Puerto Rico Flowers' "7 LP" chronicles a psychological journey of unforgotten grudges and fevered disdain. This labor of love, or perhaps of angst, was constructed by musician and singer John Sharkey III. Sharkey was formerly a member of Clockcleaner, a punky band that had the gumption to decry Nirvana and the confidence to forge a path for the seemingly un-marketable "skull music," the purposeful, calculated acoustic equivalent of being hit over the head with a hammer. His solo efforts run the gamut of emotions, and embrace several different strands of rock and electronic beats. Sometimes the [...]

One of the constants in my life since I first moved to Northern California over thirty years ago has been the local music scene. Ever since the blues moved west in the 1940's the area between Monterey and Eureka,- the Bay, Coast, Redwoods, Peninsula and Delta - have been magnets for musicians and artists. Well above the average per capita number of musicians and artists live here than live in most other major metropolitan areas. Northern California has its own cadence and its own style. The Bay Area was overrun with [...]

Leather , a Philly-based hardcore act with a grimy and evocative sound that's been whispered about for months now, will be taking the Barbary stage tonight. After releasing a cassette demo and a seven-inch that has since sold out, the four-piece are on their way to turning themselves into underground living legends within a short period of time. They recently release their 7" Sterile via Jade Tree (which you can purchase HERE ). Leather will be opening the release party for Puerto Rico Flowers , the new project from infamous former Clockcleaner frontman John [...]

"I spent about eight years living in this apartment on Wilton Place in Hollywood...it had everything I needed: a nice tube amp with a few shelves of LP's, plenty of musical instruments, and a couple good microphones... My mom gave me our upright piano that now doubled as a desk to write on. When I was a little kid, Harry Nilsson made up a song for me on that same piano. I had a feeling that someday I'd sing songs, too. " — John Gold Harry Nilsson? Yes, Los Angeles native John Gold [...]

Los Angeles singer-songwriter John Gold is proud to announce the release of his third proper album "A Flower In Your Head" on June 14 via Vagrant Records. From start to finish, "A Flower In Your Head" offers something for everyone, roping in 60's and 70's Southern California rock enthusiasts with tracks like 'Skyscraper' and 'Baby, it's Your Life' with pop hooks, piano leads and tambourine shakes that make it nearly impossible to contain your sing-along instincts on those long summer drives. Balkans have topped my new favorite artists list ever since we first covered them back when Newdust was a wee lad, and now they are starting to get the recognition they deserve (Spin Magazine named them one of the 5 Best New Artists for June, just to name one example). Check out their latest [...]

Flowers - For Real I hope one day to have dinner with this bass player.
A new video from Balkans new, self-titled album, which it out now on Double Phantom . I reviewed it very positively over here . Simple, but weird.

I've been hearing about singer/songwriter Amos Lee for some time now. I've listened to him before, but for one reason or another, his music just never struck the right note with me. Then, I watched the video for his latest single, " Flower " and something just started jiving. I don't know if it's the song itself, the way Lee sings it or the innovative video - but something happened and I'm starting to feel like a big idiot. Lee's music is a mix [...]
The morning is beautiful with a bright sun and a blue sky, but that pesky cool breeze is still with us and will bring the temperature down to the high 402s tonight. Standing outside in the sun is warm and cozy, but the shade is a might chilly. When I went to get dog food yesterday, I brought my list of flowers so I could buy a couple more and be finished buying for the season. Well, that was a mistake. I bought one or two of each flower on the list. My trunk was filled and some [...]

Today is beautifully sunny and warm. When I went on the deck earlier this morning, I could smell the sweetness in the air. It smelled of flowers and herbs and a touch of the ocean. A slight breeze rustled the leaves of the trees in the backyard. I have a few flowers wanting pots so I'll be outside taking in the sun and potting some plants for the deck. The fountain needs some tubing so I'll visit the hardware store late in the afternoon so as not to waste a minute of the sun. It has a tendency to disappear. [...]

Dizzy Dearest // All These Flowers I received this in an email. With only a link to click I dove into this EP literally knowing nothing about this band Dizzy Dearest . Given the band's name and the album artwork, I was convinced that it was going to be cutesy electro-pop. Thankfully I was wrong. While there are elements of electronic music here, there is a ton more to discover. The influence of shoegaze is apparent with much of the EP dripping reverb, but depending on where you [...]
