"Fiona Apple is skeletal and a total psycho. I wanna make out with her and then be her therapist." That's a direct quote from a friend who recently had the good fortune of seeing Fiona in concert, and it's one that somewhat accurately describes why, when Ms. Apple announced a new record due out June 26th, it immediately shattered any preconceived excitement for most other albums due out this year. The simple fact is that she is on another level. She's an insane genius who everyone should appreciate, and this artwork is actually a [...]

The FIONA APPLE is back against the 2012 walk with new mp3s. Butt is making digital waves this Thursday eve for a letter she penned in 2000 to a then 16-year-old high school student, who had asked her to write a note for his school's gay-straight-alliance. Read the text in the jpeg above. And now. Amazing. Beautiful. Tears. And that's why the F APPLE is better than some of your faves. PS we need more of this SHE-ness in our [...]

HBO's medieval drama Game Of Thrones premieres April 1, and this season's plot involves five different claims to the throne and these respective factions' ongoing clobbering of one another (#TeamRobb). But, yet another mantle is up for grabs, one that involves absolutely nobody getting their head cut off; the claim to "your album of the summer," a competition that includes many of the 25 albums in our list. While bands like Beach House and Bear In Heaven have already earned their inclusion, many details are just beginning to emerge about many of the [...]

Nickel Creek 's Sara Watkins is coming back with her second solo album. Sun Midnight Sun will be available on May 8th. The new record is mostly Watkins originals, but she does tap a few other songwriters, including Willie Nelson ("I'm a Memory"). At first blush the most intriguing effort is her duet with Fiona Apple of all people on the Everly Brothers' " You're the One I Love ". Watkins does have a tour planned, but one that comes nowhere near here. [...]

The NYC songstress covers the Twitty classic.

photos by Dana (distortion) Yavin , words by Rachel Kowal A long line of hopefuls extended down the block outside the Bowery Ballroom Monday night for Fiona Apple 's second sold-out show in New York. (The first was Friday night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg .) Given Apple's reluctance to perform and the long gap of silence since her last album (7 years), seeing her perform was surreal - especially since she opted to skip [...]

photos by Ryan Muir Fiona Apple @ Bowery Ballroom - 3/26/2012 "During [the Music Hall of Williamsburg] show Ms. Apple moved between the microphone at center stage and a piano off to the side with an array of votive candles on top. Slender and toned, she wore a green tank top; her muscles spoke loudly as her body moved in precise ways on each song. On "Paper Bag" she held her hand tight against her stomach, muscles flexing, [...]

I've been so focused on Fiona Apple and her return to New York City that I won't be there for, I almost forgot what has got to be the milestone of the week: Aretha Franklin turned 70 on Sunday, March 25. It makes me feel incredibly old that so many icons whom I can remember being younger than I am now, are now turning 70. Coming soon (April 24, to be exact): Barbra Streisand. I met Franklin exactly once, in the early '90s at one of Clive Davis' pre-Grammy parties in New York City. She didn't say [...]
