Dirty Projectors - "Emblem of the World" ; At some point we're probably all going to get sick and tired of hearing great new tunes from the Dirty Projectors, but until we reach that point we will continue on like normal enjoying all of their gorgeous harmonies and fractured melodies pieced together to form perfect pop music. It's rare that I'm instantly sold on a band after hearing only one track, but you can now add First Rate People to that selective list. "Girls' Night" is the hottest slice of R&B-influenced indie rock I've heard this year and though it's much more direct than Dirty Projectors style, I believe fans of that band will dig this as well. Indie rock has undeniably been stumbling towards having some hints of hip-hop influences. Perhaps it began with Matt and Kim's "Daylight," only to continue with Dirty Projectors' "Stillness Is The Move," and buoyed by Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks." First Rate People There's nothing quite as vicious to be witness to in this world than a real, serious dog fight. Those first peremptory growls, turning suddenly into an outbreak of shrill animal cries and bravado, then the owners realizing they don't have the physical force/courage to stop what's happening because this is bigger than them, they are negligible factors in this scene, simple extras.
