MayKay, Fight Like Apes, Sunday, Oxegen 08 by James Goulden Having flirted with Irish music over the weekend, Sunday is the day when the big four of the new breed look to make their mark, dotted across the various stages. First up on the main stage are THE BLIZZARDS . It's a position that suits them well, providers as they are of power pop for the masses. Throw in a brass section and some bright sunshine (and the two always seem to go together) and while it may not be for the purist, its fine [...]

So after all the talk and the hoo-hah and the scumbags and the line-up announcements and the pictures of burning tents and the hating and the rain and the mud and more talk and hoo-hah, Oxegen has rolled around again, boasting what is probably the best line-up of all European festivals. Those of you who have been there before and have been to any other festival other than it too can attest that as far as things-to-do is concerned Oxegen is severely lacking but nobody can argue with the quality line-up showcasing some of the best that music is offering [...]

We go nice and early because it's supposed to have a 10pm curfew but this turns out to be incorrect information. So we're in plenty of time to catch all three bands. They are a three piece called The Sugars. To me, they look and sound like a harder version of the Raveonettes. They also have quite an American sound, although they are actually from Leeds. As their set runs out of time they enquire as to whether they've got time for one more. In the end they cheekily slot in two back to back. Not bad. [...]

I know I rarely post straightforward album reviews, but I was writing this for print anyway, and it's a great great little EP. So why not? Yes, Fight Like Apes' new EP is called David Carradine Is A Bounty Hunter Whose Robotic Arm Hates Your Crotch and yes, the music does live up to such a mighty title. If you loved their equally wonderfully-titled debut EP* you'll be happy to know that all the highlights out in force there - singalong melodies set to bizarrely resonant lyrics, moments of pure beautiful noise that [...]

Aoife Mc - radio presenter and podcast enthusiast had Fight Like Apes in the studio for The Indie Hour on Anna Livia FM last week. It's a good interview where we learn that the threatening lyrics for "Lend Me your Face" were largely written from a male perspective, that the real Jake Summers has been in touch with May Kay and that the Apes are making roast chicken for dinner amongst other things. You can also here some tracks from the Fight Like Apes EP [...]
The States have had their Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the English their Arctic Monkeys so isn't it about time the emerald one had its very own blogger endorsed sensation. So far Fight Like Apes have received quite a bit of bandwidth from assorted green-backed sources (hurry along there Matt!) so I better join the fray. They are signed to the Frank & Walters label Fifa Records (how did they get

I want to do a quick post on some music and blogs I've seen over the last few weeks that deserve some attention if you haven't seen them yet. All the Irish bloggers are going NUTS for Fight like Apes and their song "Lend me your Face" and rightly so from what I've heard so far. Una , Phil , Donal , Shane and Bobby have been enthusing about them of late. Looking forward to seeing them live and hearing their fantastically-titled EP How Am I Supposed To [...]

Fight Like Apes - Lend Me Your Face Somehow, this song makes violence sound like something not to be afraid of. It seems like a means of expression just like music - just as vital and worthy as music, or love or whatever it may be. This song is music, and it is violence, and it is great as both of them, with careening vocals like Karen O stealing James Browns' strut, and yet approachably human. Maybe this song's got split personalities. Those distorted, flowing keyboards, they sound both beautiful and continous as an evening [...]

Fight Like Apes It's a good idea these days to simianify your name. Arctic Monkeys, Fight Like Apes, eh, Gorilla Vs Bear? Ok. Anyway, Fight Like Apes are one of my favourite Irish bands, and in true fan fashion, I'm tipping them for the top, or at the very least, I'm telling you that their music is awesome. It's fun, rocking, a bit Brooklyn, loud, messily drunk, DIY, punky, electronic, joyful, gooey, GOOD. Edel Coffey has been playing 'Lend Me Your Face' on her Phantom show for a while, and they have [...]

FIGHT LIKE APES Female fans of Fight Like Apes everywhere have long been commending lead singer May Kay for her lyrics, which they believe are powerfully feminist. If you're on the lookout for your gender's new icon, it's obvious that the phrase "I'm gonna cut you with glass" is loaded with far more Girl Power than "gold lion's gonna tell me where the light is". The only problem with this is that the band's (male) synthist Pockets actually writes most of the group's lyrics, creating an altogether more [...]
