We Only Love What We Hate...Or Something With the joie de vivre attitude of a band that says, "Actually we all want solo careers like Albert Hammond and preferably model girlfriends too" Vampire Weekend spends its days waiting for the non-stop groupie sex that will come any day now. To start at the beginning, we went down to the East Side Ampitheatre, not before going to the bottom of every bridge in the city to see if the East Side Ampitheatre was there. I am usually so intense with directions I never get lost, [...]
Each weekday, My Morning Download introduces you to some of the coolest new music on the web. We clear through the noise so you don't have to. Meet Flight Of The Conchords Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are Flight Of The Conchords, New Zealand's self-proclaimed fourth most popular folk comedy duo. The Opinions Below Are Not Necessarily Endorsed By This Recording by Tess Lynch Some conversations you have had more than once in your life include: 1. What character from Sex and the City / Entourage you are most like, and which of your friends is most like Miranda/Turtle, and how you feel sorry for them. (Senior Ed. Lambert Notes: I take offense here, because I am clearly the Miranda. However taking offense and blogging about [...]
This week showcases a solid amount of releases with Okkervil River's Stage Names being the high-profile album out of this bunch. I've mentioned here many times that i've never been much of a fan, but i'm willing to give this one a chance. A few other releases have been mentioned here on the blog recently and I can definitely recommend. Those being Art in Manila's Set the Woods on Fire , The Brunette's Structure and Cosmetics and the Benzos' Branches (which I [...]

I'm on vacation this week, and since I all my formative listening is centered around my work day (commute, background at work, etc.) I'm a bit behind again. But there are two releases this week that deserve call-out regardless of how much ear time I've been able to give 'em. Okkervil River's latest as well as the Sub Pop debut (EP) from the HBO stars Flight of the Conchords . Playlist: New Releases 08.07.07 ------------------------------ ---------------- Album: Okkervil River [...]
I was turned on to these guys a while ago, but I live in the underground so I hope by now you're all savvy with these guys. They began their career like most comedians, doing the stand-up routines, (the comedy hard-knocks), then found themselves with a BBC Radio gig, and eventually wound up with an HBO special. The HBO show is really a damn funny one in all regards, and I recommend you look it up. What it amounts to is two guys who have no idea what love means, spending all their days being [...]
Sub Pop , the new kings of indie comedy, are releasing The Distant Future EP today by Flight Of The Conchords! If you don't know about FotC, these guys are a comedic digi-folk duo from New Zealand. After gaining some momentum in the UK, they're starting to infiltrate America! Recently, they've been quite visible on their HBO show . These guys won me over with their dry humor and "Cop Rock" influenced musical outbursts... Check out a clip from the show, and a taste of their songwriting below. Pick up [...]

2 things that I obsessed about this weekend is...1..HBO`s new comedy series " Flight Of The Conchords "...is LOLBY (laugh out loud by yourself ) funny!!...I love the little songs they have, and stupid me didn`t even know they were a read band until I Wiki`d it after the pilot... the other thing I was obsessed with is the new Fiery Furnaces album Widow City ....which totally blows their last album " [...]

I was in a bookstore near my parents' house looking for something to occupy me on my Amtrak ride home to New York City a few months ago, and I happened across a hardbacked copy of this book: The Marquis de Sade , of course, basically brought pornography to art in the form of literature, and lived one of the more bizarre lives in human history. Du Plessix Gray achieved recent success with a book on her parents, who were Russian emigres. Them is a fascinating [...]
Courtesy of HBO Peep the MySpace and watch these guys in action if you weren't planning on going to this. Wish I could be there, but I guess I'll just have to watch them on TV. Harsh Beginnings by Molly Lambert "Shia is within everyone's reach," says Spielberg. "He's every mother's son, every father's spitting image, every young kid's best pal and every girl's possible dream." Shia and his longtime girlfriend. They broke up because he was getting so much work. These pictures with the numbers on them are from his MySpace or something. Maybe from hers. I got them from here , which is the only gossip site worth reading. [...]
This weekend marks the invasion of the kiwis, as both the box office and the boob tube welcome quirky New Zealand products. First, the film Eagle Vs. Shark hits theaters Friday (in limited run,) closely followed by the HBO television premiere of Flight of the Conchords . To be more accurate, though, it's truly a Wellington invasion, as this NZ town is the home to the creators and stars of both. Add to that the band The Phoenix Foundation , who wrote the music for Eagle Vs. [...]
It was sort of weird this year with Bonnaroo. Most of my friends went last year and caught Radiohead (sigh) while I was in Seattle doing the Sub Pop thing, so I couldn't make it last year and swore I'd make it this year. Then, the day they released the artist list for this summer's festival, almost all my friends that I would have gone with looked at the list and gave a collective "eh, I don't know if it'd be worth all the trouble for these bands". Oddly enough I kind of agree. I'll probably get all kinds of crap for [...]
Time for a new contest, hooray! HBO's got a new show called Flight of the Conchords which chronicles a New Zealand band that moves to NYC. The duo consists of Bret McKenzie (The Black Seeds, Figwit) and Jemaine Clement (The Humuorbeasts) and the act centers around a combination of acoustic folk humor. Anyhow, up for (FREE) grabs are: 1 Robot Stress Reliever 1 DVD of the first episode 1 Poster 1 T-shirt 1 Postcard [...]
Hello strangers! Sorry I haven't been around lately. When I come back from SxSW next week hopefully I will have tons of good music to share with you. Until then, here's a rather lazy but still (I think) entertaining post for you full of David Bowie covers. Flight of the Conchords - Bowie (not actually a cover, just an amusing song/parody) Of Montreal - Hang Onto Yourself Harvey Danger - Oh! You Pretty Things The Langley Schools [...]

I first posted a little bit on Flight of the Conchords about a year ago, but the progress they have made since then is impressive - they even got their own show on HBO. Wow! Not only that, but one of them had a minor role in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, as Figwit , as well as once being in this band . Impressive stuff. Even though they're among the funniest people ever to play guitar, they never get lazy, and all their songs are genuinely well written as well as lung-bruisingly funny. They [...]
I don't have many protest songs on my computer, but here are two very different ones. Firstly, one by Dire Straits. Brothers in Arms was a hugely successful album, selling about 25 million copies, and while some of its songs have faded into obscurity ( The Man's Too Strong , anyone?), the title track is regularly used as background music for television. If you think you recognise it but don't know where from, wikipedia has a list of programmes which have used it. Even though it's over twenty years old, its anti-war message still [...]
