This is not the Film School that I remember at all! That being said, I can't help but feel more than excited by their new sound. Usage of electronics and more straight-ahead melodies are rumored to be abundant on the band's new album, Fission , which comes out on July 20th. This first single definitely gives a foundation to the claim that this will be the group's most accessible record to date, which isn't an entirely bad thing. Surely you'll find yourself enjoying this little ditty. Download: [...]

Film School have released the first piece of material from their forthcoming album, "Fission", via FFO Records. (via Spinner ) I like the new softer Film School. "Los Angeles shoegaze outfit Film School have been together for nearly a decade, and with their fourth LP 'Fission' coming out on July 20, the band is more congealed than ever, serving up a melodic, fervent, hazy and deeply collaborative effort. Instead of mourning the separation from their label, the band gleaned new inspiration from the change. "It's like any breakup - you either bury your head in the sand or you use that energy to create something," lead singer Greg Bertens tells Spinner. "This band's creative fuel always seems to come from a mix of the freeing energy you [...]

Film School released its debut LP, Brilliant Career, nearly a decade ago. And the initial line-up of Greg Bertens, Kyle Statham (Fuck), Scott Kannberg (Pavement), and Mauri Skinfill (Glitter Mini 9) was more than capable of cultivating such a career. However, the band's journey has been impeded with multiple roadblocks: a revolving-door of musicians, stolen equipment, and a fractured relationship with now defunct Beggers Banquet records. As the lone stalwart of Film School's original line-up, singer Greg Bertens continues to refine his ability to write and produce accessible nu-shoegaze tracks. The 12-tracks contained on the upcoming release [...]

Crawl back through the Future Sounds archives and you'll see a very long and intimate relationship with the band known as FILM SCHOOL . We've been family since their brilliant EP, Alwaysnever , and have watched the evolution of a band that has had entire line-up changes, vans stolen, label changes and various directions in sound. In the end the theme continues, which is one of constant forward motion, constantly redefining their goals and a band mature enough after 10 years to not chase the tail or do what's expected. [...]

New Tales To Tell, A Tribute To Love And Rockets was just named "Editor's Pick" at Amazon.com for the month of April. This means if you have yet to pick up the quintessential tribute to the band, you can download it digitally for the low price of $5. This compilation was lovingly produced by SiriusXM Radio DJ, Christopher The Minister , a longtime fan and former A&R rep for the band. Christopher gathered fellow fans of the band that ranged from Tool / Pucifer's Maynard James Keenan , [...]

9.6/10 Snowden are indie rock band from Atlanta, GA. Snowden 's sound hovers somewhere between experimental rock bands like Film School and I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness with ethereal guitar-driven melodies capped off with echo-ey vocals. But what really sets them apart is using that combination of reverb-heavy distortion and breathy vocals to hypnotize the listener with an uncanny ability that surpasses most within the genre. Their 2006 debut, [...]

Dave Dupuis is familiar figure to Eastside clubgoers, and not just for his head of hair, which seems to occupy the whole room. Dupuis, who plays guitar in Film School and was a sound man at Spaceland and for several bands (including Silversun Pickups ), recently debuted his new band, the trio Nightmare Air . It features Film School drummer and longtime friend James Smith and bassist-singer and fellow New Hampshire native Swaan Miller, and it's not just their local associations that have ears turning. Nightmare Air's freakout-meets-space rock sounds like a Silversun Pickups vs. No [...]

The last time you have to look at any hippies. I promise. @retrospect mukisa / retrospect. , thisisretrospect.com I didn't realize how difficult picking selections for Twitstock would be until I paused and analyzed the scope of what was being asked of me. Picking five songs that have and continue to influence me across genres is nerve-racking and painfully hard for me to do. Especially for all of the cool kids that [...]

My only quibble with "New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love and Rockets" is the "tribute" part, which seems a bit presumptive. Call me stuffy, but only the truly seminal bands should get tributes; the good ones can be saluted, and the others, well, covered . In a decade-plus of tailoring the Bauhaus aesthetic to make it safe for radio, Love and Rockets proved themselves a very good band (especially live, given the set I witnessed at Coachella 2008). They were are a band whose influences were influential, as opposed to today's hitmakers, whose [...]

Anyone that's been a FS reader over the years knows my undying love for the band FILM SCHOOL . I still believe their last effort, Hideout, was one of the biggest overlooked records to come out last year, but like 'ol G W. Bush, time will be the judge of history. The band is in LA now working on their next record which I'm told is sounding amazing, but if this single, " An American Dream" (from the [...]
