If you follow my posts, you know that I like music that transcends any one genre. My favorite kind of music is the type of jams which combine elements of hip hop, electro, and chill sounds without even sounding like it (re: seamless production). Five Deez ranges from dreamy hip hop to upbeat dance music without losing its core style. Sometimes the song has no vocals and focuses solely on the instrumentals, while other times it revolves around catchy lyrics which weave into the beat. The selection below is just a cross section of Five Deez's dense and varied discography. [...]

Nujabes - Letter from Yokosuka Today, February 7th - Jun Seba, known to the music world as Nujabes would of been 37 years old. The Japanese Hip Hop pioneer passed away last year on the 26th of Febuary. In addition to Japanese artists like Shing02, Clammbon and MINMI, he also collaborated with underground American hip-hop acts Cyne, Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, Fat Jon and British rapper Funky DL to name a few. Nujabes was known for his diverse instrumentals and will be remembered for much more [...]
Jun Seba - aka Nujabes (his name in reverse) - is a Japanese hip hop producer and DJ who died earlier this year in Shibuya at the age of 36. He had a real cool sound and thanks to Nick Firestone, he's getting some much deserved BGB love today. Five Deez is an American Hip Hop group that formed at Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1993. They channel a lot of musical styles, including blues and jazz, and kick it old school like back in the day. This track is the [...]

Hollaback Girl (ft. Busta Rhymes, Fabolous & Joe Budden) haha one of my all-time favorite remixes, using recycled verses from all these rappers on that hollaback girl beat. borderline brilliant? guilty pleasure? Gangstarr - The Question Remainz Guru waxing poetic over quintessential Premier G Dep - Let's Get It i was already on fish and spaghetti! this song gets me hype. if you're not an 80's baby you might have missed out on this one - NERDS [...]
Not really sure how I got introduced to fat jon the ample soul musician a number of years ago, but I've found myself revisiting him lately. He threads together hip hop, electronica, and funkier nu soul really well. Pase Rock, Fat Jon, Sonic, and Kyle David were in the Cincinnati hip hop group five deez. [...]

At some point â€" I’m not sure when or how â€" hip-hop started blurring the line between the genre’s traditional beat patterns and the more experimental, time-signature-skewing ways of electronic music. But I’m not complaining. As someone with lukewarm interest in electronic music, I’ll take any way to make it easier to digest. It’s like hiding a pill in ice cream for a child. In this case, I’ve been enthralled by Five Deez and their release Kommunicator [...]
