"I have become an aerial view of a coastal town that you once knew." With his dapper sportscoat and overgrown mop of unkempt hair, Fionn Regan could pass for a member of Maroon 5. Appearances, however, are deceiving. What Regan brings to the table, musically, is an Irish folk sound so compelling and pure that upon hearing him for the first time, I declared aloud that I had just had an ear orgasm. From Bray, Ireland, Fionn Regan could very well be compared to fellow Irish singer-songwriter, Damien [...]
I first heard Fionn Regan when Jonathan Ross played this track on Radio 2, and it's still my favourite track of his. Now it's his new single. Fionn Regan - Put A Penny In The Slot ( iTunes )

I first mentioned Ag-Rock in this post about Adrienne Young. If you are too lazy to click the link and scan the post for my definition, here is what I said: "Adrienne Young plays ag-rock. That is short for agriculture… Ag-rock is a meshing of Celtic, Appalachian, Bluegrass, Country, Rock and Folk. Earthy lyrics. Young's voice reminds me of Barbara Cohen, another purveyor of Ag-rock. Maybe I should do a post of Ag-rock tunes." And here is that post. Here are some songs that capture the feel, sound, emotion, instrumentation, etc. of this genre. [...]

Akmal , HSB's resident photographer, attended the Fionn Regan show at the Troubadour last night. In the pictures, Fionn Regan is the guy in the 1st and 4th picture, the rest are of the band. FYI. Take a look at the rest of the pictures on Flickr . Download audio file (Fionn%20Regan%20-%20Be%20Good %20or%20Be%20Gone.mp3) Fionn Regan - Be Good or [...]

Sunday, October 7th: Turbonegro @ Henry Fonda Turbonegro are always a good time, maybe not as exciting these days as they once were, but for those who've never seen their show, it's still worth the price of admission. w/Mondo Generator, Year Long Disaster Turbonegro - Boys From Nowhere ( mp3 ) Monday, October 8th: Fionn Regan @ Troubadour There's a reason Fionn Regan's The End Of History won the UK Mercury Prize for "Album of the Year", [...]

Haunted. I suppose that's the best way to put the spirit I have been left in since seeing Irish troubadour Fionn Regan play a week ago . I will add that it's "haunted in a most wonderful way" - but I move through my days and periodically think back on Regan's diminutive frame and his shy nature and his slow but assured words and dead accurate guitar. The Irish singer-songwriter is a modern treasure. For those who have not been exposed - here we go... Fionn Regan [...]

I thought this past weekend was going to be a quiet one (and in the grand scheme of things it probably was) but I actually ended up going to three different shows on Saturday, only one of which was on the original agenda. Here's a rundown of what I saw: Friday night I went to the Basement and caught Fionn Regan 's early show at 7 p.m. It was way more packed than I expected it to be that early on a Friday, but after noting the white plastic [...]
Probably my all-time favorite PR person I get emails from regarding music is named Sam. She works at Filter (get the title now?). She has turned me (and mostly like you, my dedicated readers) onto many exciting new artists this year. Below are 7 that struck a chord (both acoustic and electric) with The Duke. Fionn Regan ~ The Cowshed (melodic Irish songster a la David Grey or Damien Rice) Eulogies ~ One Man (melodic crunch-pop) Grand Ole Party ~ Look Out Young [...]
Entourage We rarely discuss the show Entourage in this space (if we ever write an article like this , shoot us in the face), except when Molly refers to Danish behind his back as Turtle. They finished up their season last night and it's not a good sign that I don't remember which season it is. Much like The Hills-Entourage probably has a similar amount of reality in it- Entourage is a show without the chocolate filling. All the conflicts are usually solved by sex with someone, and if there's [...]

This is a solid prize pack. Ragged mag hoodie - black and chic - is enough to make you want to enter, but how about a nice signed vinyl copy of Fionn Regan 's Mercury prize nominated album - The End of History (read our thoughts here ). So, if you want a nice hoodie and a slab of vinyl with a future star's John Hancock on it, drop us an email (herohill [@] gmail) or leave us a comment with your email address and hoodie size. Fionn Regan was awesome at Hotel Cafe on Tuesday night, even giving a shout out to Echo Park in "Put A Penny In The Slot," by replacing 'Buckenham Park' with Silverlake's less hip and more picturesque neighbor. We also have better taco's and interestingly named laundromats, if you're wondering. He was paired up with Ferraby Lionheart , who has a new album coming out in September (its actually already available on iTunes). Fionn has come a long way since I last recommended him ... apparently he is all over the radio [...]

It sounds completely dumb, but I stumbled upon one of the songs off of "The End of History" because of it's name. Hey I'm just being honest, sometimes people will click things that sound good . Irish born Fionn Regan (pro. Fin Ray-gen) reminds me of a Nick Drake-ish, but lighter and sometimes faster. Brittle double tracked harmonies comebines with subtle and sometimes folky acoustics, and song writing with fragile influences of late novelists, really makes the whimsical-ness . It's a good word to sum it up! Do you ever listen to music and think about where in your [...]

i chose this pic because it's what his music sounds like. believe me. there are artists and lead singers whose lyrics mean more to them than the music they overlap. recently i can think of Voxtrot as being so guilty -- i can also site the vast majority of popular emo bands, perhaps occasionally the almost-infallible m att p ond, and Jason Mraz as fellow contenders in this "wordplay." i think an important balance has to be struck between the message and the artwork behind it -- both in terms of the [...]

There is a certain kind of song that I love and do not quite know how to explain them other than calling them "wake up songs." Songs that build, but build very gradually and never explode they just sort of become realized, if that makes sense. I have spent a good amount of time compiling a definitive mix of these songs, which are all part of a 50 song playlist that is played on shuffle each morning to wake me up. I think you will enjoy these a lot. The Voxtrot song I featured in this mix really [...]

someone had to walk home from the LES Musak:Folk/Acoustic If my ears had a thirst that only a good guitar melody and inspired lyrics could quench, then Fionn Regan sounds like a tall glass of water after eating a half-pound of sunflower seeds during a day game in the bleachers at Yankees Stadium. In fact, all those things happened last weekend: Yankees won 18-3 and I got Fionn's The End of History (2006). Eventually, I got a tall glass of water. Day-to-day, my taste in music [...]
fionn regan played for 45 minutes last night. 45! ha ha. he comes out all skinny jeans harmonica playing singing stories and understated acoustic complexity on the guitar. it's not totally my style. but, indeed, he was pleasant enough. he said something about it being early for a show (7:30) and that it was a bit like a shepherd pretending to be a car park attendant. which made no sense to most people. that was pretty much our favorite part. oh, and the part where someone bought me a drink. also good. i think instead of being the [...]

Fionn Regan, Royal Festival Hall by Richard Thane We stumbled across this Fionn Regan download earlier today, and with the recent announcment that his album The End Of History is in the shortlist for the Mercury Prize we thought we'd share the wealth and offer up his sublime cover version of The Beatles classic Getting Better.
