The 2013 Academy Awards has revealed the shortlist for its Best Original Song category, and some familiar faces are among the 75 possible nominees , specifically: Arcade Fire's "Abraham's Daughter" from The Hunter Games (the song is also nominated for a Grammy); Fiona Apple's "Dull Tool" from This Is 40 ; The Black Keys' "The Baddest Man Alive" from The Man With the Iron Fists ; Karen O's "Strange Love" from Frankenweenie ; Mumford and Sons' "Learn Me Right" from Brave [...]

The last time the criminally under-the-radar Brooklyn phenom known as MeLo-X shared sonic space with Rihanna , he ended up talkin' that nasty talk back on a hot "Royal Penis Is Clean" edit of her "Birthday Cake" . Fast forward a year later and he's made a return trip back to the Bajan pop goddess' well, this time planting his remixing claws on her dark, Unapologetic -housed power ballad "Stay", arguably the singer's greatest slow tempo pose yet and one MeLo deliciously makes over with a tornado of dizzying, [...]

Even though MTV doesn't really play them anymore, music videos have had a strong resurgence these past few years thanks primarily to services like YouTube and Vimeo. In addition to monetizing their visual content, artists have been able to reach and therefore gain more fans through a medium thought to have killed the radio star. It has also led to some huge leaps in technology as seen in Chairlift's incredible video for "Met Before". Director Jordan Fish and his team essentially allowed the viewer to choose their own adventure (remember those books?) and create a new experience each time [...]

It’s easy to hate New Year’s because it forces you to reflect on time passing—and personally 2012 was the best and worst of times. Musically, I started something a little different this year—I kept month-by-month playlist diaries on Spotify. I created a new playlist on the first of every month and dumped every track I felt the urge to listen to intentionally onto them (nothing casually overheard). What came out was a chronicled examination of my own self-indulgence, struggles and parties. The majority of the music wasn’t new, but here are my clear favorites released this year, in order of [...]

This year's Grammy nominees were announced last Wednesday, and I've only just recovered from my yawning fit long enough to discuss them. Seriously, in keeping with my waning interest in all things Grammy-related in recent years, I forget all about the nominations on December 5 and didn't even bother to read about them until two days after they were revealed. It's been years since I've watched a Grammy telecast in its entirety, partly because it's harder to do when you're living abroad, but mostly because a few highlights aside -- like Pink's acrobatic performance of "Glitter in [...]

Year after year, the ladies in music prove they can hang with the boys, and 2012 was no different. In fact, 2012 was such a big year for the ladies, i'm gonna have to break this into a multiple posts. I tried to narrow it down, but how in the heck am I supposed to decide between the likes of Amanda Palmer, Frankie Rose, Patti Smith, and Sera Cahoone? Exactly. So without further ado, enjoy the first installment of good, from some of the most talented ladies in music. [...]
As the curtain starts to fall on another year, here's a question about years in general: Why don't more of them spawn great songs? I'm not talking about years and the songs that belong to them. Despite pop's continued diminishing value and the still-inexplicable rise of "Call Me Maybe," 2012, like most years, did produce an abundance, if not quite an embarrassment, of riches, from pretty much everything on Fiona Apple's The Idler Wheel to any given song on any given episode of Nashville [...]

#50 to #41 // #40 to #31 // #30 to #21 // #20 to #11 // #10 to #1 ------------------------------ ------------ 20. Dent May - Do Things Formerly known for ukulele-led material, Dent May traded the uke in for some vintage synths and a drum machine on Do Things , his second full-length on Paw Tracks. One of the album's standouts, “Best Friend”, is a disco-tinged burst of revivalism, with a touch of Brit-pop recalling the big-personality variety of Pulp and Squeeze. [...]

The first week in our 2012 Annual Report has come to an end. But what an end it is: our Top 50 Songs of 2012. For this list, we took into consideration the tracks that not only spoke to the year, but each respective act's ability to grow and engage their mind, genre, and sound. That might sound spiritual and what have you, but okay, maybe you're not a fan of dreamcatchers and stuff. Whatever. Feel free to let us know what you think, including some tracks you'll take into 2013 with you. Also, stay tuned [...]
It's the first week of December, but many music publications looking to get a jump on the competition have released ... Read the full article at http://www.prefixmag.com/news/ stereogums-best-albums-of-2012 /72382/
The annals of music history are filled with once-specific genre names that are now functionally meaningless. "Indie rock" and "EDM" are some recent examples, but back in the '90s, it was "alternative" that got so overused as to become meaningless. In fact, these days it's a term whose non-nostalgic use is largely limited to various music awards shows - including the Grammys, whose 2013 nominations were announced last night. Perhaps more than ever before, this year's crop of "Best Alternative Album" picks raises the question: What does "alternative" even mean in 2012? [...]

Well, here's the fourth part of Top 25 Albums of 2012 . We're so close to the top! By this time tomorrow you'll know all the songs and albums that I loved in 2012. Whew! I'm ready for a break. As I’ve said, I easily could have listed 50 releases, but I realized that half of those would have been albums that I only listen to when I’m in a particular mood. In other words, they’re not immediately accessible, and that to me knocks them down a notch. So, if you’re looking for 25 releases that you [...]
Here at Idolator, the editors have been continuously sifting through 20122s releases and poring over tracks to suss out the best of the best. Of course, let's face it: it was a dire year as far as consistent, solid albums are concerned. Forget the lack of a breakout smash like Adele 's 21 (which, to be fair, is an anomaly in this day and age) — despite steady sales for Mumford & Sons ' Babel and One Direction 's Up [...]

Despite our compilations of the week's best videos, it's difficult to remember many of them for long. Each week brings something new to marvel at and yada yada yada your mind totally erases any memory of that Kanye West video you gasped at while eating cereal one Thursday in April. Whereas you can essentially live with a song, most videos are consumed with what amounts to a glance and a nod. Granted, that's not the case for all of them, and, hey, wouldn't you know that's why we're sitting here with 25 of them in December. So, [...]

The Grammy Nominations were just announced. At this point it should be no surprise that this year's list contains names like Jack White, The Black Keys, Gotye, Adele, Foster the People, Florence and the Machine, M.I.A. (she got nominated for a video), and "fun" alongside all the major pop stars. And I guess Bjork is a given in the "Alternative Music Album" category any time she comes out with an album (this is like her 12th or 13th nomination). Mumford and Sons are naturally on there along with fellow [...]
