Filed under: News , Holy Hell In a startling revelation, outspoken musician Tom Morello has revealed that he once worked as an exotic dancer. In a new guest column for NME.com , the Rage Against the Machine guitarist said that when he first moved to California, he was forced to shake his moneymaker to afford food. "When I graduated from Harvard and moved to Hollywood, I was unemployable," Morello admitted. "I was literally starving, so I had to work menial labor and, at one point, [...]

This is a fucking super group if I've ever heard of one. The band consists of HR from Bad Brains, Norwood Fisher of Fishbone on bass, Rocky George of Suicidal Tendencies on guitar, and DH Peligro of Dead Kennedys on drums. I'm serious. I know. You HAVE to see this. Mr. Green All Stars will launch a world tour this fall - it starts in at the Echoplex. Officially, Mr. Green's All-Stars describe themselves as " misfits of the world who believe in freedom of expression—no matter what the cost. " Check out the video below [...]

Set times have been announced for this weekend's Sunset Strip Music Festival , a three-day affair highlighted by Saturday's party on Sunset Boulevard. The street will be closed on Saturday between Doheny Drive and San Vicente Boulevard to accommodate two outdoors stages — with music going on inside the Roxy and the Key Club, there will be plenty to justify the $39.50 ticket price. The festival also announced that L.A. City and County firefighters get in free. [Pictured: L.A.'s Shiny Toy Guns , performing on the East Stage at 5 p.m.] After the jump, the set [...]

If one considers the sudden rise of modern punk, pop punk and industrial rock, 1994 was a landmark in music. Some would say this was the year that "real punk" died, what with the likes of Green Day and The Offspring hitting the surface. Though, California punkers weren't the only ones hitting the spotlight. The year also happened to be strangely perfect timing for Jim Carrey's breakthrough success, as he released three box office smashes back to back in 1994. Almost overnight, fans of all ages flocked to the Ianky new comedian, quoting and treating his films as if they [...]

[Photo by Jenny Lens] There are few people who helped transform the New York City punk scene more than Joey Ramone . Even if only as an icon of New York in the late 70s, Joey helped define a generation of punks as well as a certain country and bluegrass club. So as we approach what would've been his 58th birthday tomorrow [May 19], it only makes sense that said bluegrass club - CBGB's - would be hosting an online chat, featuring family and friends remembering the late Ramones [...]

STREAM: The Soul of John Black - Live on KCRW's Morning Becomes Electric Former Fishbone guitarist and Miles Davis sideman John Bigham is back with his third CD under "The Soul of John Black" moniker. The new disc, Black John , was released earlier this year and here is a snippet from the Washington Post's review of the disc: Incantatory funk choruses abound, while "I Knew a Lady" gets a lift from a propulsive go-go beat, and mid-tempo workouts like "Better Babe" and [...]

[Birthday cheers today for Emmylou Harris , who, via her website, points well-wishers to her favorite charity, the Keeta Fund ...] It's a massive evening for shows, starting with biggies like Lily Allen at the Wiltern and Will Oldham, as Bonnie "Prince" Billy , at the El Rey Theatre. ... It's almost criminal that Billy is playing the same night as Jason Isbell (who is at Spaceland) and Robert Francis (at the Troubadour) — it's not a stretch to think [...]

It's hard to come up with a much better story than John Bigham's resumé, but the veteran multi-instrumentalist - on his third album as the Soul of John Black - has conjured up a sensational narrative: It's the tale of a pawn-shop Stella guitar with special powers, the unknown Chicago bluesman who wielded it and the musician's tragic death in an alley at the hands of a mugger. From beyond the grave, the bluesman's songs are channeled through Black John, Bigham's alter ego. Sounds like good stuff, right? It's based on the 1976 blaxpoitation film "J.D.'s [...]

Ever search through your record collection and see some records that make you stop and think to yourself, "Why wasn't this record bigger than it should have been?" Exactly. Every once in a while we'll come across a record and it seems everything is perfect: the tunes, the solos, the lyrics and the works. However for some strange reason it never seemed to catch on. There's both a blessing and a curse to this theory. The blessing comes from the fact that because it didn't catch on, but also because you were on to it, it means so [...]
Ska fusion pioneers Fishbone rocked tiny JC Dobb's in Philly last Tuesday and it seems these guys haven't lost a step. Videographer extraordinaire Jake Krolick captured Fishbone's high energy set and shares a terrific ten minute clip featuring breakthrough hits Everyday Sunshine and Unyielding Condition plus covers of Sublime's Date Rape and Tupac's Changes. Frontman Angelo Moore is a bundle of nervous energy throughout the performance, never standing still for more than five seconds. The tight horn section adds brassy spice to the festivities and bassist John Norwood Fisher keeps [...]
