Wrappin' up this list of the best Jay-Z Mashups - & a few remixes - we move on to Jay-Z in a modern rock, electronic styling. What I really wanted to get out of these was to show Jay-Z in a different light // in a different genre. And that's exactly what you'll find. Would love to hear him do an electronic or jazz-based album (in muh dreams), but until then I'll rely on these mashups. So what's your favorite mashup out of the bunch? (also make sure to [...]

A while back I posted the superb Guilt Trip edit of Lindstrøm & Christabelle's 'Can't Stop' . The mysterious remixer is back with some gentle, percussive-based funk that can only bring to mind poolside partying, rooftop terraces and lazy summer days... to quote the Park Ranger: "Fucking Balaeric". Finley Quaye - Even After All (Guilt Trip Edit) [pelski highly recommends] Pelski

Back in the mists of late nineties a young and rakishly handsome singer-songwriter managed to scale the mountain of pop asecendancy with an album of inconsequential soul and reggae. When record sales actually counted for something the album "Maverick A Strike" found its way onto the student CD players and coffee tables of the down-with-it mums the length and breadth of the country. And for several summers the cheerful, vapid licks of "Ultra Stimulation" parped merrily from every radio. "Even After All" tantalisingly drifted from speakers like the waft of a Subway bakers oven, promising sustainance and fulfilment but [...]
This weeks listings include international dates from Twin Atlantic, Broken Records, Isobel Campbell and The Vaselines while Vic has more on legends Primal Scream and their Screamadelica Anniversary tour down under. Primal Scream in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. by Vic Galloway It's amazing and ever-so-slightly scary (for me anyway!) to know that Primal Scream's classic [...]
As Vic has been taking a well earned break after hosting Edinburgh's Hogmanay party with Biffy Clyro, Dear Scotland has been updating the Scotland on Tour database with almost 300 new international shows from Scottish artists as diverse as Primal Scream, Isobel Campbell, Mogwai, Eddi Reader and Nazareth. Check it out below: Scotland on Tour [...]
One hundred, it turns out, is not a very big number. One or two worthwhile songs from the last decade, I admit, didn't get the chances they deserved to shine because I had a limit. Omissions were made, and for the following glaring ones, I sincerely apologize. The Grossly Overlooked - I just fucked up, okay? After [Read Full Post...]

Toronto - When it was announced a month ago that Beth Orton was playing the Mod Club in August, I got quite excited. It's been a long time since she has put out any new material and frankly, I've never had a chance to see her live. Brian was excited too, as he emailed me asking me to get him into the show. Sadly, she cancelled her show a few weeks later, probably having looked at all the earthquakes, riots and power outages in our city and decided Toronto might not be the best place to visit this [...]

The aural sensations that beset me when I listen to Even After All are difficult to describe. This track is something else. It's smooth, sophisticated, slightly funky vibe, it's laid-back rhythm, the singer's unique way of expressing himself, all contribute to make this track a classic and a mainstay of my late night playlists. For me, Finley Quaye immortalized himself with this track. It's a classy blend of dub and electronica made complete by Quaye's vocal performance, and it goes down chilled like an icy caipirinha. But over the years Finley Quaye has developed a different kind of [...]

Welcome to this week's Friday Fives, when we all choose the winners of the Communion Compilation Competition. Those of you interested in this sort of thing will know that this competition is to win a copy of this lovely album , featuring all sorts of alt-folk (or whatever) royalty who have performed at the eponymous London club night run by a Mumford and a Cherbourg. So, simple, please just list your favourite hipster photo from the following five examples, which I have chosen as being the best of all the submissions I received. The top three will [...]

As I mentioned a couple of posts back, London's absolutely baking at the moment. We're in the grip of an intense heatwave, the type of hot spell us Britons spend months and months idolising and yearning for, then quickly despair of and detest once it arrives. Well, most seem to do so. Personally I love [...]

Sping. SPRING. Hurry the FUCK UP for Christ's sake before we all go fucking mental. Good grief what a long drawn out wait it has been. Some sunshine would be nice. A cup of tea in the garden would be nice. Actually, even the chance to go outside of a weekend and rescue the garden from the tangle of weeds and fallen leaves it has become over the winter would be nice. Obviously there'd have to be coke and whores afterwards, just to keep up the rock 'n' roll pretensions, but for now a nice cuppa and a Rich Tea [...]

DOWNLOAD Diwon is influenced heavily by his family's roots in Yemen, Ethiopia, and Israel. His musical taste seems to also have been subconsciously influenced by the the different countries in which he lived while growing up as a Navy brat, including Japan where he lived for 3 years as a child. This multicultural maestro is always full of surprises, and his latest release is no exception. The fresh aesthetic of the Asian region has somehow stuck with him [...]

I almost feel kind of bad posting this one so soon after the post on Tricky . He and Finley Quaye are blood relatives (though I've heard different stories as to exactly how they're related), but last I heard, they weren't exactly on speaking terms. Oh well, I doubt either of them will be dropping by here any time soon. Finley was born in Scotland, but grew up in London. His father and grandfather were both jazz musicians (though he didn't meet his father [...]
Jonathan Evison is on a roll: Publisher's Weekly, in a starred review, had this to say of All About Lulu, his debut novel from Manhattan's Soft Skull Press: "Evison's debut is a stunner! . . . viciously funny and deeply felt . . ." And Crossroads Films has already optioned it for a film. Jonathan Evison lives with his wife on Bainbridge Island, Washington. In this edition of Snobcast: Rorschach Jukebox Edition, we gave Mr. Evison the chance to score the movie before anybody else does, and threw in a few curveballs. The catch, as always: the subject [...]
In celebration of CMJ week, I have created some Mp3s from the CD that came in The College Music Journal issue no. 51 (Nov. '97). Before the word "blog" was a glimmer in any of our eyes, the CMJ CD was how a very large percentage of people discovered music. And so, in the spirit of brief descriptions and rhetorical questions, I will now share my thoughts in one sentence or more for each song selected. Portishead - "All Mine" This song has some ill-tyme break beats and the horns drop in [...]
I can't even begin to answer that question, as 1997's Maverick A Strike is the only album I have owned; though a quick perusal of Amazon shows Quaye has released a number of albums over the past ten years, including a collaboration with William Orbit. Innarestin. Somewhat surprisingly, this album has aged pretty well, not [...]
