Why doesn't anyone talk about "freak folk" anymore? Unlike most ad hoc genre tags, I always thought that one was kinda benign, and accurate to boot. A couple years, I snatched up many a record that could claim an association to Animal Collective, back when they were caarazeeee psychedelic campfire troubadours. I guess these folks could've been the women's auxilliary . Still a quite charming woodsiness. First Nation - Female Trance

Genre: Indie Folk Label: Crystal Country Records Wonderful indie folk on Crystal Mountain Records which brought us Machinery some days ago. The first tunes reminds me on The Dodos with their tribalesque drumming and beautiful guitar melodies. But First Nations have a wider sound with more colors and space in it and it really stands for it's own. It's Thursday and that usually means a post chock-full of videos here at the hill, but I'm on vacation for a few days. That should give me a pass on getting the Video Hits posted, but since we already missed the Video Hits last week, I knew that wouldn't do, and so I've quickly put together a fairly eclectic post with some of the most recent CDN videos that have come across the HH news desk. This group of songs is all over the map, both the geographical kind and the musical one, with [...]
If you are looking for new indie folk music, look no further. First Nations, aka Derek Janzen, creates woodsy folk music with simple melodies and lyrical verses. Janzen's bedroom recordings are the imaginative works of an earnest, unassuming musician. His latest album Black Beach is a sprawling journey into the wilds of Canada, the landscape of Janzen's emotions. 03 We Faced Each Others Homes.mp3 First Nations - We Faced Each Others Homes Download [...]

The melodies are bound tight; sinewy and powerful. The casio melodies and guitar are soft and billowy, but the kick drum threatens to break through the protective cage around your heart and expose the beating organ to the world. Black Beach , the new LP from Victoria based First Nations, is a one-man revolution. Tribal drums fuel our march but it's Derek's yelpy vocals that bring the loners and miscreants out from the dark basements and away from the glow of the screen with his own understated take on those [...]

When I first heard Victoria's First Nations - known to his family and business associates as Derek Janzen - I was blown away by the intricacies and reach of his bedroom symphonies. He refused to limit his compositions, adding surprising textures to even the most standard melodies, somehow challenging and exciting the listener at almost every turn. That's why when I first listened to Wands , the new LP from First Nations, I wasn't that all that surprised by the larger sound the [...]

With the influx of affordable laptop recording software and the seemingly never ending obsession with lo-fi, it's hard to find a bedroom pop artist that stands out. When it comes to Victoria's Derek Janzen - aka First Nations - his unique collection of sounds probably shouldn't grab you as easily as they do, but Before There Were Mountains is the type of record you find by accident and hold onto like a treasure map from One Eyed Willie. Without sounding too cliche, it's the risks and originality Janzen offers up [...]

Audiversity's weekly column, slightly modified, on random music in a predetermined number of words between 1 & 150. This week's randomly generated number: 111. MA: A sometimes-overlooked album in King Tubby 's amazing discography, Dangerous Dub (named after his studio's perilous location) was proof that the dub innovator still had some tricks up his sleeve in 1981. Recorded with Jamaica's premier studio band, Roots Radics , as well as help from Jah Screw , Tubby submerged roots reggae in his [...]

parc de la villette Villette Sonique festival in Paris this year will be eccentric, noisy, unhinged but also melodious, charming, classy and of course, sonic. The festival takes its name from Parc de la Villette the iconoclastic park project done by master architect Bernard Tschumi with theoretical supplement by Jacques Derrida and it will take place next weekend. This year there are 2 open air events in the Villette Park and special events around Paris venues. A good selection of artists featuring [...]

I've failed to get this bloody " Female Trance " out of my head for a long time, and now it's your turn dear readers. Comparisons to Animal Collective and Gang Gang Dance are drawn everywhere on the net and I think [...]

We're taking a few days off to enjoy the extended weekend, celebrate our break up [...]
