Last week, Fiona Apple played her first two solo shows in a few years at SXSW. The one I saw, at Stubb's, was a pretty magical affair - a great talent gutting her way through obvious issues of stage-fright and self-consciousness, rising to the occasion and reminding the world of her own power. During those shows, she debuted three new songs, and we've already posted video of two of them, "Anything We Want" and "Every Single Night." Below, we've got a fan-made video of the final track, an ornate piano-based track called "Valentine." Read More...

Frank Yang The return of Fiona Apple to the public eye may have been the story of the SXSW not nicknamed, "The Boss". Some six plus on from the release of her last album Extraordinary Machine , it's not been an absence of, oh, Kevin Shields proportions but the tales of shelved releases and label battles have certainly given her a mythology of similar proportions. I say this from the perspective of someone who's never counted himself a fan of her work but who's certainly heard the [...]

by Andrew Frisicano Fiona Apple @ Central Presbyterian Church ( via ) So far, Fiona Apple is definitely in the running for most blogged about act at SXSW. She played two shows--at Austin's Stubb's on Wednesday night and Central Presbyterian Church on Thursday night. Of the Stubb's show, the New York Times writes that "the baleful, anxious, doleful, enraged Fiona Apple was back in full force." The Austin shows are the first in a short tour [...]

Day 1 of music at SXSW was absolutely incredible. I started the evening off watching the always impressive Fiona Apple dazzle a packed house at Stubb's . Next stop was the Austin Music Hall where we caught Patty Griffin as she treated the crowd to a brief but stellar acoustic performance before accepted her admission into the Austin Music Hall of Fame. And then next was Christopher Cross , who was surprisingly good, but I have to admit I was disappointed that he didn't play "Arthur's Theme." [...]

Being at South by Southwest is like being on the Internet: There is too much information to process, you always feel like you're missing out on something better, and you are very rarely satisfied with where you are and what you have. So I guess SXSW is also like life, too, now that I think about it.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

"Oh my God, did somebody get a picture of that?" the guy next to me hollers. "Preferably on your iPhone?!" Fiona Apple was pacing the stage to enthusiastic applause after wrapping up a smoking performance of "Fast As You Can" and, snark aside, the dude had a point. It was Thursday evening at famed Austin BBQ club Stubbs , NPR's SXSW showcase, Apple's big return as a performer, and everybody wanted to capture it for posterity—to the point where the outstretched arms with cameraphone screens obstructed the performer if you were standing in the wrong spot. Certainly [...]

The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do . Female Vocalist, Alternative, Singer Songwriter - Fiona Apple played her first legitimate show in quite sometime last night at SXSW with a set list spanning her entire career, albeit a bit heavy on When the Pawn but that's okay. Last night at NPR Music’s SXSW showcase, Fiona Apple debuted two new songs. Watch the live videos of "Anything We Want" (incorrectly titled on YouTube) and "Every Single Night" below.
For the first time in nearly five years, Fiona Apple performed outside of Los Angeles as the songstress took the stage at NPR's showcase at SXSW last night. Considering that the 34-year-old siren falls on both our Must-See Pop Acts Of SXSW and Artists We Demand New Music From lists, to say we're anxious to see Fiona live would be the understatement of the decade. Technical difficulties didn't stop the Grammy winner from performing old favorites like "Fast As You Can" and teasing the crowd with three of her new tracks, “Anything We Want”, “Valentine”, [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Chromewaves A live wire is dangerous -- and, yes, exciting -- because of its power and unpredictability. But it's also an adjective that can be hard to come by at SXSW , where 2000-plus acts play here, there and everywhere, and often deliver rote set after set. But live [...]
