The first three tracks on Floating Action's debut (it's more of a pseudo-debut, but we'll get to that bit later) lay out, to a large degree, what the album is about, aesthetically, sonically and thematically. The first song, "50 Lashes," is a shuffling, vaguely twangy ode to emotional flagellation. It's dripping with homespun, warm touches, despite the fairly bleak subject matter; there's a sweet, recurring guitar jangle, brushed drums, ethereal and angelic "ooh"s in the background and, in general, a feeling that the song was recorded in a room with hardwood floors by eight or so musicians all locked into [...]
Floating Action is the new creative outlet for multi-instrumentalist Seth Kauffman who, after two solo releases, has teamed up with an ensemble...despite having written, performed, produced and recorded the material by himself in Dr. Dog's studio. Sam "Floating Action" Kauffman North Carolina native Seth Kauffman, now performing under the 'Floating Action' moniker, is gearing up for the April 21st release of his new album via Park The Van . I had to listen to "Absolute Sway" several times to fully understand Kauffman's talent. There are elements of 60's hippie-rock, Motown R&B and Bossa Nova on the single. London's The Hours will be making their first public performance at SXSW. Word has it that they're towing two drummers with them for the performance.
