I must hang my head in shame a little when I admit that I have just begun to listen to Florence + the Machine's Lungs. The buzz has been plentiful for the group's debut album, buzz which has already included a 2009 Mercury Prize nomination. Young frontwoman Florence Welch has a formidable presence. She has the elegant musicality of Kate Bush, the hep-cool of Karen O, and the sensuality of

One of the premiere female voices to emerge in 2009 has to be, without a doubt, Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine. She has been making music before 2009, sure, but it wasn't until this year's brilliant Lungs that she really started getting the props she deserves. About two minutes ago I had one of those moments where I looked at her Wikipedia page, saw that she is younger than me, and wept openly about my lack of musical talent. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but maybe it's not. [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , UK Florence and the Machine has been added to the ever-expanding line-up of T4's Stars of 2009 event scheduled to take place at London's legendary Earls Court Arena on Nov. 29. The scaffold-climbing singer and her Mercury Prize-nominated outfit will join a stellar bill that has already confirmed appearances from electro poppet La Roux and the arena-filling Kasabian .

"You were there when Jimi played the flaming guitar?" ... "You saw MJ at Motown 25?"... "You saw Patrick Wolf and Florence at the Palladium?". The last one may not yet warrant inclusion in the upper echelons of music history, but Patrick Wolf will eventually be remembered as one of our generation's true talents. Friday night's homecoming concert at the London Palladium was simply outstanding. Wolf's talent has always been prodigious, but the auditorium had an unmistakable air of "happening" - it was pitched as an unmissable, one-off performance, and lived up to expectations. Patrick Wolf [...]
This past Saturday it was raining like the Dickens here in the City of New York, and finding myself confined to the Train Station I set out to find some songs to complement the mood. Armed with only my laptop and a little helping of melancholy I decided it was ...

Pavla Kopecna All throughout Theoretical Girl's set at SxSW back in March , I was wracking my brain trying to figure out who Amy Turnnidge, she who is the central abstract idea of the band, reminded me of. This didn't keep me from enjoying her set, but it was a relief and head slap when I finally put it together a week or two later - the name I'd been trying to dig out of my memory banks was Sarah Blackwood. Not the icy electro-pop queen she now is with Client , [...]

There are a lot of great artists and albums that I haven't posted anything about yet. I guess that's why I wasn't really surprised when I realized that I hadn't posted anything about Lungs by Florence and the Machine , one of the best albums of 2009. Lungs was originally released in early July. That's when a friend handed me the album and told me how amazing it was. For the first couple of weeks, I didn't really agree with him but then I started hearing what he was talking about. [...]
