Unusual Canadian quartet mixes progrock, classical and more One spin of this Montreal band's second full-length made me belatedly realize that my infatuation with Stereolab and Portishead traces a straight line back to an earlier infatuation with Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North, and many other '70s prog-rock giants. It's not that these bands share the same exact melodic, rhythmic or instrumental sensibilities, but they each temper rock elements with something progressive, such as jazz, classical, and world music. Flotilla augments their keyboards, electronics, bass, and drums, with ethereal, delicate touches of fingertip plucked [...]

It has been a while since my last "Seven Songs" post . They're always pretty fun though, check out my new seven songs for this round below. List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions along with your 7 songs… [...]

Photography by buhoazul Okay. I'm not one to grab albums via promo emails. I always feel a little dirty when I do. I prefer to get my music the old fashioned way, internet pirating. ARRR! But this one had three little words in the email I just couldn't... COULDN'T ingore. No, no, no, not "hot naked chicks", but the following: Montreal! Pop!! Prog!!! [...]

Raise your hand if you like thought experiments. Cool, me too. Since you are still reading, I'll take that as consent and keep going with this hook. Imagine we live in a more just and progressive society where anyone can marry anyone else, and Annie Clark and Laetitia Sadier have decided to come together in wedded bliss. Imagine they go on to raise a child together, a lovely daughter, and while she takes Clark's voice, she eschews the American mommy's penchant for the hyper-theatrical and pretension for the French mommy's subtle cool and back-beat proclivities. That [...]

Long before the Beatles kicked off "She Loves You" with a now-famous count, Lawrence Welk was doing it with "a-one and a-two." A lot of musicians do a count at the beginning of a song, but that isn't necessarily the part of a song you recall. That made finding a contribution for this week's Contrast Podcast #184 theme a bit tricky, and it's bound to lead to a fine mix. The songs I considered were all so beautiful that choosing one was difficult, so I am posting them all here. My choice for [...]

I'm beginning to think Canadians are putting something extra special in their girls' food. They must be! I mean, so much female vocal talent coming from the country at once, it's just not fair! We've already featured The O'Darling , my last post was about Metric , and Stars, as you should know, are one of my favorite bands (hellloooo Amy Millan's vocals.) Next in line comes Montreal's Flotilla, led by the terrific Veronica Charnley, with a backing band of Geof Holbrook (bass, keyboards, electronics, backing vocals,) Eveline Grégoire-Rousseau (harp!) and Benoit Monière (drums.) Mixing experimental [...]

Lately it seems that being a hot "indie" band from Montreal is as much of a curse as it is a blessing. Obviously the scene has chops – 17 of the 40 Polaris long-listers call the area home – but the shine of being the next big thing from Montreal is now tossed out with the slightest hint of distaste. It's kind of like being the next thing from Brooklyn. People acknowledge both as creative petri dishes and you can't discredit the impact both have on shaping new music, but unlike a few years ago, that praise is handed [...]
I rounded off Day 2 at NXNE with, surprise, more shows. I caught a bunch of acts including:FlotillaThe Montreal band played a tremendous set at Rancho Relaxo. They sounded vibrant and dynamic. I would say they were better live than they were on their very solid new album.Rah Rah were loading their gear in as I left. I hope they don't think I'm stalking them.Built By SnowI've been waiting a

One Hundred Words for Water is the second full length album from Montreal-based indie band Flotilla. Hailing from Montreal, playing ornate indie rock, and featuring a mixed gender Anglo/Franco line-up, it seems inevitable that Flotilla would garner comparisons to Arcade Fire. However, I would warn against making that sweeping comparison. While both bands do play elaborately arranged music,
Montreal band Flotilla 's second full-length album, One Hundred Words for Water , is full of musical surprises of the best kind. Flotilla is hard to pin down, genre wise. Some tracks are solidly indie art-rock, but there's a jazzy flavour underlying the whole album. Add a bit of cabaret, folk-rock elements, a dash of electronica, nonstandard time signatures, and occasional mid-song mood changes, and you've got Flotilla. Veronica Charnley's vocals are the standout element, but the inclusion of harp lines throughout—a classical harpist is one of the band's four regular members—also differentiate this band from others. Sonic [...]
Montreal-based Anglo/Franco indie group Flotilla are poised to release their second full length album. In anticipation of the arrival of One Hundred Words for Water, the quartet will be holding a CD release party on June 4th at Tranzac in Toronto. Metal Kites and White Whale will be joining them for what should be a solid show.Flotilla will also be appearing at NXNE with a show at Rancho Relaxo
