Tweet vaso link There has to be more of Flights' Anywhere But Where I Am than what they have on their Bandcamp page. There are only two songs available there - "Taller" and "Pillars" - but the story that those two start to tell can't possibly be finished in the ten minutes it takes to listen to them, because once I get to the end, I start them right over. It's like watching the first twenty minutes of a [...]

New joint from Texas trio 'The Lower Class'. They came out with a real interesting release a few months back, Flight Of Ideas , but with this one they switch up their style a lil bit. It's very nice too, a chill, mellow 90s summer vibe. With a view to an LP to be released this summer. The Lower Class: Facebook • Twitter • Soundcloud ~lork Tags: chill , [...]

Laced with piano, steeped in landscapes & sugar spun with Eric Hillman & Brian Holl's perfectly complementing vocals, Anywhere But Where I Am , the debut album from the group entitled Flights is the type of music that is fits a rainy day. But it isn't completely melancholy, it just has the same soothing qualities of a deliciously grey sky and the soft pattering of rain on the window. This record is landscapes of acoustic longing and hopeful sighs, the title suggests a desire to fly from where you are, as does the [...]

Nashville-via-Wisconsin duo Flights have already achieved more this year than even they expected. In it's own quiet way, their debut album, Anywhere But Where I Am , has taken on a life of it's own; partly through it's sheer brilliance and partly because of some choice words from Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz. In our review of the record last month we described the duo's music as " melding gentle and wistful folk with occassional electronic flourishes " - but that doesn't even begin to cover [...]

Quirky French ElectroPop duo The Penelopes release their new single at the beginning of next month. ‘Sally In The Galaxy’ is an uplifting, catchy track with a package that comes loaded with ace reMixes. Producers of the original version, The Flight, who apparently have zero web-presence, drop their ‘Galactic’ reMix and it’s a fittingly title slab of Cosmic Disco. Weighing in heavy with their vocoders and sweet soaring synths The Flight, who still apparently have zero web-presence, strip the gangly Indie side of the track out, layer on their own Sci-Fi funk and what remains is [...]

Making the monthly mixes usually results in having a bunch of good songs orphaned. In the past, I've had enough leftover material to make half editions of the Blogophilia mixes. This usually leads to confusion and questions about why have a half mix at all. I am not a fan of confusion, nor do I like to explain myself. So I've decided that there will be no more "half mixes" posted on the blog. Instead, we'll have a Biscuits & Gravy series, which reflects a surplus of good music that never made it to the monthly mix. I am a [...]
True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today’s age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]

Flights are Eric Hillman and Brian Holl, a Wisconsin duo now based in Nashville. Often in the over-hyped world of indie rock it's easy to overlook indie-folk gems like the band's new EP , however the songs on the band's Anywhere But Where I Am EP are too beautiful to bypass. Indie duo Brian Holl and Eric Hillman, known musically as Flights , have combined their wits to craft a debut album that soars, sings, and practically embodies the feeling of flying. The album, relevantly titled Anywhere But Where I Am , is a mix of influences that range from Radiohead to Bon Iver and combine the best traits of both. The guitars are some of the cleanest and most thoughtful parts that I've heard in a while, taking precedent without stealing the show entirely. The pianos are a nice touch too and [...]
Over the last two days, rare footage of both the Hindenburg and Challenger disasters have sprung up online. I had it in my head to post both, but since I'm a bit late to the part of each, I figured it would be best to group them together. The British Pathe archive shows the Hindenburg flying around and then after about two-and-a-half minutes cuts to the zeppelin in flames as it hits the ground. [via devour ] A rare amateur video of the Challenger shuttle disaster has recently surfaced in Hicksville, [...]

Sofia Talvik live at The Bama Theatre At first it seemed like a real challenge to book gigs in Alabama and Mississippi, and some people actually told us we would probably be better off skipping them altogether. Well, let me tell you I'm pretty happy we ignored that advice. If I haven't played the best venues there is in Alabama, I think my head is going to explode because the places I've played here have been some of the best gigs on my tour so far. In beautiful Birmingham I was invited to play Moonlight on [...]

Even in an age in which Spotify is (albeit justifiably) chastised for paying out pittances and peanuts to starry-eyed, if holey-jeaned artists it seems all but entirely illogical that a record of such startling beauty as Anywhere But Where I Am may be proffered by its conjurers free of charge. Said conjurers are Flights , or Eric Hillman and Brian Holl. Although the duo are now shacked up in Nashville, they hail initially from Wisconsin which, to the ignorant Brit at least sends surging thoughts recurring to Justin Vernon. Here [...]
