[Photo of Shit Horse at Habana Bar, Austin, TX 3/16/2011 during SXSW. Photo by Michael Piantigini.] Twenty aught-eleven was one of those star-aligning years that gifted me with tons of music I like - This year's list is admittedly pretty heavy on my wheelhouse veterans, but how lucky to still get such strong stuff from bands like Buffalo Tom , Five Eight , and the friggin' Feelies ! Having taken to heart The Long Winters ' John Roderick's admonitions on top 10 lists (and let's hope he gets that [...]

after taking some time to listen to about 20-30 records over the past 2/3 days, i decided that there was still a bunch of great stuff that i didnt mention in my top 14.5 of the year. so, i came up with another 11 records that i think are more than deserving of more attention. i could have actually come up with another ten but felt that a solid 25.5 records was good enough. although, i may get bored an post the other ten records, but i doubt it. one thing that continues to sadden me is that lack of [...]

Arctic Death are an indie/garage three-piece from East Aurora, NY. The band-singer/bassist John Crook, guitarist Steven Floyd, and drummer Harrison Scott Crook-formed in 2009. Their focus is simplicity and their sound is raw and immediate. The song "Golden" was released on June 14th and recorded live without overdubs. The ethic may be DIY, but the arrangement is nice and the vocal harmonies impressive, especially considering it was all done in one-take. This reminds me of some of my favorite Athens bands from the '902s such as Mercyland and Five-Eight . Their self-titled [...]
They say good things come to those who wait, and Georgia quartet Five Eight proves it with the release of Your God Is Dead To Me Now (Iron Horse). It's the band's first album since 2004, and it features the lineup of Mike Mantione (principle songwriter, singer and guitar player), Sean Dunn (lead guitar), Patrick [...]
In their twenty-plus year career, Athens, GA's Five Eight has amassed quite an impressive share of critical adoration and a loyal (and vocal) fan base. Despite a short stint opening for REM and a proclamation by none other than USA Today that they were "the greatest live band in the world," widespread success has been [...]

athens' five eight , i had never heard of em until some folks on twitter, who's opinions i trust, started tossing their name around and proclaiming them to be quite grand - my words not theirs. well, ive listened to their recently released, and i think first record w the original lineup in 14 years, your god is dead to me now , and it is indeed pretty fuckin awesome. there's a record that comes to mind that made a huge huge splash back in 03 that kinda catapulted the band into some kind of stardom. well, [...]
Wow, what a bang-a-lang week for new releases! For reals; it's almost difficult to know where to start. This week's new releases is like a never-ending gravy train of kick-ass music from a spectacular line-up of artists. And just in time as the first signs of spring begin to spread across the northern hemisphere. The [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

As the sole male teacher at my school I have the pleasure of teaching the boy portion of Human Growth and Development to a bunch of fourth and fifth graders. Not wanting us to go into this talk unprepared the district offers a mandatory training. There are three thing teachers should not touch in the classroom and these can be remembered by the acronym H.A.M. Basically our HG&D talk needs to be all vegetarian, no H.A.M . Just like these sliders, which came about because I was tired of seeing others eat cute little burgers without me . [...]
Kind of a roller coaster of a week, huh? I mean, The White Stripes broke up, yet you have a chance to win Bonnaroo tickets . And the Super Bowl is Sunday, but musically it doesn't offer anything to look forward to. I'm not sure where our Friday Mixtape fits in, but I do know you'll likely be more glad than sad over this week's offering. Included are the week's best singles and remixes, plus hand-picked covers from our friends at Cover Me . NEW Singles: "People's Partay" by [...]

Who says nobody plays rock music anymore? No-nonsense quartet Five Eight sprung up in Athens, GA in the early 90s, at a time when most folks assumed that the once vital music scene had up and moved to Seattle. After a handful of well-received releases, a strong regional following and a few high-profile tours with the likes of Urge Overkill and REM, the original lineup splintered, and when the umpteenth lineup's 2004 self-titled release arrived sporting an all-black cover, most assumed that Five Eight was no more. But here in the U.S., [...]

I was stoked Saturday morning when I read about a program called Tangerine! that automatically analyzes the songs in your iTunes library for beats per minute (BPM) and then allows you to make playlists based on beats. I've been looking for something exactly like this that will give me the right beats for running different speeds. I've been addicted to lengthening the amount of time I run lately ( thanks new shoes !) and always delight in finding the perfect song for the MPH I am going - my feet [...]
