The all-powerful Reigning Sound roared out of Memphis with the realest soulful rock 'n' roll since the Flamin Groovies, the Real Kids and Esquerita all ruled the earth together. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Greg Cartwright makes 'em scream, shriek, cry and weep and he visits California far too seldom, so don't miss these shows at Alex's Bar this weekend! (With the Strange Boys opening!? How will we ever go back to normal?) Win tickets here , and then read this interview by Chris Ziegler. steven fiche The Flamin Groovies should be right there with the Stooges, the MC5, the Modern Lovers and Big Star when it comes to bands who'd help determine the future of American rock 'n' roll—they could do it all, from cute to crushing, and beneath every Groovies classic ("Slow Death," "Shake Some Action") are ... even more classics ("Teenage Head," "Headin' For The Texas Border," "Love Have Mercy," "Golden Clouds" ...) and a ton of stories about drugs and freaks, including Ted Kennedy, Ike Turner, Jimi Hendrix and a giant mongoose. Co-founder and [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music www.paulcollinsbeat.com Earning the title "The King of Power Pop," as Paul Collins has, is like being the dude that invented the electric car. Everyone agrees you're on to something, and some even think your ideas are good enough to save the world, but for some reason, you're never going to get your due. Thursday night at Union Hall in Brooklyn, N.Y., Collins made the case for why [...]

Somewhat inappropriate picture today? though, I'm not sure why but somehow I think a half naker girl always seems appropriate. either way it's a tease. When it's good it's good, when it's bad its better... right? so... a few songs for whatever is teasing you, or for those that have only ever made it through a few pages of Ptolemy's Almagest and then afterwards just stared at the sky thinking of something much more stupid but engaging, such as can i cook a pizza on the grill?, or how long could I live in the wilderness. According to [...]

This week The Aerosols', a really incredible psych pop band from San Francisco, is making the pilgrimage east to play four New York shows, one of which is a PopJew joint (at the Silent Barn this Thursday with My Teenage Stride, Dream Diary, and The Surprisers). I saw them in a recent trip to San Fran and had one of those "OMG PSYCH HAS BEEN MISSING FROM MY LIFE" moments that we all have every so often. To celebrate their visit, I've made you a mix in thei...

![[MP3] Harlem: "Sometimes (Flamin' Groovies cover)"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2135858_lg.jpg)
It's a good thing You Ain't No Picasso has been keeping close tabs on Austin band Harlem, because I almost missed this one! The boys like doing covers and their latest attempt is "Sometimes," originally released in 1965 by Paul Revere And The Raiders. Story goes, though, that Harlem never heard the original, just the 1976 Flamin' Groovies cover. Thus, this is technically a Flamin' Groovies cover. Confusion! Their first official full-length should be coming out sometime soon (fingers crossed), but until then we have what we have. And right now, we have this. [...]
This week's Baker's Dozen highlights 13 albums from the 1970s that often go unmentioned when discussing the best music from the decade.
Entire island ecosystems arise, corrupt, decay and disappear within the generous lifespan of Yo La Tengo, the New Jersey three-piece who reinvent endlessly what an independent American rock band is supposed to do—play Flamin' Groovies songs in heaven, for instance. Guitarist/singer Ira Kaplan speaks very early in the morning. This interview by Chris Ziegler.
Allow me to offer a brief apology to DC's independent record shops: I haven't graced your doorways in a while. I'm ashamed and I apologize. Oh, it's not for not wanting to, or should I say needing to. It's a balm to my psyche to be thumbing through your stacks of sheathed LPs. It's that, well...as we've been planning the 3rd installment of The Washington DC Record Fair this coming Sunday at Comet Ping Pong, I've felt the need to keep my wallet close by my side. I mean, I know what we have planned [...]

continuing the eighties theme that seems to be creeping up round my ankles like so much neon sewage here, i'll pay a brief musical tribute in this spare five minutes to one of the decades sterling performers. three things i dug about swayzees career: john milius' demented p(r)opaganda piece, red dawn the mad genius of next of kins high concept hillbillies versus the mafia pitch and the bit in road house where philosopher [...]

On the inner groove of Beale Street Saturday Night , amongst the various engravings that exist on old LPs, are four words in quotations: "WORLD BOOGIE IS COMING." This was a saying of Jim Dickinson's, who died on Saturday. His contribution to American music puts him in the company of men like his mentor Sam Phillips, about whom said: "...God created all men equal. I think God gave Sam just a little extra." The same could be said about him. I never met Dickinson, and always just took it for granted that someday I would. I saw [...]

As I was finishing yesterday's Replacements post, a blip came over my Twitter feed that Jim Dickinson had passed away. I thought, "no that can't be the same Jim Dickinson that I just wrote about." But unfortunately, it was. Here is the Associated Press article on Dickinson's life via Yahoo news . Memphis producer, musician Jim Dickinson dies By CHRIS TALBOTT, Associated Press Writer [...]

Jim Dickinson is the demented genius playing piano on Teenage Head by the Flamin' Groovies, Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones, My Babe by the Jesters, aka, the last great record on Sun, as well as Spirit In The Dark by Aretha Franklin. He also produced Big Star's Third and Mudhoney's Tomorrow Hit Today. Just to name a few.
