glastonbury bands, acts and artists that caught my attention. The High Wire 25th June 2011 BBC Introducing Stage First band of the day were The High Wire (first featured on the Devil's blog back in February Video Killed The Radio Star ) who somehow made being knee deep in mud a pleasurable experience. [Festival Season] Glastonbury

[Festival Season] Glastonbury Despite the somewhat rebellious weather, Glastonbury pulled off another great year of live music and contemporary arts. As many can appreciate, the sheer size of the event makes it difficult to really review, so I feel it's best just to suggest some of the weekend's highlights. Despite the site coming alive from Wednesday evening, the real music begins on Friday morning. We headed straight to the Pyramid stage and caught a surprisingly engaging set from London electro band Metronomy . I was stunned that the organisers decided to put the band on the main stage, as I [...]

Amhrán Gach Lá - Funeral Suits

Amhrán Gach Lá - Funeral Suits I'll always enthusiastically write about bands aiming to bring their music to a wider audience and I'm delighted that one of our best alternative bands Funeral Suits is on the Wireless bill in Hyde Park this weekend with fellow Irish bands Fight Like Apes and Cashier No. 9: Check out the impressive single 'Colour Fade' here: FUNERAL SUITS-Colour Fade by Brassneckman [...]

My Glastonbury Review

My Glastonbury Review My Glastonbury story began with an impromptu email fired off to the Emerging Talent Competition asking if they needed another blogger as a judge for this year's competition. I got a ticket in exchange for listening to at least one track from 159 bands. Within that 159 bands I can say I've become a fan of The Little Unsaid, Laurie Cameron, Elliott Morris and Klak Tik. The eventual winners of this year's ETC was Treetop Flyers : Treetop Flyers- Long [...]

Snow Patrol - Run Live At Glastonbury
As I was a judge on the Glastonbury Emerging Talent contest I am privileged to have a pass for this weekend's Glastonbury festival. Some of the bands I'm hoping to catch include Fight Like Apes, James Vincent McMorrow, Imelda May, U2, Paul Simon, The Twilight Singers, Morrissey, Deacon Blue as well as The Wombles! I have a few posts scheduled for the weekend so there's still going to be posts to check out. Here's a few videos from Irish artists in the past at Glastonbury! From 1995 here's Ash performing [...]

Latitude Interview // Fight Like Apes // Sunrise Arena

Fight Like Apes – Sunrise Arena - James, Dublin. 1 - Who is your 'must see' performance at Latitude this year? I don't think any of us could ever miss a British Sea Power performance at a festival we're at. Incredible band. We also love Saul Williams. Dan... Read more..

Fight Like Apes – O2 Academy, Bristol

Fight Like Apes – O2 Academy, Bristol 9 May, 2011 The early comers line up at the barrier whilst the rest mill at the bar. The first beer has already been spilt. It's going to be a good night. The second room at the Bristol branch of O22s venues is a strange one - it's long and it's thin with a rather deep stage. You can just about see the drum kit at the back! The Great Escape: 2011 Festival Preview [Thursday]

Charli XCX - Stay Away
Words: Saam Das Back in 2006, not long after this blog started, I ventured down to Brighton for the first ever Great Escape festival . With over 100 bands appearing over three days, I caught acts like The Spinto Band , The Young Knives and Tapes n Tapes all in relatively tiny venues. Now, the festival's much bigger and I'm heading back. One of the biggest problems of the [...]

Amhrán Gach Lá - Gemma Hayes

Today's the day when the full Top 50 current Irish artists list is complete. There's lots of great Irish artists I've excluded from my list due to not releasing any material in the last year and a bit. Artists such as The Frames, Lisa Hannigan and Junah, as well as artists that don't do it for me like Bell X1, Fight Like Apes and there's a fairly decent question mark over Declan O'Rourke! One artist I'd have loved to include is Gemma Hayes who is on the verge of releasing a new album. As Friday is [...]

Album Review: Fight Like Apes – The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner

Album Review: Fight Like Apes – The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner I am always troubled when "alt-rock" is used to describe a band. I mean, what exactly is the difference between "rock" and "alt-rock", is "alt-rock" when "traditional" rock goes mental? If yes, I suppose "alt-rock" works as a label for synth-based Fight Like Apes from Dublin. In 2009 I heard their songs 'Tie Me Up with Jackets', with singer MayKay's sing/talky voice, its bleepy blips and anarchic, shouted chorus. Their second album 'The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner' was released in Ireland in 2010 but finally [...]

The Interview: Fight Like Apes

Fight Like Apes - Hoo Ha Henry
Fight Like Apes rock a sound that can't exactly be defined by modern genres. Maybe it's punk, maybe it's electro-pop, maybe it's indie rock - as soon as you find yourself settling on a buzzword, the next song comes along and blows the label clean off. The only thing for certain is Fight Likes Apes have a lot of energy, a lot of talent, and they kick a lot of ass. The threesome have earned a bit of a reputation for their strangely rambling and B movie inspired record titles, like 2007's EPs How [...]

MP3(s) of the Day #310: Fight Like Apes

Dublin punk poppers Fight Like Apes will be releasing a new album, 'The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner', on 25 April, and before that, a single titled 'Jenny Kelly' on 4 April. In celebration of their upcoming releases (and fortuitously, we're posting this on St. Patrick's Day!), the band are offering up for listening and/or downloading three tracks they recently recorded live at a in-store at Tower Records Dublin. They are 'Hoo Ha Henry', 'Poached Eggs', and 'Come On, Let's Talk About Our Feelings', and they're all [...]
