Joe writes: The Flamin Groovies are playing London soon, for the first time in 30 years. Should I go? If I do it will just be to hear this song, which I first heard on Mark Radcliffe's Radio 1 show Out On Blue Six many years ago. It has been a big part of my life ever since. It was produced by Dave Edmunds in 1976 and featured on the Clueless soundtrack in the '90s.
Having just completed a successful tour of Japan and Australia, The Flamin' Groovies have returned in full force! T he Cyril Jordan, Chris Wilson, George Alexander line-up that rocked the UK, Europe and the US from 1971 – 1980 are back in action. With the addition of Victor Penalosa on drums the band are set to return to British soil after more than 30 years to play a show at London’s Scala on the 2nd of July following a performance at Hard Rock Calling at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park [...]

Following a quick romp through Japan and Australia, San Francisco legends the Flamin' Groovies played a hastily arranged show in their hometown this past weekend--the first time this version of the band has played locally since 1981. The mid-'70s era Flamin' Groovies, with founder Cyril Jordan, George Alexander (bass), Chris Wilson (also of UK band the Barracudas), and Victor Penalosa (drums) tore through a tight set of their near-hits, kicking off with the slow-burning "Yeah My Baby," before running through their power-pop classics, "You Tore Me Down," "I Can't Hide," and of course, [...]
I was inspired to write this post, as tomorrow evening the Cyril Jordan- Chris Wilson version of The Flamin' Groovies are gonna be playing the tiny Elbo Room club in San Francisco (their ONLY US show, as a matter of fact). This gig sold out immediately, and you best BELIEVE I'm gonna be there. I've had the pleasure of seeing Cyril & Roy Loney recreate the warped insanity of the Flamingo / Teenage Head era, but have never had the chance to see Cyril and power pop vocalist [...]

Flamin' Groovies, "You Tore Me Down"
Much is made about 1977 being important as the year of revolution against rock music. We thought it might be a good time to see what they had to complain about. This week, we're looking at the best albums of 1976. When critics talk about the years that were the most important [...]

Found myself on a bit of a Flamin' Groovies trip last week, which included their first singer and guitarist Roy Loney's fab solo stuff. Which is where we come across that rare instant where the song apparently came first, and acted as inspiration for the group name. And a mighty fine song it is, too. Satisfaction guaranteed indeed. Scrambled eggs, ta-da-da... All my troubles seem so far away? Hmmm. Yesterday's the word today however, and it's here. Enjoy this somewhat passé six pack, and don't forget to buy some rekkids if you like what you hear. It's just yesterday after all. Flamin' Groovies - Teenage Head The Flamin' Groovies were a longstanding cult band of the garage / power pop underground and their releases actually split along that axis in an early / late manner. Teenage Head is undoubtedly their pinnacle and shows the debt they owed their Rolling Stones crush in full. The album is chock full of hip-thrust Jagger swagger and Beggar's Banquet -esque salt of the earth breakdowns and the surprising occasional foray into Beefheartian croakery that sets it all off nicely. Its albums like [...]

Generations of homegrown legendry teamed up at the GAMH Friday night to show young and old (and quite old) alike how roots rock is served. Alt-country hero Chuck Prophet , who emerged in the 802s with Green on Red and has never let up, and Roy Loney , former front man for 702s power pop progenitors The Flamin Groovies, brought their respective ace backups, The Mission Express and The Phantom Movers by for the show. [...]

The all-powerful Reigning Sound roared out of Memphis with the realest soulful rock 'n' roll since the Flamin Groovies, the Real Kids and Esquerita all ruled the earth together. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Greg Cartwright makes 'em scream, shriek, cry and weep and he visits California far too seldom, so don't miss these shows at Alex's Bar this weekend! (With the Strange Boys opening!? How will we ever go back to normal?) Win tickets here , and then read this interview by Chris Ziegler. steven fiche The Flamin Groovies should be right there with the Stooges, the MC5, the Modern Lovers and Big Star when it comes to bands who'd help determine the future of American rock 'n' roll—they could do it all, from cute to crushing, and beneath every Groovies classic ("Slow Death," "Shake Some Action") are ... even more classics ("Teenage Head," "Headin' For The Texas Border," "Love Have Mercy," "Golden Clouds" ...) and a ton of stories about drugs and freaks, including Ted Kennedy, Ike Turner, Jimi Hendrix and a giant mongoose. Co-founder and [...]

In 1971, The Rolling Stones hit the UK Charts with three great Stonesy hits "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses" and a re-issue of "Street Fighting Man". The album Sticky Fingers featured more great riffs in "Bitch" and the epic "Can't You Hear Me Knocking". And yet, it could be argued, the tune with the greatest Stonesy feel of 1971 didn't come from The Rolling Stones at all. Rock critic Greg Shaw recalls the sessions for The third Flamin' Groovies album Teenage Head as a non stop party. Not one of the San Francisco-based Groovies ever truly mastered [...]
