Frank Yang One might think that after last weekend's three-day salute to the '90s I'd be ready to get back to the 21st century, musically-speaking, but instead last Wednesday night turned the dial on the wayback-machine even further - Chapterhouse was in town. The North American leg of their reunion tour, which began in late 2009, was delayed from May until this Fall due to volcanic ash though the Toronto show was cancelled earlier for reasons unknown. Hogtown was back on for the new dates, however, and at a larger venue no [...]

Kentucky-based publicity firm, Crash Avenue , state in the " About Us " section of their website that they're "fueled by a passion for good music and art." We definitely believe that seeing how their brand new free July compilation features three of Chicago's best up-and-coming rock bands. The comp, titled Guerrilla vs. Bear , features 10 tracks of not only Crash Avenue artists, but bands the firm dig and are friends with as well. Chicago is represented quite well as the comp features the track "Traitors" from dark prog-rockers [...]

Fresh from the Giant Panther's inbox, a band out of Toronto that has a great dark sound, similar to The Catherine Wheel or more recently, Elbows or Twilight Sad. I even hear a modern take on early U2 in songs like Out Of My Control. Epic rocking dark songs with a ton of energy and guitars soaked in wall of sound reverb. When done right, overdosing on reverb can be the perfect trip. Their second LP "Under Cover Of Brightness" is out now, and you can buy it digitally directly from the artist at their band camp page [...]

In the constant mania that is my life of searching for all things local-rock-and-roll-cool, I often overlook stuff tossed at me from abroad. But an album called Under Cover of Brightness was just dropped today from a little band out of Toronto, Canada named Fjord Rowboat. Hmm... yes, I know - a name that evokes [...]
Toronto's own Fjord Rowboat have a stellar new album Under the Cover of Brightness and are playing a CD Release show at The Horseshoe on June 5th. I recently had the chance to ask the band about the new record and their perspective on music in general. Here's what they had to say: T.O. Snob: First off, thank you very much for taking the time to speak with us. You're playing a CD release show
Do you wish Interpol could still make albums the way they used to? Were you left unsatisfied by the latest Black Rebel Motorcycle effort? Are Editors getting just too electronic for you? If you answered yes to any of the above questions I have a solution for you. It comes in the form of Under Cover Of Brightness, the forthcoming album from Toronto's Fjord Rowboat (out June 1st). What the
If there's one thing I love it's Joy Division-inspired rock. Okay, if there's one thing I love it's chicken wings, preferably suicide. But if there's two things I love it's chicken wings and Joy Division-inspired rock. Well my doctor won't let me have one of those anymore, but Toronto-based post-punks Fjord Rowboat will be providing the other as they prepare to release their new studio album

So it's been about a month since I last submitted a review. I've been out of the country. Ego subdued, I'm sure none of you noticed but that's okay I still love you. Amidst the hardcore DDR arcades , Lineage II internet cafes and strawberry flavoured KicKer bars , Seoul is a city I could really settle down in. Unfortunately no matter what city I'm in, I'm always extremely secular about my music. While I was there not once did I lend an ear to Rain or BoA (for example). Instead, I [...]

Toronto shoegazers Fjord Rowboat have been active since the fall of 2004 and have recently released their debut album "Saved the Compliments for Morning". This is guitar based indie rock in the same landscape as bands like Ride and Catherine Wheel. More good songs at the bands Myspace . Fjord Rowboat - Carried Away Fjord Rowboat - Paragon Share This
As I've said more times than you care to remember, I love bloggal archives. So the other night I was prowling around the early days' of one of my favorite blogs, Milk Milk Lemonade, and found "Lloyd Christmas," a pure little number by Oslovians, American Suitcase. I was so intrigued that a simple click took me to AS's website, where I unpacked the first two songs below. Wowser (if I might wax

E very single time I hear Toronto's Fjord Rowboat mentioned I instantly think of the fjords of Iceland and Scandinavia and then ultimately (and somewhat incorrectly) think to Sigur Ros. While Fjord Rowboat does share some of the ethereal atmospherics that the aforementioned Icelandic mega-stars employ, their sound is more akin to a modern interpretation of early 90's psychedelic shoegazer rock (a la Swervedriver) or like their modern counterparts Doves. On their new full length Saved The Compliments For Morning , their lush reverb-soaked guitars expectedly chime out into the hazy horizon and thunderous [...]

1972 Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp Continuing on with new Shoegaze fetish bands, check out: *luhn (pronounced "loon") is the work of Ryan S. Welfle from Oakville, Ontario Canada. Welfle creates an organic sonic sound "made up mostly of manipulated guitar and 'tape glitch beats', although other instruments such as bass, voice, bottles are often involved in the process". The overall result is a unique and enticing sound for some of the best shoegaze dreams you will ever have. Very nice indeed! mp3 Ganymede [...]

Fjord Rowboat / Saved The Compliments For Morning (independent) In the interests of disclosure, I should probably mention that I used to play with Fjord Rowboat guitarist Justin Grant in Bluescreen . And though I've seen them live a few times and enjoyed their self-released 2-song EP, I have to say I'm quite surprised and impressed with their debut full-length effort. Though never ashamed to wear their shoegazing influences on their sleeves, Fjord have managed to balance the classic dreaminess and atmospherics of the genre [...]

So last night was the Shoegaze Cover Show I've been babbling on about all week. This wasn't the first time I'd been to a show dedicated to paying tribute to the dreampop bands of yore - there was a Creation Records tribute night at the El Mocambo way back in the Spring of 2001 that was heavy on the shoegaze and even featured some full frontal nudity courtesy of White Cowbell Oklahoma . Last night's show was a more compact and penis-free affair, with the participating bands contributing a few covers [...]
