Last week saw the first DC performance in over five years from Florida's nimble musical conjurers, The Mercury Program. Fans had been hoping against hope that the reality of their longstanding hiatus was in fact, just that and nothing more dire. So they could not have been happier to hear both the fact that the group had signed to Lovitt Records to release a new album, and that The Mercury Program was also celebrating by going back on the road. Their stop in DC saw them performing with another much beloved group, also with [...]

Last November Lovitt records released new albums from The Mercury Program and Fin Fang Foom — Chez Viking and Monomyth respectively — and now the two groups are about to embark together on their first tour in five years. Following the dates below, the bands have plans to tour the northeast in June. Links: The Mercury Program | Fin Fang Foom | Lovitt Records Listen: Arrived Departed | Magnetic North Tour Dates [...]

MP3 : The Mercury Program - Arrived Departed Seems like most people I talk to got their introduction to instrumental post-rock through bands like Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. My initiation, however, was at a show in Richmond, Virginia by a band called The Mercury Program when they were touring on the album A Data Learn the Language (awesome title, btw). The show floored me at the time and remains stuck in my brain today - overlapping guitars drenched in delay, intricate/intense drumming, masterful dynamics and the best use of [...]
The second annual Harvest of Hope Music Festival will return to St. Augustine, FL this March 12-14, and one thing is becoming quite clear: music's most underrated music festival is quickly becoming one of music's most stellar music festivals. This year's lineup once again again showcases a diverse roster of national and international acts, including alt-rock legend Billy Bragg, acclaimed folk-rock outfit The Mountain Goats, psychedelic rockers Dr. Dog, indie sensations Rogue Wave, UK punk band Leatherface, and the hardcore group Senses Fail. And that's just getting started. Man Man, Delta Spirit, Anti-Flag, The [...]

Fin Fang Foom has been through a lot during its 12-year run, between the death of original drummer Peter Enriquez and guitarist Michael Triplett's recent near-fatal experience battling spinal meningitis. However, the Chapel Hill, N.C., trio has managed to take its misfortunes and turn them into something beautiful with just-released third album Monomyth (Lovitt). Opening [...]

Words: Gareth O'Malley The term "monomyth" refers to a pattern that underlies mythical narratives from various cultures: the hero ventures out into the world, contests with forces beyond his ken, and emerges victorious– but also transformed. It may seem that North Carolina-based Fin Fang Foom have chosen quite the lofty (some would say, pretentious) moniker for their third record, but when you take into account what the band have been through over the past six years, you realise that they would have been hard pressed to name it anything else. [...]

These days, say post rock to anyone and you'll likely get references to Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky, if they know it at all. But with Fin Fang Foom 's new LP (their forth overall and first in six years), you get something a bit more classic when it comes to the sub-genre: a clashing of post-rock and shoegaze, the drone of guitars and massive, echoing notes. It's hard, it's heavy, and it rocks full-force. It's not until the third track, "Lonely Waves", that Fin Fang Foom takes it down a notch [...]

Needless to say, not having time to update the blog for a few weeks has allowed the inbox to grow to Rosie O'Donnell-sized proportions. There's no conceivable way I can get it all caught up in a reasonable amount of time with more coming in each day, so I'll just take the wuss way out and offer it up in mixtape form. I will hold back a couple that I'd like to feature in the coming days, so if you're a cyclops keep an eye out for that. If not a cyclops, keep both eyes out for it. [...]

Last year, EAR FARM attended the inaugural Cherry Bounce Festival in my hometown of Raleigh, NC (checkout our coverage from last year HERE )... but this year we couldn't make it due to other obligations (it was during CMJ); however, that doesn't mean it wasn't an awesome time. Right? I mean, they went and made the festival a week-long occurrence with performances in a variety of venues throughout the city culminating in the big show on Saturday, October 24th outside of Raleigh Times that included sets from Sky Larkin, Peggy Sue, Schooner, Fin Fang Foom, [...]

Here's two songs I've uploaded on fileden a few weeks before but forgot to feature. Taking it's name from the Chinese dragon of the same name in the Marvel Universe , Fin Fang Foom is an instrumental/math-rock band from the US. This tune's off their Native Tongue EP on stiffslack with lovely cello parts. Moody & melodic stuff on a bleak Saturday, get it if you're into Paul Newman (the band of course) The second song is a totally awesome cover of [...]
After Fin Fang Foom's awesome Saturday night performance at Bar One during The Fest V, I got a chance to pick their brains a bit about Gainesville's music scene, their next release and inspiring shows they've been to. First off, is this your first Fest? Eddie : No, actually, we've done all of them since the first one. What do you think the best part of the Fest is? Eddie : Getting to see all the bands - all your friends. [...]
