Krautrock legends (and Germany's biggest music cred namedrop for lazy journalists) Can get an electronic homage today. 1/2 of Cabaret Voltaire, Richard H Kirk turns out a wicked late 80s techno version of I Want More. For posterity I'm also throwing in a version from a Wax Trax! -era Fini Tribe as well as a 90s techno acid cut from Scotland's infamous Ege Bam Yasi . Richard H. Kirk - I Want More [...]

As I said on Friday, for the next two weeks I'm going to have my top 10 Weatherall remixes. In keeping with this blog's unwritten rule, I'm not including anything less than 5 years old, which sadly rules out his remixes of Primal Scream's Uptown and of David Holmes' I Heard Wonders . First up, his remix for Finitribe of their 101 track, from a 1991 promo on One Little Indian. This is close on nine minutes of Weatherall remix genius, with the gently picked piano (can a piano be picked?) drifting along with the [...]

This is later period Finitribe. The sunshine and all round good vibes from Unexpected Groovy Treat era Finitribe had disappeared. This was replaced by a harder, trancier, goa-edged sound. From 1995, Love Above remixed by Doug Osbourne and Dave Wesson with John Vick. Goes on a bit this one. Finitribe - Love Above (Sourmash Dave's Goa Bandwagon Mix ) Buy
is a method of one button podcasting or whatever the kids use to throw your content onto iTunes these days. I could probably knock together some kind of script to create that, but it's too much like real work and I have enough of that to get on with every day and I really want to mess about with music and videogames in the evenings instead of php and html. Moving on, today's thingcast is based around dreams: Hypnotone - Dream Beam Cathy Dennis - Just Another Dream (Alternative Bass Dub Version) Adamski - [...]

Finitribe-related activity with remixes by Justin Robertson in his Prankster guise. Peter Perfect was John Vick, David Miller & Philip Pinsky - aka Finitribe. Quite why they decided to use another name is beyond me. Unless it was because they were still contracted to One Little Indian at the time. This came out on their own Finiflex label in 1993. It has a certain period charm but was never one of their strongest releases. Peter Perfect meets the Prankster - Pitstop (The Prankster's Wacky Race) mediafire [...]

This post picks up Finitribe in the 1990s. By this time they had left One Little Indian and they early positive House vibes had deteriorated into something more paranoid and techno-based. From an interview with snarl.org in 1998: "Finitribe have pared down to two members working with guests and have released a new album, Sleazy Listening, with producer John Roome, better known as The Witchman, which sees them veering off towards dark soundtrack-style epics over spooky varispeed breakbeats. The vocals, too, have changed being more gloomy stream-of-consciousness flows [...]

Scottish Housers Finitribe. Today, we pick up their best period, which surrounded release of their 1992 album "An Unexpected Groovy Treat". Scottish dance music unit, who shared the same One Little Indian Records label as their fellow countrymen the Shamen, but failed to replicate their success. It was not through want of effort, or, for that matter, talent. The band took their name from "Finny Tribe", a name given to the entire fish species by Irish religious sect the Rosicrucians, as well as by the common people of that country. Chris Connelly, Philip Pinsky (Born Philip [...]

Finitribe had a long existence, from 1984 to 2002. I only really knew about them in the early 1990s when they were on One Little Indian. They produced some wonderful house music in that time, before going on to make more techno orientated sounds. This post contains some early UK house classics. From Wikipedia: Finitribe was a dance music band from Edinburgh, Scotland. The group is sometimes also referred to as Fini Tribe. The name was taken from finny tribe, a term used by the Rosicrucians to describe the fishes. They began in the mid [...]

As we get towards the end of Weatherall's birthday celebrations, a last remix from 1990 and one from 1991 - Sly & Love Child and Finitribe. Sly & Lovechild were Simon Lovechild and Sly. According to Simon's MySpace "Recording artist, keyboard player and producer releasing under the name LOVECHILD /simon lovechild/sly and lovechild/ MOMBASSA/ DEA /SLP/original and current keyboard player for flowered up & FC20 releasing tunes since late 80s." I don't think they released much and I never knew why Weatherall remixed them. [...]

I was sorting through some stuff for the letter F when I came across this record by Finitribe. I couldn't remember it. It turned out to be untypically hard techno. It sounds like Ripped in Glasgow to me. Finitribe came from Edinburgh. The band took their name from "Finny Tribe", a name given to the entire fish species by Irish religious sect the Rosicrucians. Starting off in 1984 as an indie-guitar band called Gallery Macabre, they latched onto sample-based dance music - like so many other bands [...]

ANDREW WEATHERALL DELIVERS 2 EXCLUSIVE DJ MIXES Andrew Weatherall gave us these two exclusive DJ mixes as a gift, k? There are for you only! We will throw the most insane party on February 12th in Berlin at Tresor Club - where it ALL started! to me this is important as Andrew's mix of guitar music and beats back then in the early 90ties created RAVE in Manchester. Who knows where we all would have been without his mixes for Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, That Petrol Emotion, Jah Wobble, James, The Grid, New [...]

Your choice is a repost - Finitribe mixed by Weatherall. I'm pleased with your choice as I really love Finitribe's work and Weatherall's remixes are superb. Finitribe came from Edinburgh. The band took their name from "Finny Tribe", a name given to the entire fish species by Irish religious sect the Rosicrucians. Starting off in 1984 as an indie-guitar band called Gallery Macabre, they latched onto sample-based dance music - like so many other bands of the time. Their 1992 album 'An Unexpected Groovy Treat' was [...]

I posted the Weatherall remix of Finitribe's "101" single a couple of days ago. This was in lieu of the "101.93" mix which I couldn't find. But I now have. You know how it is. You know you have the record but you just can't find it. It preys on your mind. You become obsessed. You spend hours turning the house upside down. Searching through thousands of records to find the one you want. No? Oh, I did. Finitribe - 101.93 [...]

Another classic Weatherall remix for you. This time for another Scottish band Finitribe in 1991. Their 1992 album 'An Unexpected Groovy Treat' was the album on which they discovered ecstasy. [...]

After 100 posts, it's time to move to the letter B. There is no other place to start than Boys Own. First a fanzine, then parties, then clubs and finally a record label. The fanzine was the most influential in UK dance music ever. Period. Boys Own magazine was started in 1987 by Terry Farley, Andy Weatherall, Cymon Eccles and Steve Mayes. They were writing about their triple obsessions of football, funk and left-wing politics. By the spring of 1988 it was "The only fanzine to get right on one matey". From then on they satirised the fledgling [...]
One of the best things about starting up TVV has been the responses I've received in the form of comments from readers and visitors. I'm now delighted that someone who was one of the first to offer his thoughts and observations has taken up an invite to become a regular contributor. Colin P (to distinguish him from Comrade Colin aka Dr Tristesse who also occasionally leaves his thoughts behind
