If the Ack thought I would stand idly by while he launched a new section earlier this week (our new hot singles section Matt Dillon's Soul Patch ), he was mistaken. We've been thinking of creating a new section for a while to post the remixes we're sent, which are often quite good, but they don't often fit into what we normally do on a daily basis. So, we've created this section, that we'll run occasionally on Saturdays when we've go something good, so you can kick your weekend up a few notches. The name? [...]

I have always considered Owen Pallett to be one of those artists who consistently fall just shy of their enormous potential. His earlier albums were released under the moniker Final Fantasy, inspired by the popular video game (and changed in anticipation of copyright lawsuits). With Pallett's new name tag comes the powerful artistic statement of Heartland -- a sprawling, downright medieval epic album that hardly takes a breath from beginning to end. And why waste any time breathing? Pallet has shed the intimate skin of his earlier work and embraced orchestral whimsy. The skinny violinist who arranged strings for [...]
Enjoy the brand new Q&A below. Heartland will see daylight very shortly. MP3: Owen Pallett - Fantasy

So Owen Pallett released his new album 'Heartland' this week, dispelling the guise of Final Fantasy (although the music still sounds the same). It's a good listen, although not as edgy as 'He Poos Clouds'. He relies more on electronic sounds on this recording and less strings, but the orchestral builds and considered arrangements are still apparent. There are still some beautiful tracks on the album though, including 'Lewis Takes Off His Shirt' and a slower 'Red Sun No. 5'. The album is out now on Domino Records. There are tour dates on his myspace too. Pop your ears around [...]
Owen Pallett is an interesting guy, that's for sure. He's been making music under the moniker Final Fantasy since 2005, but in preparation for the release of his new album "Heartland," Pallett announced he'd be giving up the Final Fantasy name and would be using his own name from now on. The decision was reportedly made to help distinguish his music from the massively popular video game (of which Pallett is a fan and that's where he took the name from). If you're asking me, now was the right time to make such a move, less because of the start [...]

There are a couple of good reasons why Owen Pallett isn't one of the most popular artists in the world. His former moniker, Final Fantasy, rendered him a little un-Googleable, and marked him as overly nerdy from the outset. He titled his last record He Poos Clouds . And up until now, his output has ranged from gorgeously accessible tunes to weird songs with a deranged level of musical complexity. Heartland changes things. He's found a balance between his tendency to towards the idiosyncratic and his talent at four-chord wonder pop. Sure, there's one [...]

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars It seems that Owen Pallett has finally shed his video game moniker, suggesting to some that this album would show a wee bit of maturation for the orchestral singer/songwriter. Now that we have the name cleared, let's rest assured that Heartland is not an album about growing up, as it's clear that Owen still holds true to a great deal of the playfulness he's presented us with in the past, which makes him so endearing. [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Spinner Interview , New Music , Canada It's been four years since the violinist formerly known as Final Fantasy released his Polaris Prize -winning album 'He Poos Clouds,' a quirky masterwork about loneliness, escapism and Dungeons & Dragons. So when Owen Pallett stepped onto Toronto's Mod Club stage last night to introduce his latest album 'Heartland,' he was welcomed home with hearty applause. Pallett began with his usual self-looped solo performance before being joined [...]

Words: David McGowan Turning disappointments into daydreams, Owen Pallett has created a playful, wistful, wipe-away-the-tears-and-smile kind of a record; a record to lose yourself in as you trudge through the snow. ' Heartland ' is one of those words, like 'Motherland', that more often denotes an imaginary space than anything physically real. It's the space of people happy to fence other people in (or out) of a made up line on a map, or people pining away for some imagined utopia. And it seems to me that negotiating the illusionary and dreamlike [...]
Of all the Canadian albums that people in my neighbourhood have been anticipating for 2010, Owen Pallett's Heartland has to be near, if not at the top, of the list. He's the X3 Artist of the Month (great background info here if he's a new artist to you) and I've already heard it said from one CBC Radio 3 personality that after hearing it he has no doubt this will the best album of the year and he defies anyone to beat it. Strong words in January, but I have to say, after an [...]

When Owen Pallett announced he would change his recording moniker from Final Fantasy back to his original name, the primary reason was because "the laws of trademark infringement exist for good reason." That may be so, but fans could have understandably seen that as something of a distancing from the violinist's past work. But his newest album is not quite a distancing from the violinist's past work. Or, I mean, much at all. Heartland , instead, is more or less a retreading of similar, past ideas. They've been fleshed out at points, true, and sometimes Pallett stumbles [...]

So here we are, my favourite songs of the year. What be they? How sound them? All is revealed. I think what strikes me about the music of the last twelve months is the blizzard of originality. An awful lot of new sounds were made. It's a little like the melting-pot at the centre of western music worked very well this year, because a lot of these songs have influences that are wide and disparate. Is this list, taken as a whole, better than that of 2008? I think it just might be. But only just. The artwork is what [...]
(photo: heinekenmusic.ie) Late last month, on the cusp of releasing Heartland (out in North America today), Owen Pallett announced that he would no longer be using the name Final Fantasy to release music. He made an official statemnt citing: "I began playing solo violin shows in 2004. Although it was essentially a solo project, I named the band Final Fantasy, as the experience-and the tone of the material-was reminiscent of the hours and hours I had spent as an adolescent playing those epic JRPGs. [...]

Well the last few weeks around the new year's didn't really have much going on in the way of new albums hitting the shelves, so this is really the first big week of releases of the new year. Of course the huge release this week is the sophomore effort of Vampire Weekend with their new album Contra . Will they fall victim to the sophomore slump or will the peeps be digging on this one as much as the debut? That one along with all the other notables are below, which ones are you pumped about? [...]

Vampire Weekend - Contra "Horchata" After dropping last year's biggest debut, the preppy Manhattanites are back with another batch of Upper West Side Soweto on Contra . Named for a Mexican rice drink , lead single "Horchata" features faux-marimba and the same sun-shiney harmonies and poly-rhythms that made them the favorite soundtrack to sorority parties across the country. Final Fantasy / Owen Pallett - Heartland [...]
